This study sought to examine the relationship between dietary share of ultra-processed foods and metabolic syndrome among US adults. We studied 6, 385 participants from the cross-sectional National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009-2014, aged 20+ years, with blood tests under fasting conditions and at least one 24-hour dietary recall. Food items were classified according to the extent and purpose of industrial food processing. Ultra-processed foods (UPF) are formulations of many ingredients, mostly of exclusive industrial use, that result from a sequence of industrial processes (hence ultra-processed). Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) was defined according to the 2009 Joint Scientific Statement as meeting three or more of the following criteria: (1) elevated waist circumference (2) elevated fasting plasma glucose (3) elevated blood pressure (4) elevated triglycerides (5) reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C). Poisson regression models with robust variance adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, family income, education, physical activity and smoking showed significant linear association between the dietary contribution of UPF and the prevalence of MetS (a 10% increase in contribution was associated with a 4% prevalence increase) (prevalence ratio -PR- = 1.04; 95% CI 1.02, 1.07). A dietary UPF contribution of >71% (5th population quintile) was associated with 28% higher prevalence of MetS compared to a contribution below 40% (1st population quintile) (PR = 1.28; 95% CI 1.09, 1.50). The association was stronger in young adults (PR between upper and lower quintiles = 1.94; 95% CI 1.39, 2.72) and decreased with age. These findings add to the growing evidence that UPF consumption is associated with diet-related non-communicable diseases.

Trends in food consumption according to the degree of food processing among the UK population over 11 years

Mariana Madruga, Euridice Martinez Steele, Christian Reynolds, Renata Bertazzi Levy, Fernanda Rauber

Summary: Ultra-processed foods make up more than half of the total energy consumed by the UK population. From 2008 to 2019, there was an increase in the energy share of culinary ingredients and a reduction in processed foods. Additionally, changes in the consumption of certain food subgroups were observed.

Premature Deaths Attributable to the Consumption of Ultraprocessed Foods in Brazil

Eduardo A. F. Nilson, Gerson Ferrari, Maria Laura C. Louzada, Renata B. Levy, Carlos A. Monteiro, Leandro F. M. Rezende

Summary: Ultraprocessed foods are associated with an increased risk of noncommunicable diseases and premature death in Brazil. A study estimated that the consumption of these foods was responsible for approximately 57,000 premature deaths in adults aged 30-69 years in 2019. Reducing the intake of ultraprocessed foods could potentially prevent thousands of deaths.

Ultra-processed food consumption deteriorates the profile of micronutrients consumed by Portuguese adults and elderly: the UPPER project

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between micronutrient intake and the degree of food processing, as well as the association between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and micronutrient inadequacies in Portuguese adults and elderly individuals. The findings reveal that ultra-processed foods have lower content of vitamins and minerals compared to unprocessed or minimally processed foods. High energy contribution from ultra-processed foods is associated with lower density of vitamins and minerals. Public health actions promoting a reduction in the consumption of ultra-processed foods are important.

Summary: This study standardized the food processing classification system for the WWEIA and NHANES datasets using the Nova system, and conducted sensitivity analyses to examine potential misclassification. The results showed that the energy contribution of UPFs differed by approximately 6% between alternative approaches.

Ultra-processed foods consumption and diet quality among preschool children and women of reproductive age from Argentina

Maria Elisa Zapata, Gustavo Cediel, Ezequiel Arrieta, Alicia Rovirosa, Esteban Carmuega, Carlos A. Monteiro

Summary: The consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) was found to be associated with lower diet quality and higher intake of nutrients related to non-communicable diseases (NCD) among preschool children and women of reproductive age in Argentina. It is important to develop food policies that reduce UPF consumption and promote the intake of fresh and whole foods to improve dietary quality.

Summary: This paper describes the use of a web-based self-completed 24-hour recall tool called Nova24h to categorize food intake into Nova groups and compare its accuracy in estimating the relative contribution of these groups to a reference tool. The study found no significant differences between the Nova24h and the reference tool's estimates of dietary contributions from different food groups, and the tools showed good agreement in ranking participants based on their contributions. The researchers concluded that Nova24h is a suitable tool for estimating dietary energy contribution from Nova food groups in the studied population.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the role of adiposity in the associations between ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption and head and neck cancer (HNC) and oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC) in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort. The results showed that higher UPF consumption was associated with a greater risk of HNC and OAC. Adiposity mediated a small proportion of these associations. Further research is needed to explore other potential mechanisms.
