Summary: Radiotherapy failure and poor tumor prognosis are mainly caused by radioresistance. The relationship and mechanisms between mitochondrial metabolism and cancer radioresistance are not fully understood. However, mitochondria play a crucial role in regulating various biological reactions and influencing the radiation effects of malignancies. Therefore, targeting mitochondrial signaling pathways for the development of novel anticancer drugs holds promise.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the apoptotic effects and anticancer mechanism of the biflavonoid bilobetin against human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. The results showed that bilobetin inhibited cell proliferation, induced apoptosis and DNA fragmentation, elevated ROS levels, and caused DNA damage in HCC cells. It also regulated the expression of apoptotic signaling pathway proteins.

Summary: Neurite degeneration, a self-destructive process, is a major component of neurodegenerative diseases induced by oxidative stress. The mechanism and signaling pathways of oxidative stress-induced neurite degeneration have been unknown. This review focuses on the phosphorylation-dependent regulation of the molecular interaction between ZNRF1 and the NADPH oxidase complex in reactive oxygen species-induced neurite degeneration.

Summary: This study evaluated the toxicity of BDE-47 towards RAW264.7 mouse macrophage cells and found that it caused a decrease in cell viability, an increase in apoptosis, and inhibition of phagocytosis. The mechanisms involved mitochondrial pathway-induced cell apoptosis and oxidative damage. Treatment with an antioxidant reversed the effects, while treatment with a ROS-inducer exacerbated them. These findings highlight the critical role of oxidative damage in BDE-47-induced suppression of immune function.

Summary: In this study, five cardiac glycosides were extracted from natural plants, and Lan C was identified as the most potent anti-cholangiocarcinoma compound. Lan C inhibited the growth and induced apoptosis of cholangiocarcinoma cells, without toxic effects on normal cells. Mechanistically, Lan C downregulated the expression of STAT3, leading to apoptosis. Therefore, Lan C may serve as a promising candidate for the treatment of cholangiocarcinoma.

Summary: Apoptosis is crucial for the normal growth, development, and immunity defense of living organisms. Viral infection triggers apoptosis in infected cells, but viruses have developed countermeasures to inhibit apoptosis in host cells. The study focuses on investigating the mechanism of how IAP2 induces apoptosis as well as the potential for creating resistant material through the knockout of BmNPV iap2.

Summary: Natural products have diverse structures and novelty, leading to unique physiological activities and new action mechanisms, making them important sources for innovative drugs and lead compounds. This study demonstrates that Santamarine targets TrxR to weaken cellular antioxidative function, inducing tumor cell oxidative stress-mediated apoptosis. TrxR plays a key role in the physiological effect of Santamarine on cells, revealing a previously unrecognized mechanism of antitumor activity.

Summary: This study found that for never smokers, the risk of developing lung cancer (LC) and dying from LC-related causes significantly increases with every 10 mu g/m(3) increment of PM2.5 exposure. However, daily consumption of more than two servings of vegetables and fruits is associated with lowering LC risk in smokers, and reducing PM2.5 exposure is associated with lowering LC risk for never smokers.

Summary: Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is a life-threatening disease that has been on the rise in recent years. Influenza has been identified as an independent risk factor for IA. This study aimed to investigate the association between influenza vaccination and the risk of IA in a high-risk population. A population-based cohort study was conducted using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database to analyze the influenza vaccination status and IA diagnosis among high-risk individuals. Results showed a 21% risk reduction of IA in vaccinated individuals compared to the non-vaccinated group. Influenza vaccination was particularly beneficial for males, those with immunosuppressive conditions, malignancy, diabetes, and certain host factors. In conclusion, influenza vaccination is recommended for high-risk individuals to reduce the risk of IA.
