This article explores farmers' use of computers for farm business purposes by analyzing the computer access and usage decisions of almost 900 Irish farmers. The findings reveal that computer ownership is influenced by a combination of farm business and household characteristics, but that farm business characteristics dominate if the computer is used for the business. More detailed findings suggest that computers are most likely to be used on larger dairy farms, while farmers who are living alone have limited access to computers. Public policy needs to support the adoption of information technologies, and the role of computers in tackling social isolation and providing farm information is critically discussed.

Economic analysis of biosecurity adoption in dairy farming: evidence from Ireland

Osayanmon W. Osawe, Doris Lapple, John F. Mee

Summary: Given the significant negative impact of livestock disease outbreaks on animal and public health, preventing disease spread through biosecurity practices is important. This study assessed the economic implications of adopting biosecurity practices on Irish dairy farms. The results showed that vaccination and testing bulk tank milk for diseases were significantly associated with better economic outcomes, while not pooling colostrum did not show a significant association. These findings have important policy implications for promoting the adoption of biosecurity practices among livestock farmers globally.

Extension and management pathways for enhanced farm sustainability: evidence from Irish dairy farms

Summary: This study examines the relationship between farmers' extension participation, the adoption of recommended farm management practices, and economic and environmental sustainability. Using an unbalanced panel dataset of dairy farms from 2010 to 2019, we analyze the efficiency-based Irish hybrid extension program. Our findings suggest that extension participation has a limited association with the adoption of recommended practices and does not directly contribute to sustainability outcomes. These results have important implications for extension programs focusing on economic and environmental outcomes.
