Oxidative Balance Scores (OBSs) are tools that have emerged to evaluate the global balance of individuals' oxidationreduction status. The aim was to compare OBSs available in the literature regarding their characteristics and associations with chronic diseases in epidemiological studies. Studies that developed OBSs were searched in PubMed until August 2018. A total of 21 OBSs were identified. These OBSs presented different scoring schemes and different types of anti- and pro-oxidant components, including dietary factors (dietary intake and/or nutrient biomarkers), lifestyle factors, and medications. Most OBSs were based on over 10 components, and some included only dietary factors. Few considered weighted components in the score. Only three OBSs were validated as potential surrogates of oxidative balance through inflammation and OS-related biomarkers. Notably, all the OBSs were associatedto a varying degreewith a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, colorectal adenomas, and different cancer types (colorectal and breast cancer), as well as with all-cause and cancer-related mortality. For other outcomes, e.g., prostate cancer, contradictory results were reported. In summary, there is a great heterogeneity in the definition of OBSs. Most studies are concordant in supporting that excessive OS reflected by a lower OBS has deleterious effects on health. Unified criteria for defining the proper OBSs, valuable to gauge OS-related aspects of the diet and lifestyle that may lead to adverse health outcomes, are needed.

Individual and family predictors of ultra-processed food consumption in Spanish children: The SENDO project

Lorena Garcia-Blanco, Victor de la O. Pascual, Arantxa Berasaluce, Laura Moreno-Galarraga, Miguel Angel Martinez-Gonzalez, Nerea Martin-Calvo

Summary: This study identifies individual and family factors predicting ultra-processed food consumption in Spanish children. Large family size and longer exposure to screens were associated with higher consumption, while better knowledge of children's dietary recommendations, healthy dietary attitudes, and longer breastfeeding were associated with lower consumption. These factors accounted for approximately 16% of the variability in childhood ultra-processed food consumption.

Summary: This study examined the association between adherence to an energy-restricted Mediterranean diet and the amount of CO2 emissions in an older adult population. The findings suggest that the Mediterranean diet can contribute to lower total dietary CO2 emissions, indicating its potential environmental benefits.

Predictors of total mortality and their differential association on premature or late mortality in the SUN cohort

Maria Barberia-Latasa, Miguel A. Martinez-Gonzalez, Carmen de la Fuente-Arrillaga, Maira Bes-Rastrollo, Silvia Carlos, Alfredo Gea

Summary: Several studies have analyzed the association between all-cause mortality and various risk factors, particularly modifiable ones like smoking, diet, and exercise, for the purpose of developing public health preventive strategies. However, specific analysis of predictors for premature and late mortality is necessary to provide more accurate recommendations. This study followed a cohort of 20,272 university graduates with a wide age range for a median of 12 years. The results showed that physical activity was the strongest independent predictor of mortality at any age, associated with reduced risk of total, premature, and late mortality.

Circulating Amino Acids and Risk of Peripheral Artery Disease in the PREDIMED Trial

Summary: The study examines the associations between baseline levels of plasma amino acids and subsequent risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD). It also investigates the potential modifying effect of a nutritional intervention with the Mediterranean diet. The findings suggest that certain amino acids and their pathways may serve as biomarkers for PAD risk, and the Mediterranean diet supplemented with olive oil offers a protective effect against PAD.

The results showed that phytate intake was positively associated with BMD in Mediterranean postmenopausal women, indicating a potential protective effect on bone. However, further large-scale, long-term, and randomized prospective clinical studies are needed to assess the potential benefits of phytate consumption on BMD in postmenopausal women.

Breastfeeding Is Associated with Higher Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet in a Spanish Population of Preschoolers: The SENDO Project

Asier Oliver Olid, Laura Moreno-Galarraga, Jose Manuel Moreno-Villares, Maria del Mar Bibiloni, Miguel Angel Martinez-Gonzalez, Victor de la O, Alejandro Fernandez-Montero, Nerea Martin-Calvo

Summary: Breastfeeding for 6 months or longer is associated with a higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet during the preschool years. Children who were breastfed for at least 6 months had a one-point increase in their mean KIDMED score compared to children who were never breastfed. The odds ratio of high adherence to the MedDiet was also higher in children who were breastfed for at least 6 months.

L. Gayoso, L. Goni, V. de la O, J. Domper, C. Razquin, M. Ruiz-Canela, U. Etxeberria

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the effect of a culinary intervention on health parameters and dietary habits among patients with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). The results showed that the patients who received the culinary intervention had significant improvements in blood glucose, cholesterol levels, and weight compared to those in the control group. These findings suggest that a culinary intervention based on the Mediterranean Diet is a promising approach for promoting healthy dietary habits in T2D patients.
