Summary: Green and low cost deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have the potential to replace solid acids and ionic liquids in biomass fractionation. In this study, an acidic DES composed of Bronsted acid and Lewis acid was designed for lignin extraction from poplar sawdust. The bifunctional DES showed high lignin recovery, low polydispersity, and good recyclability.

Summary: The ion dynamics of null solvents consisting of 1ZnCl2:4EtG and 1ChCl:1ZnCl2:6EtG with the incorporation of 1M water, propylene carbonate (PC) or acetonitrile (AcN) were investigated. Various measurements, including 1H NMR spectra, spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) measurements, ionic conductivity, density and viscosity, were conducted to study the properties as a function of temperature. The results revealed increased free volume and dynamic heterogeneities in the mixtures, as well as selective interactions between hydrogen bond donors and acceptors, as well as with the co-solvents.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized ammonium-ethylene glycol-based ternary deep eutectic solvents (TDESs) and measured their thermophysical properties. The results showed that the TDESs exhibited superior properties compared to their constituent components. The viscosity, pH, and density decreased, while electrical conductivity increased with increasing temperature. These observations can be attributed to excitation phenomena and hydrogen bonding delocalization.

Summary: The study demonstrates a new strategy for capturing nitrogen dioxide (NO2) using deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and their aqueous mixtures. The results show that ChCl-based DESs have excellent NO2 absorption capability, which increases with increasing HBD content. Additionally, the DES aqueous mixtures retain high NO2 solubility while exhibiting a lower viscosity after the introduction of water.

Summary: Expenditure isolation of lignin and the understanding of its structural variations during different isolation processes are crucial for the high-value utilization of lignin. This study proposed a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) consisting of choline chloride, ethylene glycol, and 4-chlorobenzene sulfonic acid for rapid lignin separation from poplar. The structural variations of DES lignin and its relationship with alkali pre-extraction of hemicellulose were investigated. The results showed that alkali pretreatment enhanced the DES separation of lignin and promoted the cleavage of specific linkages, resulting in reduced molecular weight and thermal stability of isolated DES lignin. Moreover, DES lignin obtained from integrated utilization displayed higher purity and S/G ratio compared to lignin obtained from direct DES treatment.

Summary: An efficient catalysis process using deep eutectic solvents as catalyst and reaction medium was developed for the direct preparation of various primary O-thiocarbamates/carbamates and monosubstituted thioureas/ureas. The procedure showed moderate to excellent yields and the deep eutectic solvent could be easily recovered and reused for multiple cycles without significant loss in activity. Additionally, the method demonstrated good performance for synthesizing the desired products on a large scale.

Summary: A polymerizable type-IV deep eutectic solvent (DES) was synthesized through the coordination reaction between acrylamide and SbCl3, and it was demonstrated that the resulting type-IV DES-based polymers can exhibit luminescence after polymerization due to efficient Sb-ligand and ligand-ligand charge transfer. The quantum yield of Sb-ligand charge transfer emission can be tuned using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of acrylamide, reaching up to 15.32%. As a proof-of-concept, the polymerizable DES was successfully used as a fluorescent anti-counterfeit ink, achieving fluorescence encryption.

Summary: An efficient and mild method for the cycloaddition of CO2 to cyclic carbonates is reported. Iodized salt of DBU is used as hydrogen-bonding acceptor, 4-methoxyphenol is employed as hydrogen-bonding donor, and deep eutectic solvent is synthesized and characterized. The method is milder and more efficient than the literature reported.

Summary: A method using new extraction solvents is proposed for completely decolorizing textile wastewaters, aiming to drastically reduce water consumption. This technique allows for water reuse and addresses one of the textile industry's biggest challenges of generating enormous amounts of liquid residues. Dyes are the most common pollutants in these effluents, posing toxicity risks to humans, aquatic life, and the environment. Achieving full decolorization is essential for obtaining clean water that can be repurposed according to circular economy principles.

Summary: The effect of ammonium chloride on bismuth electrodeposition from choline chloride-urea deep eutectic solvent (DES) was investigated through spectroscopic, thermal, and electrochemical studies. The results showed that adding ammonium chloride slightly altered the melting point of the DES and modified the crystallization peaks during electrodeposition. Additionally, the presence of the ammonium salt influenced the crystallization behavior and morphology of bismuth deposits.

Summary: This paper used MATLAB for parameter fitting and the finite element method to construct a three-dimensional redox flow battery model. The effect of magnetic field on the battery performance was investigated, and it was found that the magnetic field can decrease the overpotential inside the electrode, improve the uniformity of ion distribution, increase the output voltage and energy conversion efficiency of the battery. Additionally, the magnetic field can promote a more uniform flow of the electrolyte by reducing its viscosity. The effect of dual N-pole placement on battery performance was also studied, and it was found that it can increase the maximum current density and charging and discharging energy conversion efficiency compared to the N-S pole scheme.

Summary: This study reported the first synthesis of 4H-pyran derivatives using electrochemical synthesis conditions and deep eutectic solvents in a one pot reaction. By optimizing the reaction conditions, high yields of pure pyran derivatives could be obtained in a short amount of time. The use of deep eutectic solvents also eliminated the need for a supporting electrolyte, improving the sustainability of the catalyst.
