Summary: Widespread skin infections caused by bacteria and yeast pose a growing threat to healthcare systems. Phyto-photodynamic antimicrobial therapy using nanoengineered self-assembling bilosomes, with the combination of curcumin and Methylene Blue, shows higher efficiency in eliminating microbial cells compared to the individual components. This study provides evidence that this combination enhances the photo-eradication efficiency of Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, demonstrating the potential of innovative antimicrobial phyto-photodynamic therapy.

Summary: The study investigated the localization of TMPyP in Candida albicans before and after irradiation with visible light to understand the antifungal mechanism of aPDT. Results showed that the photosensitizer accumulated in the cell envelope before light irradiation, and entered the cytosol after treatment, suggesting damage to the cell wall. This finding may contribute to the development of more effective PS for fungal infections.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the optimal combinatorial parameters of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) mediated by methylene blue (MB) with the addition of potassium iodide (KI) against Candida species. The best parameters were found to be MB 0.1 mM, KI 400 mM, a light dose of 20 J/cm2, and a 5-minute incubation time of MB for Candida albicans.

Summary: The study demonstrated that PDT using 5-aminolevulinic acid as a photosensitizer had significant inhibitory activity against C. albicans biofilms. It induced cell apoptosis, cytoplasm degradation, nuclear condensation, and mitochondrial swelling, and reduced mRNA expressions of specific genes. This suggests that ALA-PDT may serve as a potential antifungal strategy for eliminating C. albicans biofilms.

Summary: Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT) has gained attention for inhibiting microbial growth and spread. Boron-dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs) are promising photosensitizers for antimicrobial applications. This study found that neutral BODIPYs can effectively photoinactivate Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans. One neutral compound (B9) showed the best photoinactivation of P. aeruginosa. Additionally, the compounds successfully inhibited biofilms of the three model microorganisms, with better results for S. aureus and P. aeruginosa.

Summary: Methylmalonic acidemia is an organic acidemia caused by deficient activity of L-methylmalonyl-CoA mutase or its cofactor cyanocobalamin. This study found that MMA has toxic effects on astroglial cells, leading to a decrease in cell metabolic viability, impairment of energy homeostasis, and compromised glutamate uptake and ATP content. These effects may be involved in the pathophysiology of neurological dysfunction in methylmalonic acidemia.
