Summary: This paper provides an updated review on the effects of turmeric and its constituent, curcumin, on metabolic syndrome (MS). Studies have shown that turmeric and curcumin have beneficial effects on different components of MS, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, anti-obesity, and antihypertensive effects. The findings suggest that turmeric or curcumin may serve as a complementary therapy for MS. However, more clinical trials are needed to confirm these effects.

Summary: Perinatal mental health problems are common and many women do not access care for these issues. This study aimed to review previous systematic reviews and identify barriers and facilitators to women seeking help and accessing perinatal mental health care. The findings highlight the need for increased awareness, reduced stigma, and woman-centred, flexible care.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the 1-year recovery rates for young people with depression and/or anxiety who did not receive specific mental health treatment. A total of five articles with 1011 participants were included in the analysis. The findings showed that the 1-year recovery rates ranged from 47% to 64%. The meta-analysis revealed an overall pooled proportion of 0.54 (0.45 to 0.63) for recovered young people. It is important to note that about 54% of young people without specific treatment were able to recover from depression and/or anxiety after 1 year. Future research should focus on identifying individual characteristics that predict recovery and exploring resources and activities that aid in the recovery process.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined motor alterations in individuals with depression and anxiety disorders compared to healthy individuals, as well as the effects of experimental manipulations of the motor system within these clinical groups. The findings indicate that there are significant motor differences between clinical and healthy groups, and manipulating the motor system can have effects on affective outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between the consumption of ultra-processed food and mental disorders through a synthesis and meta-analysis of previous research. The findings suggest that greater consumption of ultra-processed food is associated with increased odds of depressive and anxiety symptoms, as well as an increased risk of subsequent depression.

Summary: This study found a high prevalence of comorbid major depressive disorder in schizophrenia patients, with factors like publication year, study size, assessment tools, comorbid conditions, demographics, hospitalizations, and antidepressant use influencing the prevalence rate. Further research is needed to explore other potential factors contributing to the high prevalence of SZ-MDD.

Summary: Recent evidence suggests that the precuneus is involved in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. The precuneus is a complex structure in the parietal lobe that plays a crucial role in multimodal integration. It has extensive connections with different brain regions and serves as a link between external stimuli and internal representations.

Summary: People with mental disorders often have difficulties in social cognition, which has a genetic basis. This review evaluated the association between social cognition and polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for mental disorders. The results showed that currently available PRSs do not explain variation in social cognition performances. Future research should focus on developing transdiagnostic PRSs, studying their interaction with environmental risk factors, and standardizing outcome measurement.

Summary: This systematic literature review found that the period experienced during the COVID-19 virus and associated social regulations caused significant psychosocial stress in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorder. The study observed changes in delusional characteristics, particularly an increase in diagnoses of brief psychotic disorder. It is predicted that there will be a rise in diagnoses of schizophrenia spectrum disorder in the future due to both environmental and biological factors.

Summary: This study aims to understand the correlation between personal recovery from schizophrenia and factors such as mentalization, disability, quality of life, and antipsychotic side effects. The findings revealed that there is a positive association between recovery assessment scale (RAS) scores and multidimensional mentalizing questionnaire (MMQ) scores, especially in good mentalizing subdomains. Insight orientation scale (IOS) scores also showed a positive correlation with RAS and MMQ scores. On the other hand, poor mentalizing abilities were negatively correlated with WHO Disability Assessment Schedule (WHO-DAS) 2.0 scores. While antipsychotic side effects influenced functioning, they did not impact perceived recovery. These findings could contribute to tailored interventions for facilitating the recovery process.

Summary: The study aimed to compare sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, as well as emotional and behavioral dimensions, between males and females with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The findings showed that male BPD patients had more involuntary hospitalizations and higher substance abuse rates, while female BPD patients had more medication abuse. Additionally, females exhibited higher levels of alexithymia, hopelessness, and sensory sensitivity, and employed certain coping strategies more frequently. These gender differences highlight the importance of developing specific and differential treatments for males and females with BPD.

Summary: Understanding the cognitive processes related to mental pain in individuals with psychotic disorders is crucial for improving therapeutic strategies. This study explored the potential link between mental pain, mind wandering, and self-reflection in individuals diagnosed with psychotic disorders. The results showed a direct correlation between mind wandering and mental pain, as well as an inverse correlation between self-reflection and mental pain. These findings suggest that interventions targeting mind wandering and enhancing self-reflection may be beneficial for treating psychotic patients.
