Summary: Encounters between flowers and invertebrates play a crucial role in tropical forest ecosystems. This study aims to provide a comprehensive database of flower-invertebrate interactions in the Atlantic Forest. The dataset includes over 18,000 interaction records forming 482 networks, involving 641 plant genera and 581 invertebrate genera. The study highlights the knowledge gap in canopy flower-invertebrate interactions and the need for further research in remote forested areas.

Revealing the Permanent and Transient Plant Understory in Gallery Forests in the Cerrado of Central Brazil

Summary: The understories of tropical forests can be classified into permanent and transient understory, with the latter being more diverse. This study examined the composition, structure, diversity, and the relative contribution of growth forms in the permanent and transient understories of gallery forests in the Brazilian Cerrado. Tree seedlings were the most common growth form, followed by shrubs and lianas. This study provides valuable information for the ecological restoration and conservation of gallery forests in the Cerrado.

Revisiting the bipolarity of Roaldia revoluta (Mitt.) PEAS Camara & Carv.-Silva (Bryophyta, Pylaisiaceae)

Summary: The occurrence of species in both polar regions is a common phenomenon in the Antarctic flora. This study focuses on the bipolar bryophyte Roaldia revoluta and investigates its bipolarity and intraspecific variation through molecular and morphological analysis. The results show that R. revoluta has a consistent distribution pattern and no significant morphological differences among populations from both polar regions. The classification of Roaldia dolomitica as a separate species from R. revoluta is not strongly supported by the data.

Summary: The Neotropical region is home to the most diverse flora, and Piper is the most diverse genus in the region with 1,908 accepted species. A knowledge synthesis of Piper diversity, distribution and conservation in the region is crucial for resource allocation and conservation priorities. A systematic examination of available scientific evidence revealed a scarcity of research on Neotropical Piper species diversity, distribution, and conservation, presenting opportunities for new projects.

Summary: Trichomes are functional traits that protect plants and provide useful characters for species characterization. In this study, we focused on trichomes in the megadiverse genus Croton, and proposed a new classification based on well-defined parameters, which clarifies existing redundancies and is consistent with anatomical evidence. This contribution will improve communication among taxonomists and promote meaningful morphological comparability in systematic studies.

Pollen morphology of heterostylous species in Piriqueta (Passifloraceae s.l.)

Diversity of pollen grains transported from South America to the Antarctic Peninsula through atmospheric dispersal

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of using pollen grains as biomarkers of atmospheric transport between South America and Antarctica. Palynological analysis of snow samples collected in 2005 revealed the presence of spores and pollen grains from South America. The use of the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory model showed that the Andes serve as a heat source for pollen transport, confirming the feasibility of using pollen grains as biomarkers.

These findings have significant implications for the systematic and ecological studies of Malpighiaceae.

Soil Fungal Diversity and Ecology Assessed Using DNA Metabarcoding along a Deglaciated Chronosequence at Clearwater Mesa, James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula

Summary: In this study, the fungal organisms present in soils at James Ross Island, north-east Antarctic Peninsula, were characterized using DNA metabarcoding. The detected taxa included widely-distributed phyla such as Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Mortierellomycota, as well as uncommon phyla such as Chytridiomycota, Rozellomycota, Monoblepharomycota, Zoopagomycota, and Basidiobolomycota. Unknown fungi and taxa identified at different taxonomic levels dominated the assemblages. The fungal sequence assemblages exhibited high diversity and richness, and moderate dominance, with the presence of saprophytic, pathogenic, and symbiotic fungi.

Despite the similarities, differences were observed in pollen size, polar area, sexine ornamentation, and endoaperture characteristics. Palynological analysis provided new information for species distinction within Calea sect. Meyeria.

The systematic value of pollen morphology in Homalolepis and other six Neotropical genera of Simaroubaceae
