The effect of the introduction of a machined surface layer on grs,tio carbon steel on the low-cycle fatigue life was investigated. Variation of the mechanical properties of the surface layer did not affect the low-cycle fatigue life; however, variation of the surface morphology strongly affected the low-cycle fatigue life. Methods for predicting the low-cycle fatigue life of STS410 based on fracture mechanics were proposed, with the variation of the surface morphology modeled in terms of the initial crack length. The fatigue life predicted using the proposed model was shorter than that determined experimentally.
