Summary: The study compared tear and saliva proteomes of SS patients and healthy controls, identifying alterations in protein levels and pathways. Dysregulated protease activity and differential expression of PRG4 in tears and saliva were found to be important in SS. These findings provide insights into the disease mechanism and potential drug targets.

Summary: This review summarizes recent advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of Sjogren's syndrome (SS), an autoimmune disorder that primarily affects secretory glands, leading to dry eye and dry mouth. The review also explores the correlations between oral and ocular manifestations of SS, highlighting the importance of understanding these connections for further research on SS pathogenesis and the development of new standards for diagnosis and treatment.

Summary: In this study, salivary metabolites were analyzed in pSS patients treated with low-dose doxycycline, untreated pSS patients, and healthy controls. The results showed differences in saliva metabolite profiles between pSS patients and healthy controls, with LDD treatment normalizing levels of certain metabolites. Further research is needed to investigate the role of saliva metabolome in pSS pathology and its potential for predicting or monitoring the disease.

Summary: This study investigates the frequency of dry oral and ocular manifestations and autoantibodies characteristic of primary Sjodgren's Syndrome in patients with Multiple Sclerosis. It found that even in the absence of comorbidities and the use of medications that can cause dry symptoms, MS patients may report xerostomia and/or xerophthalmia, which may fulfill the diagnostic criteria for pSS. The study suggests that there may be a link between these two diseases, but further research is needed to confirm this.

Summary: Primary SS is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by dysfunction of exocrine glands leading to dryness of eyes and mouth, with systemic manifestations in the majority of patients. Recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular and oral involvement include measuring tear osmolarity, new devices for tear constituents, and lip biopsy despite emerging non-invasive diagnostic techniques.

Summary: This study investigated the metabolic profile of blood monocytes in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), and found upregulation of genes involved in glycolysis. Monocytes from CAP patients had elevated levels of intracellular pyruvate and the TCA cycle intermediate alpha-ketoglutarate, and showed reduced cytokine production capacity upon LPS stimulation. Intracellular pyruvate concentration positively correlated with IL-18 and IL-10 levels released by CAP patients' monocytes. These findings suggest that elevated intracellular pyruvate levels may partially maintain cytokine production capacity in monocytes from CAP patients.

Summary: The study found that xerostomia and hyposalivation were significantly associated with factors such as medication use, diseases, and radiation therapy. Although these conditions were not prevalent in the population, clinicians should pay special attention to the salivary conditions of patients taking multiple medications, diagnosed with type II diabetes, and who have received radiation therapy to the head/neck region.

Summary: In this study, meibography of 65-year-old residents in Oslo, Norway was analyzed, and it was found that moderate meibomian gland atrophy was common and not gender-specific. Meibography alone cannot discriminate between meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and non-MGD, thus both morphological and functional tests are necessary for screening MGD.

Summary: Through metabolomics analysis, we found different metabolic profiles in patients with dry mouth conditions caused by head and neck cancer and primary Sjogren's syndrome. The dysregulation of purinergic signaling and amino acid metabolism may play a role in the pathophysiology of dry mouth. This finding is important for diagnosis and understanding the underlying mechanisms of dry mouth.

Summary: Nanotechnology has found unique applications in drug delivery, cosmetics, fabrics, water treatment, and food packaging. Chitosan, a nanoparticle derived from natural polysaccharide chitin, has gained attention in modern medicine for its unique properties. This review examines the cytotoxicity of chitosan nanoparticles in biomedical research, revealing low cytotoxicity regardless of particle composition or assay method. However, thorough characterization and cytotoxicity assessment are recommended for new chitosan derivatives and compositions before market implementation.

Summary: The present study explored the relationship between dry eyes and dry mouth and found that participants with a history of systemic diseases had more ocular and oral symptoms. There was a correlation between subjective ocular and oral parameters, and a significant correlation was also observed between the total number of drugs and ocular and oral symptoms. Participants troubled with severe dry eyes had poorer values for oral parameters.

Summary: The clinical presentation of primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) varies widely. A multicentre study identified two patient subgroups based on the presence of SSA/SSB antibodies and genetic markers in the HLA region, with strong association signals found in HLA-DQA1 locus for the antibody-positive subgroup. Replication confirmed the association with MHC class I and II variants, indicating distinct clinical manifestations in pSS subgroups.
