Incidence and impact of anticoagulation-associated abnormal menstrual bleeding in women after venous thromboembolism

C. M. M. de Jong, M. Blondon, C. Ay, A. Buchmuller, J. Beyer-Westendorf, J. Biechele, L. Bertoletti, G. Colombo, M. P. Donadini, S. V. Hendriks, L. Jara-Palomares, S. Nopp, P. Ruiz-Artacho, P. Stephan, C. Tromeur, T. Vanassche, P. E. Westerweel, F. A. Klok

Summary: Preliminary data and clinical experience suggest an increased risk of abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) in women of reproductive age treated with anticoagulants, but there is a lack of solid data. In a study involving 98 women diagnosed with acute venous thromboembolism (VTE), 2 out of 3 women experienced AUB during anticoagulation treatment, with a significant negative impact on their quality of life (QoL).

Extracellular vesicles from amniotic fluid, milk, saliva, and urine expose complexes of tissue factor and activated factor VII

Yong Hu, Andreas Repa, Ton Lisman, Guelen Yerlikaya-Schatten, Chi Hau, Ingrid Pabinger, Cihan Ay, Rienk Nieuwland, Johannes Thaler

Summary: This study found that extracellular vesicles (EVs) in amniotic fluid, milk, saliva, and urine expose functional extrinsic tenase complexes that can trigger blood clotting. These EVs promote clotting in both normal plasma and FVII-deficient plasma, and their activity is inhibited by antibodies.

The prevalence of thrombocytopenia in patients with acute cancer-associated thrombosis

Charles Hsu, Rushad Patell, Jeffrey I. Zwicker

Summary: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) and thrombocytopenia are common complications in patients with cancer. This study evaluated the prevalence of thrombocytopenia among patients with acute cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT) and found that concurrent diagnoses of CAT and thrombocytopenia are very common, especially in patients with hematologic malignancies.

Plasma Clot Properties in Patients with Pancreatic Cancer

Johannes Thaler, Gerald Prager, Ingrid Pabinger, Cihan Ay

Summary: Using a modified plasma clot formation assay, we found an increased plasma clot formation rate and fibrin fiber thickness in pancreatic cancer patients compared to healthy controls. When a tissue factor blocking antibody was added, the clot formation rate decreased significantly in patients, fibrin fiber thickness decreased in patients and controls, the lag phase remained unchanged, and the time to peak fibrin generation increased in patients. These findings suggest the presence of a prothrombotic state in pancreatic cancer patients, dependent on tissue factor.

Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors-Associated Thrombosis: Incidence, Risk Factors and Management

Tzu-Fei Wang, Marc Carrier

Summary: Immune checkpoint inhibitors have become an integral part of cancer treatment, but they carry the risk of thrombosis, which can lead to various complications. Recent studies have shown that C-reactive protein dynamics may serve as a biomarker for thrombosis. Furthermore, early findings suggest that factor Xa inhibitors used for cancer-associated thrombosis may have potential synergistic antitumor effects when combined with ICIs.

Growth differentiation factor-15 and prediction of cancer-associated thrombosis and mortality: a prospective cohort study

Stephan Nopp, Florian Moik, Simon Kraler, Cornelia Englisch, Matthias Preusser, Arnold von Eckardstein, Ingrid Pabinger, Thomas F. Luescher, Cihan Ay

Summary: GDF-15 is strongly associated with survival in cancer patients, independent of established risk factors. Although an association was identified with ATE and VTE in univariable analysis, GDF-15 was not independently associated with these outcomes and failed to improve established VTE prediction models.
