Aeromonas bacteria can cause an infection characterized by septicemia and is one of the most common pathogens in tropical fish. This disease is responsible for high morbidity and mortality rates, causing considerable losses in aquaculture. Thus, the understanding of its pathophysiology is crucial to develop control strategies of this bacterial infection in farmed fish. This study aimed to characterize early pathological aspects of acute sepsis in pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) experimentally infected with Aeromonas hydrophila. A total of 160 juvenile pacus were inoculated intraperitoneally with A. hydrophila (1.78 x 10(9) CFU/mL) and at 0 (control), 1, 3, 6, and 9 hours post-inoculation (hpi), animals were anesthetized and samples were collected for microbiological, light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyzes. The results showed the occurrence of hemodynamic alterations, such as hemorrhage and congestion, which were observed mainly after 6 and 9 hpi. It was possible to re-isolate Aeromonas at all sampling times except in control group. However, just after 9 hpi it was possible to find the bacteria in all fish and tissues. Light microscopy analyses revealed a degenerative process, necrosis and vascular damage mainly at 6 and 9 hpi. According to the ultrastructural examination, areas of cellular death were identified in all examined tissues, especially at 6 and 9 hpi. However, the most severe, related to necrosis, were observed after 6 and 9 hpi. The findings suggested that this bacterium spreads in the first hpi through the fish organs, mainly affecting spleen, liver and kidney, causing irreversible lesions at the molecular level.

Summary: Feeding accounts for a significant portion of production costs in fish farming, prompting the use of alternative raw materials. This study conducted analyses on red tilapia fed with biofloc meal, revealing it to be a sustainable alternative with satisfactory sensory and microbiological results.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of benzocaine and eugenol on anesthesia in tambaqui fish, as well as the use of different anticoagulants on hematological and biochemical parameters. Results showed that eugenol-induced anesthesia had better performance compared to benzocaine, with faster induction and recovery times and fewer alterations in blood parameters. Additionally, the use of EDTA was found to facilitate erythrocyte conservation and cause fewer blood alterations compared to other anticoagulants.

Summary: The use of probiotics during tambaqui breeding was proven to be safe, but adding multi-species probiotics to water or feed did not provide additional benefits in terms of zootechnical performance, water quality, and tambaqui health under the applied experimental conditions.

Summary: This study focused on finding a more effective and safer antigenic fraction to develop a vaccine against streptococcosis in Nile tilapia. The insoluble fraction vaccine showed the best protective effect with a 100% relative percent of survival. The spleen may play a key role in the vaccine response in Nile tilapia.

Summary: This study aimed to identify and analyze the antibacterial susceptibility of bacteria in a veterinary autopsy room, and to test the effectiveness of two sanitizers against these microorganisms. The results indicated that hypochlorite was the most effective sanitizing agent and highlighted the importance of alerting professionals to the biological risks and precautions they should take.

Sodium chloride against Dawestrema cycloancistrium in juvenile Arapaima gigas

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the use of sodium chloride against monogenoid trematodes infestations in pirarucu. The results showed that sodium chloride had a good anthelmintic effect on the parasites at certain concentrations, but it also had some physiological effects on the fish. Furthermore, all the parasites found in the gills were identified as a specific type of monogenoid.

Dietary protein requirement for tambaqui cultivated in biofloc and clear water systems

Raphael Brito dos Santos, Juda Izel-Silva, Paulo Adelino de Medeiros, Michelle Midori Sena Fugimura, Thiago Mendes de Freitas, Eduardo Akifumi Ono, Gustavo da Silva Claudiano, Elizabeth Gusmao Affonso

Summary: This study compared the effects of different feed crude protein levels in biofloc vs. clear water systems on the growth performance, digestive enzymes, and body composition of tambaqui juveniles. The results showed that tambaqui reared in the biofloc system exhibited better performance indices, such as feed conversion and protein efficiency rates, as well as higher trypsin activity. However, no significant differences were found in tambaqui proximal composition and other digestive enzymes. These findings suggest that a feed containing 24% crude protein can be offered to tambaqui in both systems.

Immunophysiology of tambaqui fed with different levels of dietary protein in biofloc and clear water system

Raphael Brito dos Santos, Juda Izel-Silva, Paulo Adelino de Medeiros, Michelle Midori Sena Fugimura, Thiago Mendes de Freitas, Silvia Umeda Gallani, Gustavo da Silva Claudiano, Eduardo Akifumi Ono, Elizabeth Gusmao Affonso

Summary: The present study evaluated the immunophysiological response in Colossoma macropomum fed with different levels of dietary protein in a biofloc (BFT) and in clear-water (CW) system and under infection with Aeromonas jandaei. The results showed that there were no significant differences in the physiological conditions of the fish between the different rearing systems and protein levels. However, fish raised in the biofloc system showed improved immunological resistance and higher survival rates after bacterial infection.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary MOS supplementation on immune responses in fish after vaccination with a novel vaccine. The results showed that adding MOS after vaccination did not significantly enhance vaccine efficacy, which could be attributed to the high efficacy of the vaccine itself.
