BACKGROUND: Several studies have assessed the fitness level of students to evaluate physical condition, compare groups with differences in social disadvantage and to define indexes for post training programs. Often, these large surveys compared groups without normative value that could define the real, practical gaps. Thus, the aim of this study was the definition of baseline values describing the fitness level of sedentary European students. METHODS: Standing broad jump (SBJ), sit up (SUP) and sit and reach (SAR) physical fitness tests were assessed on 31,476 students (age=11-13) from 6 European countries were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: The effect size for multiple groups ANOVA was obtained to verify the biological consistence of differences. Then, weighted-means were calculated and stratified for age and gender. Overall, boys obtained SAR scores close to zero, while girls obtained results between 2 and 7 cm. The SUP test revealed similar results between boys and girls (about 20). SBJ performances were similar among countries (over 160 cm for boys and 150 for girls). CONCLUSIONS: Our results were aligned to other studies performed in other Continents or Countries and can contribute to the establishment of a large and objective reference to readily evaluate the physical fitness and health-related status of young students.

Players at home: Physical activity and quality of life in 12-17 years-old football (soccer) players during the Covid-19 lockdown

Matteo Zago, Nicola Lovecchio, Manuela Galli

Summary: The study found that during the lockdown period, the majority of young football players had reduced football activity time, with more individual practice and less organized team play. Less than half of the participants engaged in football for 7 hours or more weekly, and about 20% practiced football for less than 1 hour per week. Age and geographical background were factors influencing the amount of physical activity and quality of life among youth.

A Study on the Intersection of Ground Reaction Forces during Overground Walking in Down Syndrome: Effects of the Pathology and Left-Right Asymmetry

Johanna Vielemeyer, Cristina Sole, Manuela Galli, Matteo Zago, Roy Mueller, Claudia Condoluci

Summary: This study compared the dynamic gait function of individuals with Down Syndrome to healthy controls using the concept of the virtual pivot point (VPP). The results showed that individuals with Down Syndrome had an anteriorly located VPP compared to healthy controls, likely due to larger hip moments during the propulsive phase of stance. High R-2 values in individuals with Down Syndrome suggest a strong association between the VPP and dynamic stability during walking.

Video analysis of Achilles tendon rupture in male professional football (soccer) players: injury mechanisms, patterns and biomechanics

Francesco Della Villa, Matthew Buckthorpe, Fillippo Tosarelli, Matteo Zago, Stefano Zaffagnini, Alberto Grassi

Summary: This study describes the mechanisms, situational patterns, and biomechanics of Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) injuries in professional male football players. The findings show that ATRs mostly occur during accelerations and are predominantly non-contact injuries. The most common situational patterns are forward acceleration from standing, cross-over cutting, and vertical jumping. The biomechanics involve multiplanar loading, mainly in the sagittal plane, of the injured Achilles tendon. A significant number of ATRs occur in the first 30 minutes of match time.

Self-Declared Physical Activity Levels and Self-Reported Physical Fitness in a Sample of Italian Adolescents during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Alessandro Gatti, Lorenzo Pugliese, Vittoria Carnevale Pellino, Marco Del Bianco, Matteo Vandoni, Nicola Lovecchio

Summary: Only 20% of children worldwide reach the suggested physical activity levels, and the COVID-19 restrictions seemed to have worsened this situation. This study investigated reported physical activity and physical fitness levels in a group of Italian adolescents and found that most participants had low levels of physical activity but adequate physical fitness levels. Specifically, participants who reported a very good perception of physical fitness had lower levels of physical activity. This suggests that adolescents have a misperception of their own physical activity and physical fitness, which may lead to a decrease in their physical activity levels.
