MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of non-coding RNAs, containing about 22 nucleotides and having a pivotal function in various cellular processes. The oncogenic and tumor suppressor roles of miRNAs have been identified in cancers especially in gastric cancer, which is one of the most prevalent cancers. MiR-299-5p is located in the imprinted Dlk1-Dio3 region in chromosome 14q32. Aberrant expression of miR-299-5p was determined in solid and blood cancers. The current study was performed to assess the expression pattern of miR-299-5p in intestinal-type gastric adenocarcinoma and compare it with the normal adjacent counterparts. The expression level of miR-299-5p was investigated in forty fresh specimens which were obtained from gastric cancer patients during endoscopy. Moreover, the association of aberrant expression of miR-299-5p and clinicopathological features, as well as the susceptibility of miR-299-5p as a tumor marker, was determined. The result of qRT-PCR revealed the downregulation of miR-299-5p in intestinal-type gastric adenocarcinoma compared with adjacent tumor-free tissues (P < 0.001); this misregulation can be used as a tumor marker. Analysis of miR-299-5p misregulation did not reveal a significant correlation with clinical features. The result obtained from the present study revealed the significant downregulation of miR-299-5p in intestinal-type gastric adenocarcinoma which is consistent with previous studies showing miR-299-5p downregulation in other types of cancers. The data obtained from the current study suggest basic information which can be very helpful for future research in the field of diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer.

Suppression of lncRNA NORAD may affect cell migration and apoptosis in gastric cancer cells

Negin Raei, Reza Safaralizadeh, Mohammadali Hosseinpourfeizi, Saeid Latifi-Navid, Abbas Yazdanbod

Summary: This study found that NORAD is significantly overexpressed in gastric cancer tissues, and may promote tumor development by affecting cell migration, metastasis, apoptosis rate, and relevant protein levels. NORAD may serve as a potential diagnostic biomarker in gastric cancer.

Summary: This study developed an electrochemical immunosensor based on gold nanoparticle-modified graphene for the ultra-sensitive monitoring of Parkinson's disease-related protein. The combination of gold nanoparticles and graphene enhanced the electrochemical activity of the materials, improving sensitivity and lowering the detection limit. This diagnostic method has potential applications in early-stage diagnosis and high-throughput screening of Parkinson's disease.

Changes in the Expression of Long Non-Coding RNA SDMGC and Its Target Gene, TRIM16, in Patients with Gastric Cancer

Mina Seifi Inallou, Reza Safaralizadeh, Ali Rajabi, Mohammadali Hosseinpourfeizi, Mehdi Haghi

Summary: This study investigated the association of SDMGC and TRIM16 with GC susceptibility and clinicopathological characteristics of GC patients. The results showed an increase in the expression of SDMGC and a decline in the expression pattern of TRIM16 among the Iranian population. SDMGC was found to have a tumor-accelerative function, while TRIM16 played a pivotal tumor-suppressing role in GC patients.

The expression profile of HAR1A and HAR1B in the peripheral blood cells of multiple sclerosis patients

Sama Akbarzadeh, Samaneh Tayefeh-Gholami, Parisa Najari, Ali Rajabi, Tooraj Ghasemzadeh, Mohammadali Hosseinpour Feizi, Reza Safaralizadeh

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the expression levels of HAR1A and HAR1B lncRNAs in the blood samples of MS patients and investigate their relationship with disease activity. The results showed a significant decrease in HAR1A expression and a moderate increase in HAR1B expression in SPMS patients. The expression levels of HAR1A and HAR1B were positively correlated in MS patients. The study suggests that HAR1A can be introduced as a novel biomarker for MS diagnosis.

Alterations in the expression levels of long intergenic non-coding RNA APOC1P1-3 in cervical cancer tissue samples

Narges Dastmalchi, Sama Akbarzadeh, Farnaz Amini, Ali Rajabi, Reza Safaralizadeh

Summary: This study assessed the expression changes of APOC1P1-3 lncRNA in cancerous and adjacent non-tumorous tissues from cervical cancer patients. APOC1P1-3 expression was significantly increased in cancerous tissues and showed associations with lymph node involvement, tumor invasion depth, squamous type of cervical cancer, and age. APOC1P1-3 may serve as a potential biomarker for the diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer patients.

Summary: Metastatic cancer ctDNA has a high frequency of mutations in TP53, HER-2, KRAS, and EGFR genes, and studying ctDNA can help identify patients with pre-malignant tumors and determine prognosis and appropriate treatments. However, obstacles to ctDNA detection and analysis should be addressed and more clinical trials are needed to study the significance of ctDNA in commonly diagnosed malignancies.

Role of the ER-induced UPR pathway, apoptosis, and autophagy in colorectal cancer

Elmira Aboutalebi Vand Beilankouhi, Mir Amirhossein Sajadi, Iraj Alipourfard, Peyman Hassani, Mohammad Valilo, Reza Safaralizadeh

Summary: When misfolded or unfolded proteins accumulate in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) due to stress, the unfolded protein response (UPR) is activated. This process is disrupted in various diseases including diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancers. The UPR activates specific signaling pathways in the ER, nucleus, and cytoplasm to restore cellular homeostasis, either promoting cell survival or apoptosis. Disturbance in this balance can lead to cancer.
