ASSESSMENT OF GENOTOXICITY OF VINCRISTINE, VINBLASTINE AND VINORELBINE IN HUMAN CULTURED LYMPHOCYTES: A COMPARATIVE STUDY

Vincristine (VCR), vinblastine (VBL) and vinorelbine (VRL) are anticancer agents from the Vinca alkaloid family that have the potential to induce genotoxic effect. The aim of the present study was to compare the genotoxic effect of VCR, VBL and VRL. Levels of 8-hydroxy-2-deoxy guanosine (8-OHdG) and sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) were measured in cultured human blood lymphocytes treated with VCR, VBL and VRL at concentrations of 0.01 and 0.1 mu g/mL. Results showed that VCR, VBL and VRL significantly increased the 8-OHdG levels (p < 0.05), whereas it did not cause a significant increase in the frequencies of SCEs in human blood lymphocytes as compared to controls. On the other hand, all three agents significantly increased cells mitotic index (p < 0.05). At both tested concentrations, the magnitude of the increase in 8-OHdG was VBL>VCR>VRL. In conclusion, VCR, VBL and VRL induce DNA damage as indicated by the increase in the 8-OHdG biomarker but with different magnitude.

ANTI-MICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF JORDANIAN PLANT EXTRACTS AGAINST HELICOBACTER PYLORI

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of various fractions from selected plant extracts in inhibiting the growth of H. pylori strains. Ethanol extracts showed the highest ability to inhibit H. pylori growth. The chloroform fraction from A. inculata, I. viscose, and ethanol extracts from M. vulgare and T. stans showed the highest activity against H. pylori strains.

PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF ESSENTIAL OILS OF OCIMUM BASILICUM, GALIUM ODORATUM, AND CYMBOPOGON CITRATUS AGAINST OXIDATIVE DNA DAMAGE IN CULTURED HUMAN LYMPHOCYTE CELLS

Summary: The protective effect of essential oils from Ocimum basilicum, Galium odoratum, and Cymbopogon citratus against oxidative DNA damage in cultured human lymphocytes was investigated in this study. Results showed that G. odoratum oil significantly decreased the biomarker 8-hydroxy deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in cultured cells at all examined concentrations, with decreases ranging between 31-39% (p<0.01). C. citratus oil also significantly decreased 8-OHdG at concentrations of 1 and 2 uL/mL, with decreases of 34% and 44% respectively (p<0.05). Similarly, O. basilicum significantly decreased 8-OHdG at concentrations of 1 and 2 uL/mL (p<0.005), with decreases of about 62% at both concentrations. In conclusion, the examined essential oils demonstrated potent antioxidative DNA damage activity in cultured human lymphocytes.

The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on tobacco use: A population-based study

Attitudes Toward Providing Open Access for Use of Biospecimens and Health Records: A Cross-Sectional Study from Jordan

Summary: This study aims to assess the public's opinions in Jordan toward providing blanket consent for using biospecimens and health records in research. The results showed that although the majority of the public were aware of clinical research, only a small percentage had participated in this type of research. While about half of the participants agreed on blanket consent for the use of clinical samples, a lower percentage agreed on open access to their health records. Privacy concerns and lack of trust in the researcher were cited as major barriers to providing blanket consent.

Health-Related Quality of Life for Jordanian-Recovered Individuals During Post-COVID-19 Era: A Cross-Sectional Study

Summary: This study aims to determine the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of recovered COVID-19 patients and investigates the impact of variables such as infection period, sample demographics, hospitalization history, and chronic disease history on their HRQoL. The results showed that the physical well-being of the participants during COVID-19 was medium, while the psychological well-being was also medium. Multiple regression analysis revealed that female recovered patients who are not working, have a low income, and are married, as well as those who experienced multiple COVID-19 infections, have lower HRQoL compared to other recovered patients. The findings suggest the need for policymakers and healthcare workers to explore effective strategies to improve the HRQoL of COVID-19 patients, especially for elderly patients and those with a history of multiple infections and hospitalizations.

Medication Adherence and Its Associated Factors Among Outpatients with Heart Failure

Summary: This study found that 23.5% of patients with heart failure had poor medication adherence. Patients with higher education and no medication-related side effects were more likely to have moderate adherence, while those taking statins or ACEIs/ARBs were more likely to have high adherence. Implementing intervention programs to improve patients' perception of prescribed medications, particularly for those with low educational levels, receiving anticoagulants, and not receiving statins or ACEIs/ARBs, is important.

Blood pressure control and its associated factors in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes

Summary: This retrospective study examined the medical records of hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes to identify factors associated with poor blood pressure control. Binary regression analysis revealed that retinopathy and not receiving DPP4 inhibitors were independently associated with uncontrolled blood pressure. The findings suggest a need for greater efforts to improve blood pressure control, particularly in hypertensive patients with retinopathy.

Mental health of COVID-19 recovered individuals: A national study from Jordan

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between COVID-19 infection and long-term mental consequences among recovering patients. The findings show that individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 are susceptible to mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. Factors such as employment status, tobacco use, and severity of infection are associated with this susceptibility.

Biofilm formation by E. coli and S. aureus on cellphone cover: sensitivity to commercially available sanitizers

Summary: Presence of pathogens on cellphones and accessories is a significant public health risk. This study investigated the biofilm-forming capability of S. aureus and E. coli on different cell phone pieces and tested the effectiveness of common sanitizers. Results showed that S. aureus and E. coli can form biofilms on all cellphone covers. Sanitizers containing sodium hypochlorite 5.25% and ethanol/dodecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride 38.9% were most effective in reducing viable cells in biofilms compared to other sanitizers. In conclusion, cellphone covers are suitable surfaces for biofilm formation, and certain sanitizers show higher efficacy against these biofilms.

Health-related quality of life and its associated factors in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Summary: This study evaluated the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among COPD patients and explored the factors associated with poor HRQOL. The study found that an increased number of prescribed medications, older age, male gender, low education level, and low average income were associated with poorer HRQOL. On the other hand, being married, living in a rural area, non-use of steroids inhalers, not receiving long acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMA) and LABA, and medication adherence were associated with improved HRQOL. Furthermore, lower disease severity and absence of comorbidities were associated with better HRQOL.
