Summary: In this study, a novel approach for preparing membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) is proposed to optimize the interface combination and durability of proton exchange membrane (PEM) and catalyst layers (CLs). This approach combines a wet-contact interface design strategy and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) reinforcing technology. The MEAs prepared using the wet-contact process show significantly reduced interfacial resistance and charge-transfer resistance, improved electrochemical surface area, and superior power performance compared to conventional MEAs. The insertion of ePTFE reinforcement skeletons into the PFSA membrane also reduces hydrogen crossover and mechanical degradation.

Summary: In this study, response surface methodology was used to optimize the major operating parameters of direct ethanol fuel cells for maximum power density. A second-order model was established and validated experimentally, showing that cell temperature had the greatest impact on power density, followed by anode electrocatalyst loading and ethanol concentration. The experimental results closely matched the computed values, demonstrating the effectiveness of optimization through response surface methodology.

Summary: This study presents a modular tri-layer lung-inspired hybrid flow field (LHFF) design for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), incorporating advantages of 2D and 3D flow fields. The optimized LHFFs using response surface methodology and artificial intelligence methodology show a significant increase in maximum net power density, with high consistency between numerical and experimental results. The reliability of artificial intelligence in optimizing PEMFC flow field is demonstrated, providing a promising solution for improving flow fields in other electrochemical systems.

Summary: This study designed and fabricated an air-cooled PEMFC with a rated power of 1.1 kW for a sightseeing bus, which can extend the vehicle range from 40 km to 70 km. A voltage-based control logic of purging was proposed and verified to maintain a fuel utilization of 97.84% with a sufficient voltage recovery. The driving characteristics of three typical powertrain systems, FCEV, HBEV, and RE-FCEV, were compared, and the RE-FCEV combines the advantages of FCEV and HBEV with stable PEMFC output.

Summary: SPEEK is recognized as a promising alternative PEM in fuel cell applications due to its advantageous properties, but its proton conductivity is influenced by the degree of sulfonation. While high DS of SPEEK can produce high proton conductivity, excessive production of DS may have side effects on membrane stability. Therefore, finding the optimal DS of SPEEK is crucial for fabricating PEM alternatives.

Summary: A three-step method is proposed to increase the efficiency of activating a newly-built MEA, showing improvements in fuel cell performance by changing activation temperatures. Through CV and EIS testing, two new indexes were introduced to analyze the internal mechanism of the activation method. It was found that the three-step activation method includes pore digging effect and pore swelling effect, which contribute differently in Step 1 and Step 2.

Summary: The study found that temperature and wet side relative humidity have a more significant impact on vapor transport rate, while counter-current flow consistently outperformed co-current flow under the same conditions. New diffusivity correlations were proposed for the membrane module based on temperature, relative humidity, and pressure.

Summary: Coating a reinforced composite membrane with a hydrophilic Pt layer improves the durability of polymer membranes used in fuel cell applications. A Pt coating was introduced onto the composite membrane, resulting in increased hydrophilicity and better performance. The Pt-coated composite membrane showed less degradation and lower fluorine emission rate, making it a potential candidate for proton exchange membrane fuel cells.
