It is of great significance both in theory and in practice to propose an efficient approach to approximating visual walkability given urban residents' growing leisure needs. Recent advancements in sensing and computing technologies provide new opportunities in this regard. This paper first proposes a conceptual framework for understanding street visual walkability and then employs deep learning technologies to segment and extract physical features from Baidu Map Street View (BMSV) imagery using the case of Shenzhen City in China. Guided by this framework, four indicators are calculated based on the segmented imagery and further integrated into the visual walkability index (VWI), whose reliability is validated through manual interpretation and a subjective scoring experiment. Our results show that deep learning technologies achieve higher accuracy in segmenting street view imagery than the traditional K-means clustering algorithm and support vector machine algorithm. Moreover, the developed VWI is effective to measure visual walkability, and it presents great heterogeneity across streets within Shenzhen. Spatial regression further identifies that significant social inequalities are associated with neighborhood visual walkability. According to the findings, implications and suggestions on planning the healthy city are proposed. The methodological procedure is reduplicative and can be applied to other unfeasible or challenging cases.

Growing rights consciousness of the marginalised and the reshuffling of the landlord-tenant power relationship: Examining a country park-induced displacement in Shanghai

Jin Zhu, Shenjing He, Jinwei Hao

Summary: This study explores the active defense of rights by migrant tenants and how factors like social capital, stigmatization, and exclusion from planning strengthened their rights consciousness, affecting power dynamics with landlords. Landlords and government collaborated through attractive compensation packages to displace migrants, leading to the loss of social support in migrant enclaves and hindering their upward mobility.

Joint Multi-User Decoding for Polar-Coded Uplink Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Systems

Shujing He, Qi Zhang, Jiayin Qin

Summary: Polar-coded non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a competitive option for future wireless physical layer access techniques. The conventional NOMA system using successive interference cancellation (SIC) for signal decoding is optimal only when the code length is sufficiently long. In this paper, a joint multi-user successive cancellation decoding algorithm is proposed for the polar-coded uplink NOMA system to address channel fluctuations, and simulation results demonstrate its robustness.

Unraveling urban food availability dynamics and associated social inequalities: Towards a sustainable food environment in a developing context

Lingqi Wang, Shenjing He, Chong Zhao, Shiliang Su, Min Weng, Guie Li

Summary: The essential role of food environment in achieving urban sustainability has been widely recognized worldwide. However, there is limited understanding on how urban food availability and associated social inequalities change over time, particularly in the developing world. This study analyzes the food availability dynamics in Hangzhou metropolitan in China from 2016 to 2018 and finds that while overall temporal changes are not significant, there is prominent and lasting spatial heterogeneity in food environment. Social inequalities in food availability persist but show a declining trend during the research period, and socioeconomic status has a significant impact on food availability at both community and sub-district levels. The findings of this study provide insights for creating sustainable food environments in developing metropolitan areas and contribute to the research on urban sustainable food environment in non-western contexts.

The rise of education-featured gated communities in Chinese cities: (Re)producing the enterprising self via the entrepreneurial local state-capital nexus

Shenjing He

Summary: This study examines the rise of education-featured gated communities (edu-featured GCs) in Chinese cities and explores the role of the entrepreneurial local state and individual choices in shaping these communities. The study shows that the entrepreneurial state forms a strategic alliance with private capital to create different types of edu-featured GCs. Meanwhile, individuals are responsibilized to produce a competitive labor force, leading to the reproduction of the enterprising self. However, middle-class households are trapped in a cycle of hypercompetition despite their investment in education and housing markets.

Policy-driven education-led gentrification and its spatiotemporal dynamics: Evidence from Shanghai, China

Rong Cai, Lirong Hu, Shenjing He

Summary: Quality schools have a strong influence on the housing market and social life. While there is extensive research on the link between school choice and housing dynamics in developed economies, little is known about this relationship in developing contexts, including China. This study examines the process of gentrification driven by access to educational resources in Shanghai using a longitudinal housing transaction dataset. The findings reveal uneven spatial and temporal evolution of education-led gentrification, highlighting the role of policy in shaping these dynamics.

From campaign-style governance to multiple environmentalities: urban political ecologies of e-waste regulation in Guiyu, China

Kun Wang, Junxi Qian, Shenjing He

Summary: Recent research in urban political ecology (UPE) focuses on urban environmentality and sheds light on the emergence of non-coercive and diffused forms of power that shape environmental subjects. Meanwhile, studies on urban environmental politics in the Global South examine the role of sovereign power in governing socio-ecological changes. This paper bridges the gap between sovereign and non-sovereign governance by exploring the concept of multiple environmentalities. Through a case study of Guiyu Town, China, a polluted e-waste processing hub, this study highlights the relevance of the multiple environmentalities paradigm to UPE and suggests the need for situated theories in the urban South.

Summary: This study examines the impact of land cover, vegetation health, climatic forcings, elevation heat loads, and terrain characteristics on land surface temperature distribution over West Africa. The random forest model performs the best in downscaling predictands. The southern regions consistently exhibit healthy vegetation, while areas with unhealthy vegetation coincide with hot land surface temperature clusters. Positive Normalized Difference Vegetation Index trends in the Sahel highlight rainfall recovery and subsequent greening. Southwest winds cause the upwelling of cold waters, resulting in low land surface temperatures in southern West Africa. Considering LVCET factors is crucial for prioritizing greening initiatives and urban planning.

Summary: This study analyzes the structure, function, operation, and failure characteristics of district heating networks (DHNs) and proposes vulnerability analysis methods. The effectiveness of these methods is validated through application to a DHN in a Chinese city. The study finds that the heat source connectivity efficiency loss rate effectively characterizes topological and functional vulnerability. It also reveals that controllable DHNs have higher functional vulnerability under large area failure scenarios.
