Summary: This study utilized evolutionary and metabolic engineering to improve an Escherichia coli strain for more efficient GABA production from glycerol. Through mutation analysis and metabolic pathway regulation, the GABA yield and specific productivity of the glycerol-adapted strain were significantly increased compared to the wild-type.

Summary: Alcohol consumption is associated with health harms and governments worldwide are trying to reduce them. One approach is to reduce alcohol consumption, leading to the development of non-alcoholic drinks. However, non-alcoholic drinks do not provide the social interaction that alcohol does. Therefore, the alternative approach is to develop functional drinks that mimic the positive effects of alcohol without the harms.

Summary: This study identified the effect of GABAR agonists on K-2P channel expression and activity in neuroblastic B35 cells. Muscimol, a GABA(A)R agonist, was found to significantly increase TREK-2 expression and activity, potentially reducing cellular excitability in GABAergic neurons through activating the TREK-2 channel.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) plays important metabolic and signaling roles in plant stress responses. It promotes plant growth and increases nitrogen assimilation and protein synthesis under nitrogen deficient conditions. GABA also up-regulates certain genes to increase nitrate uptake and alleviate nitrogen deficiency in plants.

Summary: Gene duplication and divergence play a significant role in the generation of morphological diversity and emergence of novel features in vertebrates. Although genome sequencing has improved our understanding of gene and regulatory element evolution, progress in studying protein function conservation and divergence has been slow. Some studies have explored the functional evolution of related proteins, but understanding of protein function variation within gene families remains limited.

Summary: By annotating the ABC superfamily across more than 150 arthropod species with good quality protein annotations, specific expansions of ABC transporter families suggesting evolutionary adaptation were highlighted. Functional redundancy was observed in the transporters, with the exception of the highly conserved gene Snu, likely due to its role in cuticular formation. This analysis can be used as a resource for further understanding the ABC superfamily in arthropods.

Summary: The study demonstrates that two lactic acid bacteria have significant effects on cholesterol and gamma-aminobutyric acid, and they exhibit good tolerance even under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. The co-culture of the two strains in milk fermentation shows more effectiveness in reducing cholesterol, increasing GABA content, and ACE inhibition.

Summary: The study shows that GABA production in guard cells of Arabidopsis reduces stomatal opening and transpirational water loss, thereby enhancing water use efficiency. This highlights a novel role for GABA metabolism in fine tuning plant physiology and offers new possibilities for enhancing plant stress resilience.

Summary: Based on enzyme evolution and high-throughput screening methods, this study obtained mutants with enhanced GABA productivity. Introduction of the central regulator GadE and enzymes from a biosynthesis pathway resulted in further improvement. In a 5L bioreactor, using crude L-glutamic acid as the substrate, GABA reached a concentration of 307.5 +/- 5.94 g/L with a productivity of 61.49 g/L/h. Therefore, the constructed biocatalyst combined with the whole-cell bioconversion method is an effective approach for industrial GABA production.

Summary: In this study, a molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor based on high-performance magnetically functionalized reduced graphene oxide (MRGO) was constructed for the sensitive detection of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the serum of depressed mice. It provides a basis for the objective diagnosis of depression in clinic.

Summary: The study found that mixed flours and sourdough have significant effects on the texture, chemical properties, sensory characteristics, GI, and antioxidant activity of bread. Compared to semolina, mixed flours bread had higher specific volume and FAA content. Mixed flours bread showed different profiles of volatile organic compounds and lower GI and higher antioxidant activity than semolina bread.

Summary: The research shows that cadmium can enter plants easily from the soil solution and cause harmful effects, even at low concentrations. The experiment conducted on lettuce (Lactuca sativa) demonstrates that the addition of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) can mitigate the toxicity of cadmium by promoting plant growth and enhancing antioxidant enzyme activity.
