Summary: This study investigates the trends in incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in young adults in the UK. The results show an overall downward trend in incidence and prevalence for ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and angina, but an upward trend for coronary revascularization, stroke/transient ischaemic attack (TIA), and heart failure (HF). The trends for myocardial infarction (MI) were stable in men and increased in women. The study highlights the worsening trends in CVD among young adults and calls for further investigation and public health intervention.

Summary: The incidence rate of first-ever stroke in Taiwan has decreased in both Chinese men and women in the early 21st century. Men have a higher incidence rate than women. Furthermore, the incidence of intracerebral hemorrhage has significantly decreased, while that of ischemic stroke has slightly decreased, with a significant decrease observed only in women.

Summary: The study examined the incidence of first-ever ischemic stroke in young adults aged 18-55 over a long period, and found that incidence rates increased during the early 2000s and then stabilized. This emphasizes the importance of dedicated prevention strategies for young individuals in reducing the burden of stroke.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the longitudinal trends in cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes mellitus incidence in Catalonia, Spain from 2009 to 2018, with a focus on age, sex, and socioeconomic deprivation. The results showed an increase in cardiovascular disease incidence in women aged 40-54 and 55-69, while there was no change or a slight decrease in women and men aged 70+. Hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus incidence decreased in all age groups and sexes, and higher incidence levels were found in the most deprived areas, especially in the 40-54 and 55-69 age groups.

Summary: A male predominance was observed in esophageal and gastric cancers across the world from 2003 to 2012, with variations in male-to-female incidence rate ratios by age. Further investigation is needed to understand the underlying etiologies of these cancers by histological subtype and subsite.

Summary: Stroke in young adults is becoming more common in the United States due to the increasing prevalence of traditional risk factors and non-modifiable risk factors. The unique mechanisms causing stroke in this population include cervical dissection, cardioembolic phenomenon, vasculitis and vasculopathy, connective tissue disease, patent foramen ovale, and cerebral venous thrombosis. Diagnosing stroke in young adults can be challenging because of its diverse clinical presentations. This article provides an overview of the epidemiology, explores the mechanisms, and updates the literature on the management and prevention of stroke in young adults.

Summary: Recent research in Spain has shown an increased incidence of ischemic stroke (IS) in young adults, with a higher percentage of vascular risk factors. This study analyzed data from a nationwide inpatient sample and estimated the in-hospital incidence of IS and its comorbidities by sex and age group. The findings revealed a higher incidence of IS in men under the age of 50, and young adults with IS had a higher prevalence of vascular risk factors compared to the general population. These results provide important insights for primary and secondary prevention strategies.

Summary: The study found that the incidence of ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage remained steady in younger adults from 2005 to 2018, while dropping in older adults, especially those over 70 years of age. Stroke mortality also decreased during this period, largely due to declines in mortality after severe strokes.

Summary: We examined self-reported reasons for activity limitations among Korean stroke survivors, considering age and sex differences. Data from 1547 stroke survivors who participated in a survey were analysed. The results showed that older and female stroke survivors reported more reasons for activity limitations compared to younger and male survivors, which differed by age and sex. A tailored approach considering age and sex is necessary to help stroke survivors with activity limitations, highlighting the importance of considering demographic factors in interventions to improve their quality of life.

Summary: This study provides an in-depth analysis of the evolution of COVID-19 mortality in selected countries during 2020 and 2021. The results show substantial variations in COVID-19 mortality rates across countries and seasons. COVID-19 mortality is highest among the elderly population, especially during winter, and men generally have higher mortality rates than women. Despite targeted vaccinations for the elderly, the mortality rates remain highest among those aged 75+ in 2021.

Summary: The APACHE-AF trial aimed to compare the effects of restarting anticoagulation and permanently avoiding anticoagulation in patients with atrial fibrillation who survived an anticoagulation-associated intracerebral haemorrhage. The study found that patients have a high subsequent annual risk of non-fatal stroke or vascular death, regardless of whether they were allocated to apixaban or avoiding anticoagulation. Larger randomized controlled trials are needed to identify subgroups in whom restarting anticoagulation might be beneficial or hazardous.
