Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is an important cause of renal transplantation complications. It can cause different syndromes or end-organ diseases that can lead to unfavourable clinical outcomes and kidney allograft dysfunction. Although well documented as a systemic disease on renal transplant patients, affecting non-renal tissue, as gastrointestinal and respiratory tract, few cases have been reported in English-language indexed journals involving renal allograft lesions secondary to CMV. As an important differential diagnosis and etiological agent to acute and chronic rejection, the possibility of CMV kidney direct infection needs prompt recognition for effective treatment. In this paper, we will review the current literature about CMV nephritis and discuss the findings from each case report.

Summary: The study found that mRNA expression levels of PHLDA family members play important roles in the prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma, with low PHLDA1 mRNA expression and high PHLDA3 mRNA expression associated with worse overall survival, while high PHLDA2 mRNA expression linked to better survival outcomes.

Lipoprotein glomerulopathy associated with the Osaka/Kurashiki APOE variant: two cases identified in Latin America

Summary: Lipoprotein glomerulopathy (LPG) is a rare autosomal dominant disease caused by mutations in the APOE gene, mainly affecting Asian individuals but occasionally found in other ethnic groups. The report of two unrelated Brazilian patients with LPG suggests that the disease may not be as rare in Latin America as previously thought, highlighting the importance of considering LPG when nephrotic syndrome is present.

Summary: Variant morphologies and high-grade nuclear features occur in a subset of SDH-deficient renal cell carcinomas, which are associated with more aggressive behavior. Grading and SDHB immunohistochemistry are recommended for accurate classification and management, especially in younger patients.

Incorporation of TILs in daily breast cancer care: how much evidence can we bear?

Anne-Vibeke Laenkholm, Grace Callagy, Marcelo Balancin, John M. S. Bartlett, Christos Sotiriou, Caterina Marchio, Marleen Kok, Carlos Henrique Dos Anjos, Roberto Salgado

Summary: One of the key developments in breast cancer research is the improved understanding of TILs as prognostic and predictive biomarkers. Evaluating TILs through light microscopy is feasible and provides important prognostic information, although caution should be exercised due to heterogeneity.

Summary: The use of immune-checkpoint inhibitors has significantly improved survival in cancer patients, including a subgroup of women with breast cancer who may benefit from this treatment. Studies have shown that tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes are associated with response to both cytotoxic treatments and immunotherapy, particularly in patients with triple-negative breast cancer.

Summary: Membranous nephropathy (MN) is commonly associated with autoimmune thyroiditis, but rare with Graves' disease (GD). Diagnosis using PLA2R and immunohistochemistry can help determine the association between the two. Prior immunosuppressive corticosteroid therapy followed by radioactive iodine treatment may effectively reduce proteinuria levels in such cases.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on cervical cancer screening in Sao Paulo state, Brazil. The results showed a 56% decrease in tests performed in the first year of the pandemic, followed by a 53% increase in the second year. However, the percentage of women with normal findings or abnormalities remained unchanged, but there was an increase in the incidence of CIN-1 and CIN-3. This suggests a potential increase in cervical cancer occurrence in Brazil.

Summary: By studying tumor-associated macrophages in malignant pleural mesothelioma, we found that they mainly contribute to M2a and M2b phenotypes, and M2a, M2b, and M2c more specifically contribute to immune tolerance. CD206, ARG1, CD274, CD163, and MRP8-14 are potential therapeutic targets in this disease.
