Summary: A 77-year-old man underwent PCI with complications of CAP. Initially, the CAP was thought to have resolved, but seven months later, the patient developed progressive symptoms and was found to have increased pericardial effusion. Pericardiectomy was performed with successful recovery and stability three years later.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between ticagrelor platelet reactivity (PR) and clinical outcomes in ACS patients undergoing PCI. The results showed that PR measured by the VASP was not associated with bleeding or thrombotic events in this clinical setting. Therefore, PR measured by the VASP should not be used as a surrogate endpoint in studies on ticagrelor.

Summary: Early clinical outcomes following CAP, including cardiac tamponade and 30-day cardiovascular mortality, were significantly worse in patients with ACS compared to those with stable CAD. However, there was no significant difference in all-cause mortality between the two groups at the 3-year follow-up.

Summary: Rotational atherectomy (RA) is a procedure used in complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to remove calcified plaque, but it carries an increased risk of complications. Coronary perforation is a major complication of RA, which is usually identified and managed during the procedure. However, there are rare cases where delayed complications occur, leading to significant morbidity and mortality.

Summary: As the field of PCI advances, the importance of bleeding in treatment is increasingly recognized, being seen as having equally unfavorable prognostic implications as ischemic or thrombotic complications. Therefore, strategies focusing on maximizing treatment efficacy while minimizing safety concerns such as bleeding have become increasingly important.

Summary: Coronary angiography has been the standard for diagnosing coronary artery disease and guiding percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Intravascular imaging (IVI) technologies are used in conjunction with angiography to better assess plaque morphology and optimize PCI. IVI has utility in preintervention assessment, procedural guidance, and postintervention evaluation. IVI's role in reducing major adverse cardiac events in complex lesions is emerging, and further studies are underway. This paper provides an overview of available IVI technologies, reviews evidence supporting their use in PCI, and advocates for broader utilization.

Summary: This study compared the fracture risks associated with ticagrelor and clopidogrel in dual anti-platelet therapy (DAPT) among adults who underwent first-ever PCI for ACS. The results showed that ticagrelor use was associated with a lower risk of major osteoporotic fractures compared with clopidogrel use, supporting the use of ticagrelor in DAPT for better bone health.

Summary: Platelet function testing (PFT) has potential clinical applications in guiding individualized antithrombotic treatment for patients with atrial fibrillation. Summary: This study assessed the association between premature dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) discontinuation and the risk of thrombotic events. The study found that unplanned DAPT discontinuation was associated with an increased risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACEs), particularly within 3 months after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Summary: This study reports disease-specific cardiovascular causes of mortality among cancer patients in the USA between 1999 and 2019, considering temporal trends by age, sex, and cancer site. Ischaemic heart disease was the most common cardiovascular cause of death across all cancer types, followed by cerebrovascular disease and hypertensive diseases. Differential cardiovascular mortality risk was observed based on cancer site and demographics.

Summary: Little is known about the care outcomes and processes of patients with non-ST-segment myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) who have polyvascular disease. A study analyzed 287,279 NSTEMI patients and found that those with polyvascular disease had higher rates of major adverse cardiovascular events and in-hospital mortality. Patients without a history of vascular disease were less likely to receive statins or ACE inhibitors/ARBs, but more likely to receive dual antiplatelet therapy.

Summary: This study used data from the Health Survey for England waves 1997-2014 to analyze the relationship between age and prescription opioid use in different socioeconomic groups. The findings showed that the association between age and opioid use varies across income and education levels. Higher income and education were associated with a lower probability of reported opioid use. The highest probability of opioid use was observed in the 40-60 age group among those with lower income and education. Employment status did not significantly affect opioid use. Further research is needed to understand opioid use patterns in older people, especially those from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify and describe the use of locum doctors in NHS trusts in England from 2019 to 2021. The results showed significant variations in locum use among different trusts, with lower-rated and smaller trusts using locums more intensively. The study also highlighted a growing demand for locum doctors, as evidenced by the increasing number of unfilled shifts.

Summary: This study examines whether adults referred to the NHS Healthier You Diabetes Prevention Programme in England are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes mellitus. The findings show that people referred to the programme have a 20% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those who were not referred. These results support the rapid implementation of the programme in England and suggest its continuation and expansion to other parts of the United Kingdom.
