Summary: The evaluation of the spatial and temporal distribution of pollutants and the use of Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is crucial for assessing the anthropogenic burden on the environment. The SOM is an artificial neural network that can handle non-linear problems and is used for exploratory data analysis, pattern recognition, and variable relationship assessment. The review provides a description of the SOM operation principle, its application for obtaining pollution patterns, and advice for reporting and extracting valuable information from the model results.

Summary: Oxygen (O-2) plays a crucial role in regulating soil processes and biogeochemical cycles. However, accurately measuring soil O-2 variability is challenging, leading to the use of soil moisture as a proxy for O-2. However, relying solely on soil moisture measurements may lead to inaccurate estimations of soil O-2 levels.

Summary: Urban rivers and suburban rivers are influenced by different factors, with silicate weathering being an important source of conventional ions in the water of these two rivers. Bian river is mainly affected by agricultural non-point source pollution, while Tuo river is primarily influenced by natural factors, with little impact from human activities.

Summary: The study found that urbanization-induced changes in soil properties, such as increased soil pH and heavy metal enrichment, decreased soil mesofauna abundance and species richness, altered community structure, and mediated the effects of landscape changes on soil mesofauna communities. Urban forests, lightly disturbed by urbanization, showed the highest soil mesofauna abundance, supporting the intermediate disturbance hypothesis.

Summary: The development of industrial and agricultural technology has led to serious soil heavy metal pollution, which has a significant impact on the growth and quality of forage grass. This study analyzed the effects of heavy metal contaminated soil on forage quality and proposed an evaluation method. The experiment showed that heavy metal pollution hindered the growth of forage grass and caused a decrease in quality, posing a threat to the safe production of forage.

Summary: This study integrated Geodetector, a stepwise regression model, and a hierarchical Bayesian method to validate the GDSH framework in a large typical rice production area in southeastern China. Significant stratified heterogeneity of the bioaccumulation factor was observed among different subregions and pH strata. The soil-rice relationships and dominant factors varied by the subregions and pH levels, with different sensitivities to spatial heterogeneity.

Summary: Contaminated sites often exhibit vertical stratification heterogeneity due to local pollutant accumulation and complex hydrogeological conditions. This study proposes a novel three-dimensional interpolation method considering soil lithology and applies it to the study of PAHs contaminated sites. The results demonstrate the significant influence of soil lithology on pollutant transfer and interpolation accuracy in the vertical direction. The method improves the prediction accuracy of pollutant distribution and provides a innovative approach for depicting the three-dimensional spatial pattern of pollutants.

Summary: This article introduces a method called Variance-Octree-Kriging (VOK) to handle the three-dimensional interpolation problem of pollutants at contaminated sites. The VOK method is able to deal with the non-stationarity in variance of soil pollutants in the geographic space (G-space) and demonstrates higher interpolation accuracy in prediction.
