Offshore wind capacity has increased significantly over the past decade with 16 GW installed by the end of 2017. Offshore wind technologies present an effective tool for EU countries to address their renewable production targets, as extensive areas of high winds are available offshore. However, offshore wind is not yet cost competitive in European electricity markets, and frequently requires support schemes to finance extensive capital cost requirements. Therefore, capital cost reductions are critical to make offshore wind technologies competitive in the market. Here, a benchmark tool to analyze capital expenditure trends associated with offshore wind implementation in Europe up to 2020 is provided. A database of all existing farms was developed, detailing more than 21 GW of already commissioned or consented capacity, and trends were described using multiple linear regression models. Results indicate that following a consistent rise from 2000 to 2015, capital costs have since begun to decline. The impact of several farm parameters such as turbine capacity, average farm depth or farm location on the capital expenditures have been estimated.

Simulation of the Cyclic Stress-Strain Behavior of the Magnesium Alloy AZ31B-F under Multiaxial Loading

Vitor Anes, Rogerio Moreira, Luis Reis, Manuel Freitas

Summary: Under strain control tests and cyclic loading, extruded magnesium alloys exhibit a special mechanism of plastic deformation called twinning and de-twining. This behavior cannot be fully characterized with traditional numerical tools used for steels or aluminum alloys. To address this, a new phenomenological model called hypo-strain has been developed to accurately predict the cyclic stress-strain evolution of magnesium alloys. This study aims to describe the local cyclic elastic-plastic behavior of AZ31B-F magnesium alloy under multiaxial cyclic loading using Abaqus incremental plasticity with the implementation of the hypo-strain model in the UMAT subroutine of Abaqus/Standard.

Determination of the Relationship between Proportional and Non-Proportional Fatigue Damage in Magnesium Alloy AZ31 BF

Vitor Anes, Francisco Bumba, Luis Reis, Manuel Freitas

Summary: In this study, the multiaxial fatigue behavior of the magnesium alloy AZ31BF under proportional and non-proportional loads was investigated. Experimental tests were conducted according to the ASTM E466 protocol to determine the relationship between the fatigue strength of the alloy under these two loading types. The results showed that the fatigue strength of the AZ31BF alloy varies depending on the loading type. Parameter Y was introduced to represent the variation in non-proportional damage and can be used to enhance multiaxial fatigue models that currently overlook the distinction between these loading types.

Cracking failure analysis due to fatigue of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy coated with SiC layer and Cr interlayer deposited by magnetron sputtering

Alexandra A. Arbex, Luis Reis, Gisele F. C. Almeida, Abrao C. Merij, Marcos Massi, Antonio A. Couto

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the influence of coating a thin film of Silicon Carbide and chromium interlayer on the fatigue behavior and failure evaluation of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The characterization of the layer included roughness, thickness, and adhesion measurements. Uni-axial fatigue tests were conducted under R = 0.1, and SEM was used to observe and identify the fracture surfaces and failure mechanisms. Coated specimens using the DC source exhibited an increased number of cycles to failure, with crack initiation occurring internally rather than superficially. The layer remained adhered to the specimens even after the tests, indicating its effectiveness. In contrast, specimens coated using the HiPIMS source showed a decreased number of cycles to failure, predominantly superficial cracks, and reduced adhesion of the deposited film, proving to be ineffective and worsening the material's fatigue behavior.

Mechanical and corrosion performance of biodegradable iron porous structures

M. C. Salama, F. Alves, L. Reis, A. M. Deus, M. B. Silva, C. Santos, M. J. Carmezim, M. F. Vaz

Summary: Biodegradable metals, particularly iron, have potential as temporary bone implants, but have drawbacks such as high stiffness and low degradation rate. The use of porous materials can overcome these disadvantages by decreasing strength and increasing degradation rate. This study aimed to develop iron porous structures with adequate mechanical and corrosion performance. Three types of structures were studied, and results showed that both mechanical and corrosion properties depended on relative density and pore arrangement. Structures with low relative density exhibited similar compressive strength to human trabecular bone and degradation rates suitable for bone substitutes.
