Summary: This article summarizes the role and mechanisms of SIRT1 in chronic pain, exploring its regulation of inflammation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial function, suggesting that SIRT1 agonists may serve as potential therapeutic drugs for chronic pain.

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated the efficacy and safety of teriparatide (TP) in the treatment of TM-associated osteoporosis in real-life clinical practice. The results showed that TP significantly improved bone mineral density, especially at the lumbar spine, and prevented fractures. However, some patients experienced side effects such as muscle and bone pain.

Summary: In this randomized controlled trial, it was found that once-weekly oral Alendronate 70 mg effectively improves bone mineral density at the lumbar spine, reduces serum bone turnover markers, and alleviates back pain in thalassemia patients with osteoporosis. The treatment provides a new therapeutic option.

Summary: This study investigated the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of pediatric patients with beta thalassemia major (beta-TM) after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), compared to those treated with blood transfusions. The results showed that HSCT was associated with a higher HRQoL in various domains, and there was no significant difference in HRQoL between sibling or unrelated HLA-matched HSCT. The study highlights the importance of considering HSCT as a treatment option for pediatric patients with beta-TM and provides valuable information for physicians to counsel patients and parents.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and bone mineral density (BMD), vitamin D, and bone turnover biomarkers in multi-transfused patients with thalassemia major (TM). The results showed that HCV infection was positively associated with the prevalence of low bone mass, suggesting that HCV infection is an additive risk factor for low bone mass in TM patients. Osteocalcin may play a role in this association.

Summary: Research investigates chronic pain in patients with rare diseases, finding neurobiological and functional overlap between conditions, suggesting emotional sequelae could be an emotional homologue of physical pain mediated via overlapping brain circuitry. The study suggests rare diseases may serve as models for understanding pathophysiological processes of chronic pain.

Summary: Vitamin D deficiency is common in patients with thalassemia, but the prevalence and severity vary. Existing evidence is insufficient to conclude whether vitamin D supplementation is associated with bone mineral density improvement in this specific population.

Summary: This phenomenological study found that depression and chronic nonfracture pain are common among patients with fragility fractures, and that fractures can worsen existing depression and pain. It is important for healthcare providers to inquire about and address these emotional and physical issues in patients with fragility fractures.

Summary: This study provides a systematic review of cost-effectiveness studies on vertebral augmentation procedures for osteoporotic vertebral fractures. The results show that both vertebroplasty and balloon kyphoplasty are considered cost-effective alternatives to conservative management in multiple healthcare settings.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of pain, illness, and medicine metaphors in consultations between chronic pain patients and healthcare professionals in a pain clinic in Belgium. Metaphors can provide insight into how health professionals and patients construct their understanding and experiences of illness, pain, and medicine in their interactions.

Summary: In the United States, cannabis is being used more often to manage chronic pain. This study looked at trends in cannabis use disorders (CUDs) among Veterans Health Administration (VHA) patients with chronic pain, and whether these trends varied by age. The study found that CUD prevalence has increased more among VHA patients with chronic pain, particularly among those age ≥65.

Summary: This study aims to describe the difference in prevalence of chronic pain (CP) at mid-life (ages 40-60) between men and women in the general population. Using systematic review and meta-analysis, the study will summarize existing evidence on the prevalence of CP in men and women, identifying gaps in knowledge and areas for further research.
