Septoria leaf blotch (SLB) is considered one of the most devastating diseases affecting global wheat production. Biostimulant application is among the modern approaches in plant protection to overcome the impact of SLB's fungicide resistance. In this manner, the effect of coating seeds with thyme essential oil or Paraburkholderia phytofirmans PsJN strain on SLB severity and yield components (spikes/m(2), straw yield (SY), grain yield (GY) and thousand kernel weight (TKW)) were assessed under field conditions for 3 years. The effect on physiological traits and nitrogen and carbon isotope composition (delta N-15(grain), delta C-13(grain)) and nitrogen and carbon content (N-grain, C-grain) of grains was assessed in one year of study. The increasing SLB severity decreased all yield components, increased delta N-15(grain) and C-grain content and slightly decreased delta C-13(grain) as the resulting effect of Zymoseptoria tritici inducing stomatal opening and leaf necrosis. Across the years, both treatments alleviated the SLB adverse impact by reducing SLB severity, increasing spikes/m(2), SY, GY and TKW. Both treatments ameliorated grain quality by increasing C-grain content and decreasing delta C-13(grain) and delta N-15(grain). The difference between the performance of thyme oil or PsJN strain in terms of intensity and stability is discussed and considered to be linked to the different triggered systemic resistance and the associated amount of costs deriving from resource allocation towards defense processes.

Exploring the Potential of Meyerozyma guilliermondii on Physiological Performances and Defense Response against Fusarium Crown Rot on Durum Wheat

Zayneb Kthiri, Maissa Ben Jabeur, Fadia Chairi, Camilo Lopez-Cristoffanini, Marta Lopez-Carbonell, Maria Dolores Serret, Jose Luis Araus, Chahine Karmous, Walid Hamada

Summary: Coating seeds with Meyerozyma guilliermondii has shown to promote plant growth and increase photosynthesis traits, while reducing disease incidence and severity caused by Fusarium culmorum. This bio-control agent also helps in mitigating the negative impact of the disease on photosynthesis and plant growth.

Summary: The study found that seed coating with Trichoderma harzianum, Meyerozyma guilliermondii, and their combination can significantly reduce Fusarium head blight severity, increase grain yield, and impact the physiological parameters and carbon-nitrogen metabolism of durum wheat. In particular, the combination treatment outperformed others in terms of grain yield and test weight.

Summary: The use of seed coating with thyme essential oil and Paraburkholderia phytofirmans bacteria can improve crop tolerance and seedling growth in durum wheat. The treatment resulted in earlier activation of seeds, increased acidification and amylolytic activity, enhanced peroxidase activity and phenolic content, and promoted shoot and root growth.

Summary: This study investigated the use of natural biostimulants to improve the micropropagation and regeneration rate of strawberry plants. Thyme essential oil and a mix of microalgae consortia were found to positively affect root development and growth in vitro. The treated plants also showed increased chlorophyll content and induced antioxidant activity.
