Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease associated with cognitive decline, loss of memory, and progressive cerebral atrophy. The trace element selenium (Se) is known to be involved in brain pathology. Selenoprotein P (SELENOP), as the main Se transport protein, is, to a great extent, responsible for maintaining Se homeostasis and the hierarchy of selenoprotein expression in the body. Adequate Se supply through SELENOP is vital for proper brain development and function. Additionally, SELENOP may be implicated in pathological processes in the central nervous system, including those in AD. The current review summarizes recent findings on the possible role of SELENOP in AD, with a focus on probable mechanisms: Se delivery to neurons, antioxidant activity, cytoskeleton assembly, interaction with redox-active metals (e.g., copper and iron), and misfolded proteins (amyloid beta and tau protein). The use of SELENOP as a biomarker of Se status is also briefly discussed. Epidemiological studies on Se supplementation are beyond the scope of the current review.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that glow discharge analysis is capable of effectively ionizing volatile organic compounds, enabling the analysis of VOCs in ambient air and gas mixtures. Direct determination of different classes of VOCs in ambient air using microsecond pulsed glow discharge time-of-flight mass spectrometry was demonstrated, with low fragmentation benefitting quantitative determination.

Summary: Novel dense and supported mixed matrix membranes based on biopolymer sodium alginate (SA) modified by Zr-MOFs were developed to enhance the pervaporation dehydration properties. The addition of UiO-66 into the membrane showed the best transport properties for dehydration of water/isopropanol mixtures, with significant improvements in permeation flux and water content in the permeate.

Modification Approaches to Enhance Dehydration Properties of Sodium Alginate-Based Pervaporation Membranes

Mariia Dmitrenko, Vladislav Liamin, Anna Kuzminova, Erkki Lahderanta, Nikolay Solovyev, Anastasia Penkova

Summary: Transport characteristics of sodium alginate membranes were improved by cross-linking with CaCl2 and modification with fullerenol and fullerene derivative with L-arginine for pervaporation dehydration. Various approaches, such as creating a thin selective layer and depositing nano-sized polyelectrolyte layers, were applied. The impact of different porous substrates and PEL combinations on membrane properties were studied, showing the best performance in a PAN-supported SA/fullerenol membrane with five PSS/SA bilayers.

Targeted proteomics for the analysis of cultural heritage: application of broadband collision-induced dissociation mass spectrometry

Yaroslav Dubrovskii, Timur Krivul'ko, Liudmila Gavrilenko, Nikolay Solovyev

Summary: A broadband collision-induced dissociation (bbCID) technique was proposed for mass spectrometric analysis of tryptic peptides obtained from paint coating samples. By combining with analytical chromatography, this technique maintains a balance between the quantity of data acquired and the sensitivity of the method. The study demonstrated that the required level of sensitivity can be achieved through the use of data-independent MS/MS strategy.

Summary: In this study, graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles were introduced into a poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) membrane to improve its pervaporation performance in the dehydration of ethylene glycol (EG). Through a series of experiments and tests, researchers successfully developed a PPO/GO composite membrane and found that the supported PPO/GO/MFFC membrane exhibited the best permeation properties in the dehydration of ethylene glycol.
