Summary: This study examined the association between diabetes stigma and HbA1c, treatment plan, and acute and chronic complications in adolescents and young adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The results showed that diabetes stigma was associated with clinical factors and had an impact on acute and chronic complications in these patients. Therefore, addressing diabetes stigma is important in providing comprehensive diabetes care.

Summary: Despite the popularity of mental health-related smartphone apps, weak user engagement has hindered their impact on the mental health landscape. Integrating these apps into traditional therapeutic models seems to improve clinical outcomes, but questions remain about the relationship between app engagement and the coach or clinician. This study examines patient app engagement patterns and clinical outcomes from a digital clinic pilot, finding that app engagement does not correlate with outcomes but satisfaction with app and clinician/coach engagement does have an impact.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the relationship between advanced carbohydrate counting (ACC) and glycemic control and empowerment in adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes. The study found that a higher level of empowerment was associated with lower HbA1c levels, indicating the importance of patient empowerment in achieving optimal glycemic outcomes. No associations were found between ACC and empowerment or glycemic outcomes.

Summary: This study aims to identify psychosocial factors that predict healthcare usage in young adults with youth-onset type 2 diabetes. The results show that beliefs about medication necessity and concerns, diabetes impact on psychosocial well-being, and self-management support predict the need for diabetes home and routine care visits.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of an online guided self-determination (GSD) program for improving diabetes self-management skills in young adults with type 1 diabetes. A two-phase study was conducted, including a training program for diabetes educators (DEs) and the participation of young adults in the program. Results showed that the online GSD program was acceptable, feasible, and effective in improving autonomous motivation and communication with DEs. The program had a significant impact on diabetes self-management and provided a person-centered approach.

Summary: Missed cases of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) within adult psychiatry services have attracted increasing attention. This study found that almost two thirds of first-time attenders at an adult psychiatry clinic met criteria for ADHD or ASD. Most of the patients with NDD had not been diagnosed in childhood. The results underscore the importance of screening for NDD in adult psychiatric services.

Summary: Young adult cancer survivors experience psychosocial distress and have unmet needs. They often report depressive symptoms, anxiety, fear of progression, and increased psychosocial stressors. Their quality of life is lower than the general population and they have poorer outcomes. Employment is associated with lower levels of psychosocial distress, anxiety, fatigue, and better quality of life. Further longitudinal studies are needed to confirm these findings, and psycho-oncological and social support should be integrated into the aftercare of young adult cancer survivors.

Summary: Previous research on discrimination and health has mainly focused on comparing different individuals' levels of discrimination, while within-person variations and acute changes in exposure to discrimination have received little attention. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between an individual's average level of exposure to discrimination and weekly fluctuations in exposure to discrimination, and how race-related coping and skin tone may moderate these associations.

Summary: This study used a visual methodology to explore the relationship between Latinx caregivers' understanding of their children's diet preferences and oral health. Findings showed that active participation in the research empowered parents to identify strategies that could directly impact their child's oral health outcomes. The use of visual research methodologies is important in understanding the lived experience of underrepresented populations like Latinx children with and without ASD and their families.

Summary: This study found that acute fluctuations in glucose levels adversely affect the functioning of adults with type 1 diabetes. Overnight glucose variability and time spent in high glucose levels were linked to poorer next-day functioning. These findings emphasize the wide-ranging impact of glucose fluctuations on functional outcomes in individuals with type 1 diabetes.

Summary: This commentary article focuses on the advantages of using telemedicine for shared medical appointments in individuals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Through a review of literature, 43 articles pertaining to shared medical appointments or group medical visits in diabetes patients were identified. The use of this approach has shown positive outcomes in both adults and children with type 1 diabetes. Shared telemedicine appointments also have the potential to enhance diabetes self-management, reduce treatment burden, and improve psychosocial outcomes in adults with type 2 diabetes. Ten key recommendations for implementation are provided to guide the development of shared telemedicine appointments for diabetes, aiming to improve care in diabetic patients.
