The United States (US) and the People's Republic of China (China) have the most patents in nanotechnology in their own depositories and overall in the international depositories. This paper compares nanotechnology landscapes between 2001 and 2017 as reflected in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). It presents the evolution of nanotechnology patent development in the US and China, the differences between nanotechnology topics addressed in the USPTO and CNIPA patents, key players in nanotechnology fields in both domestic and foreign markets, and the player collaboration patterns. Bibliographic, content, and social network analyses are used. The longitudinal changes of granted patents and ranked countries, patent families, technology fields, and key players in domestic and overseas markets are outlined. Collaboration networks of assignees and the influential players have been identified based on network parameters. Results show that the US market attracts more international collaborations and has a higher level of knowledge exchange and resource sharing than the Chinese market. Companies play a vital role with regard to US nanotechnology development, resulting in more within-industry collaborations. In contrast, universities and research institutes are the dominant contributors to China's nanotechnology development, leading to more academia-industry collaborations in China's market.

A Compact Wideband Antenna With Suppressed Mutual Coupling for 5G MIMO Applications

Yifeng Qin, Long Zhang, Chun-Xu Mao, Hongyi Zhu

Summary: In this letter, a novel miniaturized wideband dual-polarized antenna for MIMO applications is proposed. It is based on cross magnetic dipoles and a backed cavity. The antenna utilizes dipoles with exponential curvature edges and introduces four parasitic resonators to enhance its impedance matching. It also employs a wideband hybrid ring coupler to generate +/- 45 degrees polarization. The prototype of the antenna is fabricated and measured, showing good agreement with simulation results.

A highly efficient piezoelectric elastomer with a green product cycle from fabrication to degradation

Xinyu Wang, Qinan Zhang, Hongyi Zhu, Fang Wu, Yanxiu Qiao, Kaihong Jia, Yong Xiang, Xiaoran Hu

Summary: A design concept for a piezoelectric elastomer with improved flexibility, biocompatibility, and energy output is proposed. The elastomer, prepared by copolymerization of lactate, 1,4-butanediol, and sebacate monomers, generates higher piezoelectric charge than traditional materials. It also demonstrates good biocompatibility, making it promising for future wearable and implantable technologies.

Carbene Cross-Linking in Gas-Phase Peptide Ion Scaffolds

Hongyi Zhu, Vaclav Zima, Emily R. Ding, Frantisek Turecek

Summary: Scaffolds were synthesized and used for the study of intramolecular peptide-carbene cross-linking in gas-phase cations. Carbene intermediates were generated by UV-laser photo-dissociation and the cross-linked products were detected and quantified. The presence of certain residues affected the yield of cross-linked products. Experiments and analysis revealed that cross-links involved specific amino acid residues and functional groups.

Mangiferin inhibits chronic stress-induced tumor growth in colorectal liver metastases via WAVE2 signaling pathway

Yiming Tao, Xuefei Tian, Jia Luo, Hongyi Zhu, Yi Chu, Lei Pei

Summary: Evidence suggests that the active compound mangiferin (MGF) can alleviate chronic stress-induced tumor growth and depressive behavior in colorectal liver metastases (CLM). MGF exerts its effects by inhibiting the WAVE2 signaling pathway and reducing depression-related cytokines. These findings suggest that MGF treatment may be beneficial for CLM patients.

A polarization-insensitive ultra-wideband absorber based on hybrid structure

Kun Xue, Haoliang Sun, Yifeng Qin, Hongyi Zhu, Shaohua Dong

Summary: With the advancement in detection technology, the survivability of battlefield targets is being challenged. Therefore, microwave absorbers with stealth characteristics are of significant research value in modern military applications. In this study, an ultra-wideband absorber (UWB) based on a hybrid structure is proposed to address the issues of limited bandwidth and complex structure. A polarization-insensitive UWB absorber (PIUWA) is designed, manufactured, and characterized, exhibiting an absorptivity of over 90% across a frequency range of 4 to 24.53 GHz (with a fractional bandwidth of 144%) by inducing multiple resonance peaks in the hybrid structure. The subwavelength periodicity of the PIUWA provides good angular stability under full-wave polarizations. The operating mechanism of the PIUWA is explained using an equivalent circuit model, and the design correctness is confirmed through experimental measurements. This study contributes to the development of UWB microwave absorbers with high absorptivity, good angular stability, and simplified assembly procedures.

Low-Profile Compact Tri-Band Multimode Reconfigurable Antenna Using Characteristic Mode Analysis

Yifeng Qin, Long Zhang, Chunxu Mao, Hongyi Zhu

Summary: A low-profile compact tri-band (2.45/3.5/5.8 GHz) reconfigurable antenna with versatile radiation modes is proposed for portable wireless communication in this study. The antenna consists of a patch radiator with T-shaped cuts, meander-slot defected ground, and shorting pins, which enables three frequency bands with different radiation patterns. The antenna features a compact volume and exhibits omnidirectional radiations at 2.45 and 5.8 GHz and unidirectional radiation at 3.5 GHz. By applying different dc biases to the varactors, the operating bands can be tuned. The fabricated antenna shows good agreement between measured and simulated results. This miniaturized tri-band antenna has potential applications in portable wireless services and intelligent transport devices.

Long-time enrofloxacin processing with microbial fuel cells and the influence of coexisting heavy metals (Cu and Zn)

Hongyi Zhu, Xueli Hu, Zhengtai Zha, Fangfang Cai, Yuanhang Zhou, Shun Zhou, Juanjuan Yao, Zhi Zhang

Summary: This study investigates the coexistence of antibiotics and heavy metals in livestock wastewater and their impact on antibiotic degradation by microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The results indicate that the presence of heavy metals and enrofloxacin can enhance the power output of MFCs and their ability to remove antibiotics. The coexistence of heavy metals also stabilizes the performance of MFCs in response to changes in COD or enrofloxacin concentrations. It is suggested that Comamonas bacteria have high adaptability to wastewater containing heavy metals and antibiotics and may be a functional bacterium for electricity production and antibiotic degradation in MFCs.
