This study evaluated the association between urinary cadmium (U-Cd) and blood Cd (B-Cd) and several biomarkers of renal dysfunction (alpha(1)-microglobulin [alpha(1)-MG], beta(2)-microglobulin [beta(2)-MG], N-acetyl-beta-d-glucosaminidase, metallothionein, retinol-binding protein and microalbumin [mALB]) and identified the biomarker(s) that was most closely correlated with U-Cd and B-Cd among female residents in rural areas of southwest China. U-Cd, creatinine (Cr), B-Cd and the above-mentioned six biomarkers in morning spot urine samples were measured from 288 randomly selected 40-75-year-old non-smoking women from non-polluted areas and Cd-polluted-areas. The lower 95% confidence limit of the benchmark dose (BMD) corresponding to the 5% (BMDL05) and 10% benchmark response (BMDL10) was calculated with assumed cut-off values of the 95th and 90th percentile. Among the investigated women, a significant positive association was found among mALB, beta(2)-MG and U-Cd as well as B-Cd. By using the cut-off value of the 95th percentile, the BMDL05/BMDL10 of U-Cd and B-Cd were 4.33/8.89 mu g/g Cr for mALB and 1.35/2.77 mu g/L for beta(2)-MG, respectively. The BMDL05/BMDL10 of U-Cd (B-Cd) was 2.73/5.60 mu g/g Cr (1.00/2.05 mu g/L) for mALB, if the cut-off value was set at the 90th percentile. Therefore, beta(2)-MG and mALB in urine were good biomarkers for long-term environmental Cd exposure assessment among the six biomarkers studied for the study pool in southwest China. Our findings may help us to understand the association between nephrotoxicity and Cd exposure, and aid in the decision-making of authorities for environmental Cd pollution and public health.

Analysis of Critical Speed for High-Speed Railway Pantograph-Catenary System

Yang Song, Fuchuan Duan, Zhigang Liu

Summary: This paper provides a theoretical explanation for the relationship between speed and interaction performance in the pantograph-catenary system. It is found that increasing speed can improve interaction performance in certain local speed regions. A validated model is used to reproduce this phenomenon, and a simple indicator is proposed to determine the local optimal speed based on the analysis of contact wire amplitude.

Long Chen, Fuchuan Duan, Yang Song, Zeyao Hu, Zhigang Liu

Summary: In this paper, a three-dimensional contact formulation for the pantograph-OCR system (POCRs) based on the Lagrange multiplier method is proposed. The contact forces can be accurately obtained without the need to determine the contact stiffness value. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed contact formulation are verified by comparing the simulation results with in-line measured data.

Static and Dynamic Analysis of Conductor Rail with Large Cross-Sectional Moment of Inertia in Rigid Catenary Systems

Xiaohe Feng, Shibin Gao, Yang Song, Zeyao Hu, Long Chen, Tao Liang

Summary: The study focuses on improving the dynamic interaction performance between the contact wire and the pantograph in tunnels. By developing new types of conductor rail with large moments of inertia, the sag of the contact wire is significantly reduced. Static and dynamic analyses show that the conductor rail with a large moment of inertia performs the best, reducing the sag by 28.37% and the stress by 27.76% compared to the conventional conductor. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that the contact force fluctuation is significantly reduced with the introduction of conductor rails with large moments of inertia, especially the conductor rail of case 1.

Study on Aerodynamic Instability and Galloping Response of Rail Overhead Contact Line Based on Wind Tunnel Tests

Fuchuan Duan, Yang Song, Shibin Gao, Yuhui Liu, Wenping Chu, Xiaobing Lu, Zhigang Liu

Summary: This paper investigates the aerodynamic instability of overhead contact lines (OCL) on electric railways under different wear levels and wind angles through wind tunnel tests and numerical simulations. It is found that the galloping amplitude of the contact line is large at wind attack angles of 8 degrees and 9 degrees for wear levels of 20% and 30%, respectively. The study also recommends the installation of damping droppers on railway OCLs to reduce the detrimental effects of galloping under strong wind fields.

Sensitivity Analysis and Optimisation of Key Parameters for Railway Rigid Overhead System and Pantograph

Ke Chen, Yang Song, Xiaobing Lu, Fuchuan Duan

Summary: This paper aims to improve the speed of rigid overhead systems by studying the impact of key parameters and the pantograph on the interaction performance. A rigid overhead system model is built using the finite element method, and a three-stage lumped mass pantograph model is used for the simulation. The sensitivity analysis reveals that span length, bending stiffness, linear density of the conductor rail, and masses of the pantograph head and upper frame are the most relevant variables for the contact force standard deviation. The optimization analysis shows a significant reduction in the contact force standard deviation at different speeds.

Dynamic Characteristics of Electric Shoegear and Conductor Rail System Considering the Track Irregularities

Xufan Wang, Zhigang Liu, Yang Song, Wei Jin, Zhao Xu, Jiaming Xiong, Sheng Zhou

Summary: The electric shoegear-conductor rail system is an important device for collecting electric energy in metro vehicles. This study aims to investigate the interaction performance between the shoegear and conductor rail by considering the disturbances from conductor rail irregularities and vehicle-track excitations. The results show that the maximum contact force exceeds the safety threshold at high speeds, and resonance caused by frequency match should be avoided. The analysis also reveals that the contact force standard deviation increases with track irregularities, leading to a potential safety issue.
