The athletic abilities of the horse serve as a valuable model to understand the physiology and molecular mechanisms of adaptive responses to exercise. We analyzed differentially expressed genes in triceps brachii muscle tissues collected from Eonjena Taeyang and Jigusang Seryeok Thoroughbred horses and their co-expression networks in a large-scale RNA-sequence dataset comparing expression before and after exercise. High-quality horse transcriptome data were generated, with over 22 million 90-bp pair-end reads. By comparing the annotations, we found that MYH3, MPZ, and PDE8B genes in Eonjena Taeyang and PDE8B and KIF18A genes in Jigusang Seryeok were upregulated before exercise. Notably further, we observed that PPP1R27, NDUFA3, TNC, and ANK1 in Eonjena Taeyang and HIF1A, BDNF, ADRB2, OBSCN, and PER3 in Jigusang Seryeok have shown upregulation at the postexercise period. This investigation suggested that genes responsible for metabolism and oxidative phosphorylations associated with endurance and resistance exercise were highly expressed, whereas genes encoding structural proteins were generally suppressed. The expression profile of racehorses at pre- and postexercise will provide credible reference for further studies on biological effects such as responses to stress and adaption of other Thoroughbred horse, which might be useful for selective breeding for improvement of traits in commercial production.

Inhibitory effects of Ganoderma lucidum spore oil on rheumatoid arthritis in a collagen-induced arthritis mouse model

Yunji Heo, Mangeun Kim, Godagama Gamaarachchige Dinesh Suminda, Yunhui Min, Yaping Zhao, Mrinmoy Ghosh, Young-Ok Son

Summary: Holistic healthcare practitioners are exploring the use of Ganoderma lucidum (GL) mushroom, which has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A study found that GL spores (GLS) oil, rich in oleic and linoleic acids, significantly reduced clinical scores and inflammation in a RA mouse model. GLS oil also suppressed neutrophil infiltration and IL-6 expression, suggesting its potential use in the development of RA drugs. However, further clinical research is needed to support these findings.

Paramjeet Sharma, Neelesh Sharma, Shanti Choudhary, Priyanka Luhach, Ratan K. Choudhary

Summary: The utility of animal stem cells extends to enhancing milk, meat, and fiber production as well as serving as animal models for human diseases. Stem cells play important roles in tissue development, growth, repair, and regenerative therapy. Goat embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells, mammary stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, spermatogonial stem cells, and others have great potential in both increasing goat production potential and serving as a model for studying human diseases. This review provides an overview of research on caprine stem cells and highlights their potential applications in caprine regenerative medicine and as a model animal for understanding human diseases.

Application of Plant Proteases in Meat Tenderization: Recent Trends and Future Prospects

Syahira Izyana Mohd Azmi, Pavan Kumar, Neelesh Sharma, Awis Qurni Sazili, Sung-Jin Lee, Mohammad Rashedi Ismail-Fitry

Summary: Papain, bromelain, and ficin are commonly used plant proteases for meat tenderization. Other plant proteases, such as actinidin, zingibain, and cucumin, have also been explored. The use of plant crude extracts or powders with higher levels of compounds that have tenderizing effects is gaining popularity due to their lower cost and additional benefits, such as antioxidants and antimicrobial effects.

Melatonin or vitamin C attenuates lead acetate-induced testicular oxidative and inflammatory damage in mice by inhibiting oxidative stress mediated NF-κB signaling

Ze-Min Zhao, Su Mei, Qi-Yue Zheng, Jiao Wang, Yi-Ru Yin, Jiao-Jiao Zhang, Xian-Zhong Wang

Summary: This study shows that lead acetate exposure can impair reproductive function in male mice, including reducing sperm quality and inducing inflammatory damage. Oxidative stress and inflammatory response are key mechanisms underlying these adverse effects of lead acetate. Melatonin and vitamin C can serve as effective measures to counteract the toxic effects of lead acetate.

Pavan Kumar, Neelesh Sharma, Lokesh Kumar Narnoliya, Akhilesh Kumar Verma, Nitin Mehta, Prakrutik Prafulchandra Bhavsar, Arvind Kumar, Sun-Jin Lee, Awis Qurni Sazili

Summary: In-vitro meat production is transitioning from the conceptual-laboratory phase to pilot-commercial scale production. The main challenge lies in the high cost, mainly due to expensive cell culture media, growth regulators, and skilled manpower. The development of serum-free and animal-free culture media using recombinant technology and media recycling is crucial for scaling up production and reducing costs. Researchers are currently focusing on designing specific bioreactors, automating processes, utilizing natural and edible scaffolds, and co-culturing different cells to mimic conventional meat. However, limited availability of industry protocols hinders further research.

The Regulatory Mechanism of Cold Plasma in Relation to Cell Activity and Its Application in Biomedical and Animal Husbandry Practices

Yijiao Wu, Shiyu Yu, Xiyin Zhang, Xianzhong Wang, Jiaojiao Zhang

Summary: Cold plasma, as an innovative technology, has a wide range of applications in oral treatment, tissue regeneration, wound healing, and cancer therapy. It regulates cell activity through the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), promoting proliferation in skin-related cells and angiogenesis for wound healing but inhibiting cell proliferation in high levels. Cold plasma also has potential applications in animal husbandry, such as improving chicken growth and reproductive capacity and killing microorganisms on animal food surfaces. However, the molecular mechanism of cold plasma on cell activity and its applications in animal husbandry require further research.
