Summary: This article provides a comprehensive review of the current status of CLIA-waived rapid point-of-care infectious pathogen testing in community pharmacies. Experts suggest that understanding the available CLIA-waived rapid POCTs and their key characteristics is essential for choosing the most suitable tests for individual pharmacies. Choices will be influenced by pharmacy workflow patterns, local populations and insurances, as well as state regulations regarding pharmacist scope of practice. As nucleic acid amplification tests advance, the business case and implementation framework for using molecular tests in community pharmacies will become clearer.

Summary: Since 2020, England's Pharmacy Quality Scheme (PQS) has implemented measures to increase antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) activities in community pharmacies. The use of an AMS e-Learning module, Antibiotic Guardian pledge, and AMS Action plan were required in 2020/21, while the 2021/22 criteria included the use of the TARGET Antibiotic Checklist. This study examines the implementation of these initiatives and identifies barriers faced by community pharmacies. The findings suggest that a significant number of pharmacies exceeded the requirements, with pharmacy teams conducting various checks and interventions to ensure appropriate antibiotic use.
