Summary: This article presents two cost-efficient antennas for 5G applications at 28 GHz based on dielectric gradient index dielectric lens. The first is a linearly polarized flat lens antenna (LP-FLA) for terrestrial 5G communications. The second is a novel circularly polarized stepped lens antenna (CP-SLA) for 5G satellite services. An efficient design method is proposed to optimize and conform the lens topology to the radiation pattern from the antenna feeder. 3D printing technique based on stereolithography is used to manufacture the antennas and verify their performance.

Summary: The support of multicast communications in 5G NR system poses challenges to system designers due to highly directional antennas. This study presents a globally optimal solution for multi-beam antenna operation in 5G mmWave systems. The results show that a single beam is always utilized for small cell radii, while the optimal number of beams is upper bounded by 3 for higher cell coverage and practical user ranges (5-50).

Summary: This article presents the use of a metasurface (MTS) to deflect the radiation beam of a mm-Wave antenna. The MTS, consisting of phase gradient resonators, is used to transform the incoming wavefront into a tilted planar wavefront. The MTS is fed via a gain enhanced dipole antenna with a tilted radiation beam. By printing a high refractive index surface in front of the radiator, the gain of the dipole antenna is enhanced. The prototype antenna covers the 27-30 GHz band and achieves a beam tilt of 20 degrees using the MTS, with a peak gain of 10 dB.

Summary: This article studies a shared aperture 4G LTE and 5G mm-wave antenna in mobile phones with enhanced mm-wave radiation in the display direction. A 5G mm-wave array, consisting of four slot elements, is constructed in the clearance of a 4G LTE antenna. To enhance the mm-wave radiation in the display direction, two groups of floating patches are applied. For the 4G LTE antenna, the measured -6 dB impedance bandwidths are 280 MHz (700-980 MHz) and 1220 MHz (1700-2920 MHz). For the 5G mm-wave array, the measured overlapped -10 dB impedance bandwidth is 2.7 GHz (25.1-27.8 GHz), and the measured mutual coupling among each element is lower than -16 dB. The measured peak gain in the display direction is 10.4 dBi within the 25.5-27.5 GHz range, and the 3 dB beam steering range reaches 90 degrees (45.-135.) with a gain higher than 7.5 dBi.
