Summary: The study presents the synthesis and characterization of a novel triple stimuli responsive interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) based on two polyzwitterionic networks. The IPN hydrogel can expand or shrink in response to changes in temperature, pH, and salt concentration. It has good mechanical stability and exhibits non-cytotoxicity and antibiofouling activity against various bacteria. The in vivo behavior suggests that this smart material has great potential as a biomaterial.

Summary: The study reports on the synthesis and temperature-responsive properties of poly(PEGMA) hydrogel thin films. Surface-attached poly(PEGMA) hydrogel films were synthesized using a simple, versatile, and well-controlled thiol-ene click reaction method, with the transition temperature finely tunable by adjusting the number of PEG units. The LCST properties of the hydrogel films are not sensitive to salt, holding promise for applications in biology such as injectable hydrogels, drug delivery systems, microfluidic valves, and flow switches for biotechnologies.

Summary: In this study, St-MMA particles with PEGMA and/or GMA brushes were synthesized and found to effectively remove bilirubin by improving the BSA immobilization capacity and reducing processing time. Attachment of BSA to the particles reduced bilirubin concentration in plasma from levels that threaten patient survival to levels close to those of healthy individuals.

Summary: The fracture behavior of polyrotaxane (PR)-modified poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was investigated. By adding only 1 wt % of PR to the PMMA matrix, substantial improvement in fracture toughness was achieved while maintaining modulus and transparency. The interaction between PR and PMMA contributes to higher molecular mobility and enhanced molecular cooperativity, leading to the formation of massive crazing and improved fracture toughness.

Summary: In this study, injectable PNIPAM/PVP interpenetrating polymer networks were fabricated and characterized. The results show that the internal structure of the injectable IPNs can be controlled by adjusting the PVP molecular weight and degree of thiolation. The PNIPAM gelation drives the formation of domains, with PNIPAM mainly located in the PVP-rich domains and PVP entrapped in the PNIPAM-rich domain. Additionally, the structural reconfiguration of the IPNs can be achieved by heating above the volume phase transition temperature of the PNIPAM phase, which is influenced by the molecular weight and thiolation degree of the PVP precursor polymers.

Summary: Poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] (POEGMA) was investigated as a potential drug carrier for tumor diagnosis. Different derivatives of POEGMA with varying molecular weights and side chain lengths were synthesized and labeled with radioisotopes or fluorescence dyes. The results showed that the POEGMA derivatives were efficiently taken up by tumor cells and exhibited high accumulation in tumor tissues. In vivo fluorescence imaging using optimized POEGMA derivatives confirmed their suitability as drug carriers for sensitive tumor diagnosis.

Summary: The study investigated the tribological properties of micropored pHEMA under physiologically relevant conditions, finding that it significantly reduced frictional energy dissipation at relatively high loads and sliding speeds. This was attributed to the greater amount and retentivity of the interfacial fluid supported by the free water squeezed out of micropores with smaller dimensions under higher load and sliding speed.

Summary: Chitosan hydrogels were prepared by chemical modification and double crosslinking in a water/oil emulsion. The modified chitosan showed better control of dimensional properties and morphology compared to neat chitosan. In addition, the modified hydrogels exhibited pH-dependent behavior and demonstrated excellent capacity for drug loading and release, making them suitable for controlled release applications in biomedicine.

Summary: As a promising approach in translational medicine, the decellularization of discarded livers to produce bioscaffolds that support recellularization has potential in overcoming the limitations of conventional liver transplantation. In this study, the researchers investigated the use of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibition to preserve the extracellular matrix (ECM) during liver decellularization. The results demonstrated that the application of an MMP inhibitor significantly improved the preservation of ECM components and mechanical properties of the bioscaffolds, which supported cell viability and function in vitro. The study also confirmed that the MMP inhibition led to the inhibition of MMP2 and MMP9, providing a novel method to enhance ECM preservation during liver decellularization.

Summary: Human skin equivalents (HSEs) play a crucial role in tissue engineering. This study introduces a 3D-printed culture insert to apply a static radial constraint on HSEs and examines its effects on tissue characteristics. The results show that the diameter of the culture insert significantly influences tissue contraction, fibroblast and matrix organization, keratinocyte differentiation, epidermal stratification, and basement membrane formation. This study provides important insights for the design of skin tissue engineering.

Summary: This paper reviewed the primary methods for improving the overall properties of biodegradable zinc stents. It discussed the mechanical properties, degradation behavior, and biocompatibility of various improvement strategies. Alloying was found to be the most common, simple, and effective method for improving mechanical properties. Deformation processing and surface modification further improved the mechanical properties and biological activity of zinc alloys. Meanwhile, structural design could endow stents with special properties. Manufacturing zinc alloys with excellent properties and exploring their interaction mechanism with the human body are areas for future research.
