Purpose The stiffness of muscle-tendon units and of tendons in the lower legs plays important roles in sprinting and long-distance running. However, the association of muscle stiffness with sprinting and running remains unknown. This study aimed to identify the characteristics of muscle stiffness in sprinters and long-distance runners, and to determine how muscle stiffness is related to the performance of these athletes. Methods In 22 male sprinters (SPR group), 22 male long-distance runners (LDR group), and 19 healthy untrained control male subjects (CON group), the muscle shear wave speed (a proxy for stiffness) of the vastus lateralis (VL) was measured under passive (resting) and active (contracting the knee extensors at 50% of maximal voluntary contraction) conditions, by using ultrasound shear wave elastography. Results The passive VL shear wave speed in SPR group was significantly lower than that in LDR group (P = 0.039). The active VL shear wave speed in LDR group was significantly higher than that in SPR (P = 0.022) and CON (P < 0.001) groups. In SPR group, the 100-m race time was negatively correlated to the passive VL shear wave speed (r = -0.483, P = 0.023) and positively correlated to the active VL shear wave speed (r = 0.522, P = 0.013). In the LDR group, the 5000-m race time was positively correlated to the passive VL shear wave speed (r = 0.438, P = 0.047) but not to the active VL shear wave speed. Conclusion The muscles of sprinters and long-distance runners exhibit characteristic stiffness that can be beneficial to their athletic performance. Passive and active muscle stiffness may play different roles in human locomotion, depending on locomotion speeds.

Association between medial gastrocnemius muscle-tendon unit architecture and ankle dorsiflexion range of motion with and without consideration of slack angle

Kosuke Hirata, Hiroaki Kanehisa, Naokazu Miyamoto

Summary: It was found that MTUs with long fascicle and short tendinous tissue are advantageous for joint flexibility. In vivo, MTU architectural parameters are correlated with joint range of motion, particularly with slack angle.

Summary: The study investigated the association between the COL1A1 rs1107946 variant and fatigue fracture/muscle injury in athletes, and found that C-allele carriers had a higher risk of fatigue fracture but a lower risk of muscle injury. In nonathletes, C-allele carriers showed lower BMD and muscle stiffness.

Naokazu Miyamoto, Kosuke Hirata

Summary: The study found that differences in muscle stiffness and proximal aponeurosis strain of the biceps femoris long head are minimal across different sites, and there is no exceptional muscle stiffness and proximal aponeurosis strain at moderate-to-high contraction intensity where sprinting-type hamstring strain typically occurs.

Association of age-related decrease in intracellular-to-total water ratio with that in explosive strength of the plantar flexors: a cross-sectional study

Kosuke Hirata, Natsuki Iida, Akihiro Kanda, Mikio Shoji, Tsukasa Yoshida, Yosuke Yamada, Ryota Akagi

Summary: The association between age-related differences in the intracellular-to-total water ratio and explosive strength of the plantar flexors was investigated. Older participants showed lower intracellular-to-total water ratio, rate of torque development, and longer time-to-peak torque compared to young participants. The intracellular-to-total water ratio was positively associated with rate of torque development and negatively associated with time-to-peak torque, but not with electromyography activity. Rate of torque development was positively associated with electromyography activity. These findings suggest that the intracellular-to-total water ratio may be a useful predictor of age-related decrease in explosive strength and reflects changes in intrinsic contractile properties.

Summary: The study investigated associations of muscle quality indices with joint-level power-related measures in older males. Results showed varying correlations between muscle quality indices and power-related measures, indicating lower knee extension power in participants with higher echo intensity, lower intracellular water content, and lower specific muscle strength.

Membrane capacitance and characteristic frequency are associated with contractile properties of skeletal muscle

Yosuke Yamada, Kosuke Hirata, Natsuki Iida, Akihiro Kanda, Mikio Shoji, Tsukasa Yoshida, Motohiko Myachi, Ryota Akagi

Summary: Segmental bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy can be used to measure cell membrane capacitance and characteristic frequencies of tissues. Higher cell membrane capacitance and lower characteristic frequencies are associated with larger surface area of skeletal muscle fibers with T-tubules. Muscle fiber membrane is a significant physiological factor influencing surface electromyograms and the number of motor units recruited. It is suggested that the amplitude of surface electromyograms may be correlated with cell membrane capacitance and characteristic frequencies.

Can phase angle from bioelectrical impedance analysis associate with neuromuscular properties of the knee extensors?

Kosuke Hirata, Mari Ito, Yuta Nomura, Tsukasa Yoshida, Yosuke Yamada, Ryota Akagi

Summary: Maintenance and improvement of neuromuscular functions is crucial for everyone. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) can assess body electrical properties, such as phase angle (PhA), which is regarded as a muscle quantity/quality index. This study found that both thigh and whole-body PhA were associated with maximal voluntary muscle strength of the knee extensors, and this association may be due to intrinsic contractile properties but not neural aspects.

Effects of three-dimension movie visual fatigue on cognitive performance and brain activity

Summary: This study investigated the differences in the effects of watching a 2D and 3D movie on cognition and brain activity. The results showed that watching a 3D movie led to visual fatigue, resulting in longer reaction times and decreased brain activity in the right primary somatosensory cortex for the visual task. The effects on the auditory task were not significant. This suggests that performing tasks requiring visual information immediately after using a 3D application may pose unexpected risks.

Acute effect of static stretching on non-muscular tissue stiffness and joint flexibility: a comparative study between older and young men

Kosuke Hirata, Ryota Akagi

Summary: This study compared the acute effects of static stretching on non-muscular tissue stiffness in older and young adults and examined whether a decrease in tissue stiffness improves joint flexibility. The results showed that static stretching increased range of motion and decreased joint stiffness in both groups, with no significant differences between the two groups. Only the older adult group exhibited a significant decrease in sciatic nerve stiffness. There was a significant positive correlation between sciatic nerve stiffness and joint stiffness.
