Jiacai Cho, Joanne Lee, Ching-Hui Sia, Chieh Sian Koo, Benjamin Y. Q. Tan, Weizhen Hong, Ellie Choi, Xueying Goh, Louis Chai, Nisha Suyien Chandran, Horng Ruey Chua, Bernard Chan, Mark Muthiah, Ting Ting Low, Eng Soo Yap, Manjari Lahiri

Summary: This study aimed to describe the extrapulmonary manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 infection, including their frequency, onset, pathogenesis, and association with disease severity. The study found that early manifestations included olfactory and gustatory disturbance, gastrointestinal symptoms, and rash, while later manifestations included multiorgan complications and thromboembolic events. Uncommon complications such as Guillain-Barre syndrome, rhabdomyolysis, otitis media, meningoencephalitis, and spontaneous pneumomediastinum were also identified. In conclusion, there are two phases of extrapulmonary disease in SARS-CoV-2 infection, with the need for a multidisciplinary consensus to approach and define thromboinflammation and cytokine release syndrome.

Qualitative analysis of topical corticosteroid concerns, topical steroid addiction and withdrawal in dermatological patients

Sean Tan, Phillip Phan, Je Yin Law, Ellie Choi, Nisha Suyien Chandran

Summary: This study aimed to explore the phenomenon of topical corticosteroid (TCS) phobia and understand the factors driving concerns about TCS, particularly regarding steroid addiction and withdrawal. The study found that patients' attitudes towards TCS, availability of alternatives, treatment inconvenience, personality, patient's ongoing evaluation of clinical response to TCS, doctor-patient relationship, and healthcare-seeking behavior were the main factors influencing TCS concerns.

Zakiullah Ali, Christian Zakian, Qian Li, Jerome Gloriod, Sophie Crozat, Francois Bouvet, Guillaume Pierre, Vassilis Sarantos, Massimiliano Di Pietro, Krzysztof Flisikowski, Peter Andersen, Wolfgang Drexler, Vasilis Ntziachristos

Summary: A 360-degree, 50 Hz frame rate scanning capsule optoacoustic endoscope for human gastrointestinal tract imaging is reported in this study. The imaging penetration depth and translational potential of the instrument were validated using an intralipid solution to simulate light scattering in human esophageal tissue and a pig esophagus.

Nikolina-Alexia Fasoula, Angelos Karlas, Olga Prokopchuk, Nikoletta Katsouli, Michail Bariotakis, Evangelos Liapis, Anna Goetz, Michael Kallmayer, Josefine Reber, Alexander Novotny, Helmut Friess, Marc Ringelhan, Roland Schmid, Hans -Henning Eckstein, Susanna Hofmann, Vasilis Ntziachristos

Summary: This study investigates whether multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT) can detect and monitor hepatic steatosis by analyzing the spectral region around 930 nm. In a pilot study involving patients and mice, higher absorptions at 930 nm were observed in liver steatosis cases compared to healthy individuals, while no significant difference was observed in subcutaneous adipose tissue. This study suggests that MSOT has the potential to be a non-invasive and portable technique for detecting and monitoring hepatic steatosis in clinical settings, warranting further studies.

Baocheng Li, Ruochong Zhang, Renzhe Bi, Malini Olivo

Summary: Biosensing and bioimaging play a crucial role in understanding biological and pathological processes, and optical fiber has emerged as a promising technology in these fields. This review provides an overview of seven common types of optical fiber biosensors and optical fiber-based ultrasound detection in photoacoustic imaging (PAI), discussing their applications and potential in biosensing and bioimaging. Furthermore, the challenges and future directions in this area are briefly discussed.

Summary: In this study, a portable confocal Raman spectroscopy system with a simultaneous dual-wavelength source and a miniaturized handheld probe was developed. The system can acquire spectra in both fingerprint and high wavenumber regions simultaneously. An innovative design and a unique Raman spectra separation algorithm were implemented to improve the efficiency and accuracy of spectra acquisition.

Towards in vivo characterization of thyroid nodules suspicious for malignancy using multispectral optoacoustic tomography

Milou E. Noltes, Maximilian Bader, Madelon J. H. Metman, Jasper Vonk, Pieter J. Steinkamp, Jan Kukacka, Henriette E. Westerlaan, Rudi A. J. O. Dierckx, Bettien M. van Hemel, Adrienne H. Brouwers, Gooitzen M. van Dam, Dominik Juestel, Vasilis Ntziachristos, Schelto Kruijff

Summary: This study examines the potential of multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT) for risk stratification of thyroid nodules. The findings show a correlation between vascular patterns and thyroid malignancy, and identify malignant features in MSOT images that are verified by histopathology. However, mean oxygen saturation does not provide significant differences between benign and malignant thyroid nodules. Recommendations are made to consider optoacoustic features and chromophore quantification together for malignancy risk assessment.

Accounting for blood attenuation in intravascular near-infrared fluorescence-ultrasound imaging using a fluorophore-coated guidewire

Philipp Rauschendorfer, Georg Wissmeyer, Farouc A. Jaffer, Dimitris Gorpas, Vasilis Ntziachristos

Summary: This article introduces a new method for attenuation correction in intravascular near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging. It utilizes a fluorophore-coated guidewire as a reference to measure blood attenuation in real-time during the NIRF examination. The method has been shown to significantly improve signal quality and accuracy in animal experiments.

Engel, Jantje M. Gerdes, Paul T. Pfluger, Natalie Krahmer, Kerstin Stemmer

Summary: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from adipocytes transfer insulinotropic proteins to pancreatic β-cells, enhancing insulin secretion and glucose tolerance. This process is observed in insulin-resistant obese mice, suggesting that AdEVs play a role in informing β-cells about insulin resistance and increasing insulin demand.

Optoacoustic Endoscopy of the Gastrointestinal Tract

Hailong He, Ludwig Englert, Vasilis Ntziachristos

Summary: Optical endoscopy is widely used for gastrointestinal diagnostics, but it only allows superficial inspection of the mucosa. To visualize deeper layers, optoacoustic endoscopy has been developed, which combines optical contrast with ultrasound to provide high-resolution imaging. This review focuses on the progress, current status, and potential applications of optoacoustic endoscopy.

Angelos Karlas, Nikolina-Alexia Fasoula, Nikoletta Katsouli, Michael Kallmayer, Sabine Sieber, Sebastian Schmidt, Evangelos Liapis, Martin Halle, Hans-Henning Eckstein, Vasilis Ntziachristos

Summary: By using multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT), this study imaged hemodynamics and oxygen kinetics within skeletal muscle during exercise. The results showed changes in blood volume and oxygen levels during different types of hand-grip exercises in healthy volunteers. Further analysis revealed insights into arteriovenous oxygen differences and muscle oxygen consumption. These findings highlight the potential implications of MSOT in muscle research and disease diagnostics.
