Summary: Accurate early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for reducing mortality rates of prostate cancer. However, the lack of theranostic agents with tumor-targeting abilities hinders imaging sensitivity and therapeutic efficiency. To overcome this challenge, biomimetic cell membrane-modified Fe2O3 nanoclusters implanted in polypyrrole (CM-LFPP) have been developed, enabling photoacoustic/magnetic resonance dual-modal imaging-guided photothermal therapy of prostate cancer. CM-LFPP exhibits strong absorption in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II) and shows high photothermal conversion efficiency, excellent photoacoustic imaging capabilities, and good magnetic resonance imaging ability. The lipid encapsulation and biomimetic cell membrane modification allow active tumor targeting and low-dose photothermal therapy under laser irradiation.

Summary: Photothermal therapy (PTT) has gained attention due to its minimally invasive and spatiotemporally selective advantages. However, current PTT agents often require complex and environmentally hazardous fabrication procedures. This study presents a genetically engineered bacterium capable of synthesizing melanin nanoparticles under mild and environmentally friendly conditions. These biosynthetic melanin nanoparticles exhibit excellent biocompatibility, stability, and minimal toxicity. They also have a higher photothermal conversion efficiency than chemically synthesized melanin-like polydopamine nanoparticles. Additionally, the biosynthetic melanin nanoparticles show excellent performance in photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and can be used for PAI-guided PTT in vivo.

Summary: Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) utilizes endogenous chromophores and exogenous contrast agents to provide detailed information on diseased tissues, offering advantages in spatial resolution, tissue penetrability, and imaging contrast over traditional technologies. Recent developments in nanomaterials and organic dyes as PAI probes show promise for disease diagnosis and treatment, but challenges remain in designing and fabricating future PAI probes.

Summary: Efforts have been made to develop photoactivatable theranostics for cancer therapy using thermal ablation. Iron complexes have been identified as suitable agents with biocompatibility and body clearance. This study reports a series of Fe-II complexes with polypyridine or N-heterocyclic carbenes, which employ rational complex engineering to red-shift their MLCT-based excited-state deactivation. The non-radiative decay of the complexes' MLCT is exploited for theranostic purposes in photoacoustic imaging and photothermal therapy, while considering the structural modifications' impact on the solubility and stability of the complexes in aqueous media.

Summary: This study successfully increased the fluorescence intensity of CuInSe2 QDs and explored their heat-coupled photoacoustic signal for the first time; lower levels of Zn doping helped enhance fluorescence intensity, but excessive Zn caused a blue shift in emission peak. Cu-In-Zn-Se/ZnSe QDs coated with PMAO-g-PEG were prepared for dual-modal fluorescence and PA imaging applications.
