Summary: This study investigated the associations of free testosterone, total testosterone, and SHBG with prostate cancer. The results demonstrated that free testosterone was associated with prostate cancer, but total testosterone was not. Additionally, the age at blood collection may influence the associations between testosterone and prostate cancer.

Summary: This study found a wide J-shaped association between body mass index (BMI) and esophageal cancer (OC) mortality among Asians, with underweight and extreme obesity increasing the risk of OC mortality. Additionally, smoking and alcohol consumption synergistically increased the OC mortality risk in underweight individuals.

Age effects on radiation response: summary of a recent symposium and future perspectives

Mark P. Little, Alina Brenner, Eric J. Grant, Hiromi Sugiyama, Dale L. Preston, Ritsu Sakata, John Cologne, Raquel Velazquez-Kronen, Mai Utada, Kiyohiko Mabuchi, Kotaro Ozasa, John D. Olson, Gregory O. Dugan, Simonetta Pazzaglia, J. Mark Cline, Kimberly E. Applegate

Summary: One of the uncertainties in estimating population risk of late effects from epidemiological data is the lack of long-term follow-up studies on radiation-exposed cohorts. Children are generally found to be at higher risk of cancer induction compared to adults for the same radiation dose, but the evidence varies by cancer site. For solid cancers, the excess relative risk tends to decrease with increasing age at exposure. However, there are variations in the degree of risk variation with exposure age for different endpoints.

Comparison of All Solid Cancer Mortality and Incidence Dose-Response in the Life Span Study of Atomic Bomb Survivors, 1958-2009

Summary: Recent analysis of all solid cancer incidence and mortality in the LSS showed an upward curvature in the radiation dose response among males but not females. The findings suggest that the upward curvature is not specific to males or incidence data, and may depend on the composition of cancer sites, age at exposure, or time.

Identification of Risk Factors for Coronary Artery Disease in Asymptomatic Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Summary: Among asymptomatic patients with type 2 diabetes, current smoking, Agatston score >= 100, and insulin treatment are independent predictive factors for high-risk coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. Non-invasive examinations, except for the Agatston score, are not independent predictors of high-risk CAD patients.

Summary: This study analyzed data from 16 prospective studies in Asia and found that marital status is associated with total and cause-specific mortality, with unmarried individuals having a higher risk of death.

Relationship Between Risk of Hyper-Low-density Lipoprotein Cholesterolemia and Evacuation After the Great East Japan Earthquake

Summary: This study found that prolonged evacuation after the Fukushima nuclear disaster is a risk factor for the new onset of hyper-LDL cholesterolemia, leading to an increase in cardiovascular disease. It is important to follow up with evacuees and recommend necessary lifestyle changes.

Summary: This study aimed to examine objectively measured halitosis levels based on the reasons individuals are concerned about halitosis. The results showed that individuals whose halitosis was pointed out by others had higher objectively measured halitosis levels, while those concerned about the attitudes of others or perceived their own halitosis had lower objectively measured halitosis levels.

The Effect of Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test on Radiation Risk Estimate for Prostate Cancer Incidence among Atomic-Bomb Survivors

Mai Utada, Alina V. Brenner, Dale L. Preston, Michiko Yamada, Eric J. Grant, Hiromi Sugiyama, Ritsu Sakata, Elizabeth K. Cahoon, Kotaro Ozasa, Kiyohiko Mabuchi

Summary: In this study, the radiation-related risk for prostate cancer incidence rates in the Life Span Study cohort was re-evaluated, taking into account the baseline cancer incidence rates among different subsets of the cohort. The results showed that PSA testing among participants increased the baseline incidence rates but did not impact the radiation risk estimate. This study confirms the previously reported dose-response relationship for prostate cancer incidence in the cohort.

Summary: To achieve long-term management of diabetes, patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus need high treatment adherence, which is associated with treatment satisfaction and quality of life. Patient education about diabetes self-management is essential. This study investigates the improvement of quality of life and post-discharge glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus through a diabetes education program.

Difficulties in Accessing Medication Records at the Time of a Large-Scale Disaster

Fumihiko Ueno, Keiko Murakami, Masato Nagai, Hiroko Matsubara, Tomomi Oonuma, Fumiko Matsuzaki, Aoi Noda, Mami Ishikuro, Taku Obara, Shinichi Kuriyama

Summary: In a large-scale disaster, it is important for medical professionals to have access to medication records and provide medicines to those who cannot access their daily medication. However, this study found that a limited number of people carry their medication records and have constant access to their medication information. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct awareness campaigns promoting the use of paper notebooks and medication record applications.
