Trichopria drosophilae is a cosmopolitan pupal parasitoid that attacks many species of Drosophilidae, including the invasive Drosophila suzukii. This study reports on the life-history traits and host preferences of a Californian population of T. drosophilae and compares its life-time fecundity with a South Korean population of T. drosophilae. Female parasitoids emerge with a high mature egg-load (47.6 +/- 2.3 eggs per female). The number of mature eggs of female T. drosophilae was affected by the female age and body size but not by the interaction between these two factors. The parasitoid did not show preference among differently aged (1-4 days old) D. suzukii pupae and host age did not affect the parasitoid's fitness, except that offspring developmental time slightly increased with host age. In a choice test, more offspring successfully developed from the larger D. suzukii than the smaller D. melanogaster, and adult females reared from D. suzukii were larger than those that were reared from D. melanogaster, apparently at no cost in parasitoid fitness. T. drosophilae females from the Californian and the South Korean populations survived 27.5 and 20.2 days, produced a total of 63.8 and 52.0 offspring, and had an intrinsic rate of increase of 0.124 and 0.113, respectively, when provided with adult food and D. suzukii pupae as host material.

Summary: When an alien species invades a new habitat, biological control agents that are co-evolved with the exotic pest may be the best solution. In Italy, Trissolcus japonicus and Trissolcus mitsukurii are considered as biocontrol agents against Halyomorpha halys. The study found that these two parasitoids exhibit different preferences for cues between two stinkbugs.

Summary: This study examined the temporal patterns of colorectal cancer burden and its risk factors globally, regionally, and nationally over the past three decades. The findings showed a continuous increase in incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer globally, with rising rates in younger adults and a significant burden in Asian and African countries. Diet, smoking, and alcohol use were identified as major contributors to colorectal cancer burden.

Summary: Xylosandrus compactus is an invasive ambrosia beetle causing severe damage to host plants. The cryptic habits and wide host range of this beetle have facilitated its rapid spreading worldwide. Effective control strategies for this beetle are still lacking, and this study examined the potential of commercially available microbial agents as alternative management tools. The results showed that the tested microbials can suppress the growth of the beetle mutualist and affect the development of its progeny.

The geographic scope of host use by the ladybeetle parasitoid Dinocampus coccinellae

Summary: This study examined the variation in parasitism of D. coccinellae on H. axyridis populations in different regions and hosts, and inferred its putative origin. The results showed that parasitism rates of D. coccinellae on invasive H. axyridis and native hosts were remarkably similar, not supporting the enemy release hypothesis. However, parasitism rates of H. axyridis were much lower in its native range, indicating a potential contribution to the control of invasive populations. Genetic relationships analysis revealed widespread haplotypes of D. coccinellae with no host-associated genetic structure.

Role of plant essential oil nanoemulsions on host colonization by the invasive ambrosia beetle Xylosandrus compactus

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of five plant essential oil nanoemulsions on the behavior and reproduction of the invasive ambrosia beetle Xylosandrus compactus. The results showed that nanoemulsions based on Rosmarinus officinalis cv. verbenone and Carlina acaulis had significant repellent effects on the beetle, while the effect of R. officinalis oil decreased at lower concentrations. However, the EO treatments had no effect on the number of offspring produced by the beetles. Overall, the findings suggest that R. officinalis and C. acaulis essential oils can be used as repellents for X. compactus in sustainable integrated pest management strategies.

Volatiles of fungal cultivars act as cues for host-selection in the fungus-farming ambrosia beetle Xylosandrus germanus

Summary: Many wood-boring insects, such as bark beetles and ambrosia beetles, use aggregation pheromones during colonization of host trees. This study focused on the exotic ambrosia beetle Xylosandrus germanus and discovered that it is attracted to its primary nutritional mutualist Ambrosiella grosmanniae and other fungal isolates. It was also found that X. germanus preferentially selects branch sections that are pre-colonized by conspecifics or pre-inoculated with A. grosmanniae. Microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) were identified as potential aggregation pheromones for X. germanus. This research provides the first evidence of fungal volatiles as attractive cues during host selection by X. germanus.

Summary: This study investigated the toxicity of nine insecticides on Drosophila suzukii larvae and their sublethal effects on the pupal parasitoid Trichopria drosophilae. The results showed that chlorpyriphos and azadirachtin had the lowest and highest LC10 values, respectively. Several insecticides affected the development time and reproductive success of D. suzukii and T. drosophilae.

Summary: We investigated the temporal variations in disease burden of PM2.5 and ozone in Italy using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. The study found that while the burden of PM2.5 significantly decreased in Italy, the burden of ozone increased, even in the context of population aging.

Toxicity of Cinnamomum spp. essential oil to Tuta absoluta and to predatory mirid

Summary: This study evaluated the lethal and sublethal effects of Cinnamomum essential oils on Tuta absoluta and found that the essential oils significantly decreased the duration of the pest's life cycle stages and fecundity, as well as showed high toxicity to the larvae. However, the essential oils also caused significant mortality to the predatory insect Macrolophus basicornis, indicating potential incompatibilities with other integrated pest management tools.
