Improving salt tolerance of genotypes requires a source of genetic variation and multiple accurate selection criteria for discriminating their salt tolerance. A combination of morpho-physiological and biochemical parameters and multivariate analysis was used to detect salt tolerance variation in 15 wheat lines developed by doubled haploid (DHL) technique. They were then compared with the salt-tolerant check cultivar Sakha 93. Salinity stress was investigated at three salinity levels (0, 100, and 200 mM NaCl) for 25 days. Considerable genetic variation was observed for all traits, as was high heritability (>60%) and genetic gain (>20%). Principal component analysis indicated the ability of nine traits (root number, root length, root dry weight, shoot length, shoot dry weight, specific root length, relative water content, membrane stability index, and catalase) to identify differences in salinity tolerance among lines. Three traits (shoot length, shoot dry weight, and catalase) were indicative of salt-tolerance, indicating their importance in improving and evaluating salt tolerant genotypes for breeding programs. The salinity tolerance membership index based on these three traits classified one new line (DHL21) and the check cultivar (Sakha 93) as highly salt-tolerant, DHL25, DHL26, DHL2, DHL11, and DHL5 as tolerant, and DHL23 and DHL12 as intermediate. Discriminant function analysis and MANOVA suggested differences among the five groups of tolerance. Among the donor genotypes, Sakha 93 remained the donor of choice for improving salinity tolerance during the seedling stage. The tolerated lines (DHL21, DHL25, DHL26, DHL2, DHL11, and DHL5) could be also recommended as useful and novel genetic resources for improving salinity tolerance of wheat in breeding programs.

Summary: Plant hybridization is essential for breeding new varieties with desired traits. This study aimed to evaluate gene action, heritability, and heterosis of various traits in rice under water deficit conditions. Crossing four different water-deficit tolerant rice genotypes produced populations with improved performances and adaptability to water deficit condition. The study also identified different types of gene interactions influencing the inheritance of specific traits. The findings provide valuable insights for future phenotypic and genotypic association studies in rice and for developing water deficit tolerant rice cultivars.

Detection of High-Performance Wheat Genotypes and Genetic Stability to Determine Complex Interplay between Genotypes and Environments

Summary: Abiotic stress reduces crop production worldwide. To recommend suitable genotypes for cultivation under water deficit and heat stress conditions, understanding the genetic basis and plant responses to these stresses and their interactions with the environment is crucial. In this study, the MGIDI index was used to identify abiotic-stress-tolerant wheat genotypes, while the WAASB and WAASBY indices were used to recognize high-yielding and stable genotypes. Twenty wheat genotypes were evaluated for their abiotic stress tolerance under various test conditions, and certain genotypes showed slight reductions in measured traits compared to the control group. The genotypes G12 and G17 were found to be the most stable candidates based on different indices, indicating their potential for improving productivity and stabilizing grain yield under optimal, water deficit, and heat stress conditions.

Nano-Hydroxyapatite and ZnO-NPs Mitigate Pb Stress in Maize

Bushra Ahmed Alhammad, Awais Ahmad, Mahmoud F. F. Seleiman

Summary: Heavy metal stress, particularly lead stress, negatively affects the growth, physiology, and yield of plants. However, the combined application of zinc oxide nanoparticles (50 mg L-1) and nano-hydroxyapatite (50 mg kg(-1)) can alleviate the adverse effects of lead stress and improve the growth and yield of maize. The combined treatment also enhanced the uptake of nutrients and reduced the uptake of lead in plants.

Summary: The present study aimed to explore the influence of exogenously sprayed moringa seed extract and α-tocopherol on physio-biochemical, morphological, and yield attributes of six diverse maize hybrids under three irrigation levels in poor-fertility sandy soil. The results showed that foliar application of moringa seed extract or α-tocopherol enhanced maize tolerance to drought stress by increasing the accumulation of osmoprotectants, improving antioxidant enzymes, and reducing membrane lipid peroxidation and electrolyte leakage, resulting in improved yield traits and crop water productivity under water deficit conditions.

Summary: In Saudi Arabia, the concentration of Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) and human adenovirus (HAdV) in wastewater treatment plants was measured. PMMoV was found in 94% of wastewater samples with concentrations ranging from 62 to 3.5 x 10(7) genome copies/l, while HAdV was detected in 75% of raw water samples with concentrations ranging from 1.29 x 10(3) GC/L to 1.26 x 10(7) GC/L. A higher positive correlation between PMMoV and HAdV concentrations was observed at one of the treatment plants.
