Background To investigate the thinning rate of three-dimensional neuroretinal rim thickness (3D-NRT) in glaucoma eyes with optic disc haemorrhage (DH) and its relationship to retinal nerve fibre layer thickness (RNFLT) progression. Methods Ninety-five (95) eyes of 95 glaucoma patients with initial DH in the inferotemporal (n=69) and superotemporal (n=26) regions and 48 eyes of 48 glaucoma patients without DH were retrospectively reviewed. The rates of change for 3D-NRT and RNFLT were compared by linear mixed-effect model. For the direct comparison between 3D-NRT and RNFLT, dynamic-range-based normalised coefficient was used. The effect of DH frequency on the rates of thinning of 3D-NRT and RNFLT was evaluated. Results During a mean 7-year follow-up, the rates of thinning of 3D-NRT (-5.69 +/- 4.88 mu m/year) and RNFLT (-2.03 +/- 2.03 mu m/year) at 7 o'clock were faster than those at other locations (all p<0.05) in DH eyes. The dynamic-range-based normalised rate of thinning was significantly faster for RNFLT (-2.06%+/- 1.62%/year) than for 3D-NRT (-1.15%+/- 1.10%/year, p<0.001) in DH eyes, but not in non-DH eyes (p=0.43). DH frequency in the inferotemporal region was associated with the thinning rate of 3D-NRT as well as RNFLT. Conclusion DH eyes are associated with the progression of both 3D-NRT and RNFLT, especially in the inferotemporal region. DH eyes show a relatively faster thinning rate of average RNFLT than 3D-NRT. The frequency of DH can affect the progression of 3D-NRT as well as RNFLT.

Wide-field optical coherence tomography deviation map for early glaucoma detection

Hyungjun Kim, Hae Min Park, Hyo Chan Jeong, So Yeon Moon, Hyunsoo Cho, Han Woong Lim, Mincheol Seong, Junhong Park, Won June Lee

Summary: This study aimed to establish a wide-field optical coherence tomography (OCT) deviation map for the detection of early glaucoma (EG). The wide-field deviation map showed high diagnostic ability and visualized a wider damaged area, making it useful for EG diagnosis in clinical settings.

Association of progressive optic disc tilt with development of retinal nerve fibre layer defect in children with large cup-to-disc ratio

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between optic disc morphological changes during myopia progression and the development of retinal nerve fiber layer defect (RNFLD). The results showed that progressive optic disc tilt during myopia progression was associated with a higher risk of RNFLD development in children with large vertical cup-to-disc ratio (vCDR).

Summary: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of infantile cataract (IC) surgery and the risk of secondary glaucoma in the Korean population. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the Korean National Health Claims database. The study found that the annual incidence of IC surgery ranged from 5.10 to 9.29 cases per 100,000 individuals, and the incidence rate of post-IC surgery glaucoma was 2.29 per 100 person-years. Factors such as intraocular lens implantation were found to reduce the risk of post-IC surgery glaucoma.

Summary: This nationwide retrospective cohort study aimed to determine the incidence of Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) and the risk of secondary glaucoma. The study utilized the Korean National Health Insurance claims database and the rare disease registry to identify confirmed SWS patients. The results showed that the mean birth-cohort SWS incidence was 3.08 per 100,000 people per year, and 8.3% of SWS patients developed SWS-associated glaucoma.

Summary: This study found that placebo is effective in lowering intraocular pressure and is superior to the effect observed in untreated control participants. However, caution is required in interpreting the results due to the limited number of trials with untreated control groups and the lack of direct comparison between placebo and untreated arms.

Association between visual impairment and risk of suicide: Protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis

Chung Young Kim, Ahnul Ha, Sung Ryul Shim, In Boem Chang, Young Kook Kim

Summary: This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the association between visual impairment (VI) and risk of suicide. The findings of this study will contribute to our current knowledge of the impact of VI as a risk factor of suicide. Additionally, meta-regression and subgroup analyses will provide further insights to factors affecting the association between VI and suicide risk.

Natural History of Optic Disc With Physiologic Large Cup: Incidence, Predictors of Glaucoma Conversion After Minimum 10-Year Follow-up

Sooyeon Choe, Young Kook Kim, Ki Ho Park, Hyuk Jin Choi, Jin Wook Jeoung

Summary: This study investigated the natural history of optic disc with physiologic large cup (PLC), as well as the risk factors for glaucoma conversion. The study identified higher VCDR, violation of the inferior superior nasal temporal neuroretinal rim thickness rule, presence of retinal arterial sclerosis, and lower total bilirubin level as factors associated with glaucoma development.

Visual Impairment Risk After Alcohol Abstinence in Patients With Newly Diagnosed Open-Angle Glaucoma

Yoon Jeong, Su Hwan Kim, Goneui Kang, Hyung-Jin Yoon, Young Kook Kim, Ahnul Ha

Summary: This study found that abstaining from alcohol after being diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) was associated with a lower risk of severe visual impairment or blindness. These findings suggest that lifestyle interventions, such as alcohol abstinence, could be essential for newly diagnosed OAG patients.

Kyeong Ik Na, Won June Lee, Young Kook Kim

Summary: In this study, the prevalence of blindness in Korean adults was analyzed based on a sample of 10 million participants. The findings suggest a gradual decrease in the prevalence of blindness over a ten-year period, and identified specific systemic health conditions that are associated with blindness. These results provide valuable insights for public health policies and prevention/rehabilitation efforts for blindness.
