Summary: Soil moisture is a key indicator in drought identification as it plays a fundamental role in governing water and energy balance as well as plant growth. This study compared and evaluated two surface SM datasets for drought analysis in China, finding significant correlations in drought characteristics between the two datasets. The results show higher drought duration and severity in arid and semiarid regions compared to humid regions, but both datasets show drying trends in humid regions.

Summary: The terrestrial carbon cycle plays a crucial role in the global carbon budget due to the significant exchange fluxes with the atmosphere. Drought has a negative impact on carbon absorption in terrestrial ecosystems. However, current models have uncertainties in capturing the carbon flux response to drought, affecting global carbon budget estimates. This study shows that assimilating satellite-derived surface soil moisture observations improves the modeling of carbon fluxes, with reduced errors in net ecosystem productivity and gross primary productivity. The assimilation of soil moisture also enhances the representation of inter-annual variability of carbon fluxes and atmospheric CO2 growth rate.

Summary: This study validated five state-of-the-art satellite soil moisture datasets in a humid region, showing variations in their performance, with CCI Combined performing the best and CCI Passive performing the worst. SMAP and CCI Combined had better correlation measures, and SMAP performed best in anomaly detection.

Summary: This study proposes an ANN method to reconstruct missing surface soil moisture records with good agreement with ground-based observations, especially in regions with low-density vegetation. The ANN model outperformed the OK model in reconstructing SM with absent swaths and in densely and sparsely vegetated regions.

Summary: Spatial downscaling is essential in regional applications of coarse-resolution passive microwave surface soil moisture (SSM) products. The proposed improved downscaling method utilizes MODIS Terra daily land surface temperature (LST) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) products as auxiliary data, resulting in a seamless downscaled SSM series at 1km spatial resolution for the Iberian Peninsula. The downscaled SSM data exhibits strong temporal correlation with precipitation events and good performance compared to alternative SSM datasets, confirming the efficiency and convenience of the proposed method in generating high-resolution SSM data.

Summary: It is crucial to obtain large-scale, long-term, and spatial continuous soil moisture (SM) data. However, data gaps exist, especially in China, due to various limitations. Machine Learning methods, particularly Random Forest, show the best performance in filling the gaps of ESA CCI SM data in China. Such strategies combining with ML methods are suggested for gap-filling CCI SM in China.

Summary: This study investigated agricultural drought characteristics in Yunnan Province, China, using ground meteorological data. The results show a decrease in drought intensity, an increase in frequency, an extension in duration, and a significant increase in severity. Different regions also show varying degrees of sensitivity to drought, with the southwest region exhibiting a continual increase in drought development.

Summary: This study proposed a spatiotemporal attention-based residual deep network (STARN) to fill the gaps in current microwave soil moisture data. Evaluation results showed that the STARN model performed well in reconstructing soil moisture gaps and outperformed five baseline models in terms of correlation and distribution patterns.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to develop an ATI-based soil moisture downscaling method that is free of vegetation cover effects. The study used ESA CCI soil moisture data and 1 km resolution ATI data, and corrected the bias of the soil moisture data using a modified method. The results show that the proposed method effectively reduced the bias and preserved the accuracy and temporal variability of the soil moisture data, making it applicable to areas with different vegetation cover densities.

Summary: In this study, the combination of active-passive ESA Climate Change Initiative soil moisture product with the Noah-MP land surface model is evaluated over Europe. The impact of different design choices on the performance of the data assimilation system is explored. The choice of observation errors, observation bias correction method, and atmospheric reanalysis dataset all affect the skill improvements.

Summary: The study assimilates ESA-CCI global surface SM product into SSMP model to develop a vertical soil moisture profile database for areas like Indian mainland. The model estimates SM using HSG information and the developed database is validated with IMD observed data. Additionally, the product is used for basin scale drought reconstruction in Wardha river basin in India.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatiotemporal variation in soil moisture in the South-to-North Water Transfer Jiangsu Water Supply Area and found an overall increasing trend in soil moisture over the past 29 years. The study also revealed a dry north and wet south distribution of soil moisture, with higher moisture in winter and autumn, and lower moisture in spring and summer.

Summary: Soil moisture plays a crucial role in regulating water circulation and energy balance. This study analyzes the spatial-temporal changes of soil moisture in the Yellow River Basin using satellite remote sensing data. The relationships between soil moisture and factors such as normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), precipitation, air temperature, and wind speed are explored. The results indicate a decreasing trend of soil moisture in the Yellow River Basin over the past 16 years, with a humid trend in the upper reaches and an obvious drought trend in the middle reaches. NDVI and precipitation are found to be the primary factors influencing soil moisture changes.

Summary: Soil moisture is a crucial variable in the exchange of water and energy between the atmosphere and land surface. This study proposes a new method for reconstructing soil moisture data from the European Space Agency's Climate Change Initiative program, which shows better agreement with in situ observations and restores the spatial variability of soil moisture.
