Environmental pollution from metals needs to be constantly monitored due to their predominantly negative impacts on living organisms. As apian products stored in hives are considered useful bioindicators, the objective of this study was to: (a) investigate and compare the essential and toxic metal concentrations in freshly constructed combs (light combs, LC) and old combs (dark combs, DC) in use for two to three beekeeping seasons, and (b) compare the mineral content of beeswax combs from apiaries exposed to different levels of environmental pollution using the energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence method. Concentrations of ten elements (Cr, Pb, Cu, Ni, Fe, Zn, Mn, Sr, Rb, Ca) were determined in 18 honeybee wax comb samples from three apiaries in continental Croatia. The results showed that the influence of comb age and/or geographical origin (representing varying levels of environmental pollution exposure) on the elemental composition of beeswax was evident for the toxic elements Cr, Pb, Cu and Ni, and for the essential elements Fe, Zn, Mn and Sr, but not Rb. In addition to monitoring the environmental element content, wax combs can be used to determine contamination levels. Additionally, in-time analysis results can enable beekeepers to adjust management practices, such as moving apiaries to better positions. They can also be useful in the creation of policies on acceptable limits for toxic metal levels in particular geographical areas.

Summary: Honey bees play a vital role in pollination and ecological services, significantly impacting crop productivity and the economy. However, they are susceptible to infections by various pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasitic mites, which pose a threat to their health and well-being.

Summary: Propolis, a honeybee product, contains bioactive compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antimicrobial effects. Studies have shown that representative polyphenols and extracts of propolis exhibit pharmacological effects by targeting similar pathways related to inflammation, proliferation, and antioxidant mechanisms.

Summary: This study compared the chemical composition, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity of propolis extracts obtained with nonaqueous polyethylene glycol (PGEP) and ethanol (EEP). Both extracts contained all ten markers of antioxidant activity, with higher concentrations in EEP. Antimicrobial activity was observed against most investigated pathogens and biofilms.

The Impact of Beehive Proximity, Human Activity and Agricultural Intensity on Diptera Diversity in a Mediterranean Mosaic of Agroecosystems, with a Focus on Pest Species

Summary: Our study provides baseline information on Diptera and Vespidae diversity in the Mediterranean mosaic of agroecosystems and summarizes the impact of human activities on insect diversity. Through trapping near beehives, we conducted an inventory of Diptera in Croatia and identified pests and newly introduced species. The results indicate that species richness of Diptera and pests is influenced by human activities. The number of honeybee colonies negatively correlates with species richness, while anthropogenic influence has a positive effect.

Influence of Probiotic Feed Supplement on Nosema spp. Infection Level and the Gut Microbiota of Adult Honeybees (Apis mellifera L.)

Summary: The research investigates the presence and comparison of gut microbiota groups in control and Nosema spp.-infected honeybee colonies through high-throughput sequencing. The EM (R) probiotic for bees is hypothesized to have an important role in therapeutic and immunomodulatory effects on honeybee colonies. The study found that EM (R) for bees treatment can alter and improve the gut microbiome composition, mitigate the influence of Nosema spp. infection, and protect honeybees from herbicide glyphosate negative effects.
