In recent decades, the debate on how to implement and measure sustainability in food production gained increasing importance and interest for agriculture. In the wine sector, producers are increasingly pursuing sustainable practices, including measures for water preservation from degradation and overuse. But methodologies for assessing and communicating the impacts on water resources need to be understood in detail to guide the selection of the most appropriate management practices, support environmental labelling and promote environmental-friendly products to consumers. This work focuses on the impacts on water resources associated with the production of Italian wine by comparing two methodologies: the Water-focused Life Cycle Assessment and the Water indicator included in the Italian VIVA certification framework, which is based on the Water Footprint Assessment. The two methodologies address the impact on freshwater consumption and degradation from a life cycle perspective. VIVA is based on a water balance method that reflects a volumetric measure of water consumption, while the LCA-based approach investigates both the freshwater consumption and depletion using different impact indicators. The study goal is to compare the two methodologies to understand how their outcomes can support and improve the management of water-related issues in wine production. One main conclusion is that the WATER indicator within VIVA framework can provide more precise recommendations for the optimal management of water use during the vineyard phase, while LCA approach highlights impact hotspots related to both direct and indirect use of water resources (e.g., it points out the relevant contribution of the bottling stage to different impact indicators). The comparative application of both methodologies can provide useful insights into the water-related impacts of different wine production processes and stages and support a comprehensive assessment of the best management practices, unless the differences in the methodological approaches and goals are well understood by assessors. Grassland ecosystems resilience to drought: The role of surface water ponds

Lin Chen, Giulia Sofia, Junliang Qiu, Jian Wang, Paolo Tarolli

Summary: Currently, grassland ecosystems face challenges from climate variability and increased extreme droughts. Ponds in grasslands can play a key role in mitigating climate change pressure and improving grassland resilience. However, their conservation is hindered by difficulties in auditing these small and dynamic features. Understanding the dynamics of pond-grassland interactions with climate change is a priority for assessing future impacts on managed-land systems.

Two-stage drying of tomato based on physical parameter kinetics: operative and qualitative optimization

Alessio Mencarelli, Francesco Marinello, Alberto Marini, Lorenzo Guerrini

Summary: Hot air drying is a common method for industrial tomato drying, but it has issues with time, energy consumption, and product quality. This study aimed to improve drying by monitoring the tomato's physical characteristics. The kinetics of moisture, color, volume, and rehydration ratio were modeled at different temperatures. Low temperatures resulted in minimal changes in physical characteristics but longer drying times (+189%), while high temperatures led to faster drying but increased tomato browning (+200%). A two-stage process using two temperatures was developed to reduce drying time without affecting product quality.

Landform-driven human reliance on rivers in imperial China

Wenfang Cao, Junguo Liu, Serena Ceola, Ganquan Mao, Mark G. Macklin, Alberto Montanari, Philippe Ciais, Yuanzhi Yao, Paolo Tarolli

Summary: This study reveals the relationship between human settlements and rivers and landforms in China's history. The results show that people in lowland areas have less reliance on rivers, possibly due to higher flood risks, and they rely more on alluvial aquifers distant from rivers for agriculture. Conversely, people in mountainous areas have a stronger reliance on rivers. These findings have important implications for sustainable lifeways in riverine environments.

Modeling windthrow effects on water runoff and hillslope stability in a mountain catchment affected by the VAIA storm

Luca Mauri, Paolo Tarolli

Summary: Windthrows have significant impacts on forest landscapes, affecting hydrological and geomorphological processes. Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) topographic data provides an opportunity to investigate physical processes at the catchment scale. This study examines the interaction between windthrows, runoff alterations, and hillslope failures in a landslide-prone mountain catchment in northern Italy, using hydrological and geomorphological models. Results show that windstorms play a key role in altering local runoff and promoting shallow landslides. It also demonstrates the potential of ALS data for predicting terrain instabilities and guiding interventions in wind-disturbed forest areas.

Improving the Spatial Accuracy of UAV Platforms Using Direct Georeferencing Methods: An Application for Steep Slopes

Mustafa Zeybek, Selim Taskaya, Ismail Elkhrachy, Paolo Tarolli

Summary: This study focuses on using image-based techniques such as structure from motion (SfM) to produce high-accuracy topographic maps using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and minimal surface measurements. Real-time kinematic (RTK) has been used to increase positional accuracy to 1-3 times the ground sampling distance (GSD). The study evaluates the post-processing kinematic (PPK) approach for achieving high positional accuracy with UAV image georeferencing and assesses the impact of different flight patterns and altitudes on the accuracy of the resulting topographic maps.

Summary: Headland and field edges have higher traffic frequency, causing more compaction and yield reduction compared to the field centre. This study used yield maps and vegetation indices to study the differences between headland, field edges, and field centre. The results showed lower yields and vegetation indices in headland and field edges.

Improving the Oenological Potential of Grapes for Prosecco PDO Sparkling Wine Thanks to Nitrogen Fertigation

Alessandro Zanchin, Lorenzo Lovat, Patrick Marcuzzo, Marco Sozzi, Francesco Marinello, Diego Tomasi

Summary: Researchers found that climate change is having a rapid impact on the quality of sparkling wines in the Mediterranean region, with increased temperatures and drought in summers being the common patterns. A study investigated the use of nitrogen nutrition to enhance acidity and preserve aromatic compounds in the grapes used for white sparkling wine production. The results showed that nitrogen fertigation is a reasonable practice to preserve wine's aroma and acidity in the face of climate change.

Summary: Oxyhydroxides, soil texture, and soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions are important for organic carbon cycling in soils. Traditional methods to determine these properties are time-consuming and expensive, but visible near infrared (Vis-NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy offer a promising alternative. This study demonstrates that combining soil infrared spectroscopy with compositional data analysis allows for cost-effective and reliable quantification of these properties, providing a practical opportunity to assess the role of SOC in global carbon cycling.

An advanced global soil erodibility (K) assessment including the effects of saturated hydraulic conductivity

Summary: The objective of this study is to incorporate soil hydraulic properties into the erodibility factor (K) of USLE-type models. By modifying and improving the existing equations for soil texture and permeability, the study successfully included information on saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) into the calculation of K factor. Using the Random Forest machine learning algorithm, two independent K factor maps with different spatial resolutions were generated. The results show that the decrease in K factor values has a positive impact on the modeling of soil erosion rates.

Summary: Atmospheric PM2.5, which can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), is associated with cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality. The study found that both the mass concentration of PM2.5 and the DTT activity were higher during the heating season than during the nonheating season. Combustion sources were the primary contributors to DTT activity during the heating season, while secondary formation dominated during the nonheating season. The study also revealed that biomass burning had the highest inherent oxidation potential among all sources investigated.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of aluminum in human colon cancer samples and its potential association with biological processes involved in cancer progression. Aluminum was found in tumor areas of 24% of patients and was associated with epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cell death. Additional analyses revealed higher tumor mutational burden and mutations in genes related to EMT and apoptosis in aluminum-positive colon cancers. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of aluminum toxicity may improve strategies for the management of colon cancer patients.
