Mosquitoes are considered the most important vectors for the transmission of pathogens to humans. Aedes aegypti is a unique species, not only by its highly anthropophilic and peridomestic habits but also because it can transmit an important variety of pathogenic viruses. Examples are dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, Zika, and Mayaro viruses. After ingesting viremic blood, a wide range of mechanisms are activated in the mosquito to counteract viral infection. Nevertheless, these arboviruses possess strategies to overcome barriers in the mosquito and eventually reach the salivary glands to continue the transmission cycle. However, the infection and eventual transmission of arbovirus depends on multiple factors. The current review focuses in detail on the anatomic, physiological, and molecular characteristics of the mosquito A. aegypti that participate in response to a viral infection. In the past decades, the awareness of the importance of this mosquito as a disease vector and its impact on human health was largely recognized. We need to improve our comprehension of molecular mechanisms that determine the outcome of successful virus replication or control of infection for each arbovirus in the vector; this could lead to the design of effective control strategies in the future. Summary: This study evaluated the sensitivity and performance of different RT-qPCR kits for detecting SARS-CoV-2, explored the feasibility of directly detecting viral RNA in NSS, and proposed a detection protocol that omits the RNA extraction step for faster and more efficient COVID-19 diagnosis.

Pregnant Women Infected with Zika Virus Show Higher Viral Load and Immunoregulatory Cytokines Profile with CXCL10 Increase

Elizabeth Camacho-Zavala, Clara Santacruz-Tinoco, Esteban Munoz, Rommel Chacon-Salinas, Ma Isabel Salazar-Sanchez, Concepcion Grajales, Joaquin Gonzalez-Ibarra, Victor Hugo Borja-Aburto, Thomas Jaenisch, Cesar R. Gonzalez-Bonilla

Summary: During pregnancy, women infected with ZIKV may have higher viral loads but show similar levels of inflammatory markers compared to nonpregnant individuals. The presence of ZIKV in pregnancy favors a regulatory profile with a systemic anti-inflammatory response, characterized by high levels of specific cytokines that are essential for antiviral response and have been correlated with congenital malformations.

Summary: The local public health authorities reported nine cases of chikungunya in Mexico in 2019 with none in Guerrero, a coastal state. Testing in Guerrero revealed a significant number of cases that met the WHO definition, indicating a severe underestimation of chikungunya cases in Mexico.

Summary: The relationship between the neuroendocrine and immune systems is crucial for maintaining homeostasis. Hormones and immune system cells have complex interactions, regulating cell differentiation, function, and cytokine production. Infiltration of immune cells is associated with disease invasiveness.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 Lambda variant is prevalent in Latin America. Antibodies generated by CoronaVac and BNT162b2 were analyzed for their neutralizing capacity against SARS-CoV-2 Lambda in plasma samples from healthcare workers and patients in Chile. The study found that BNT162b2 elicits higher neutralizing antibody titres compared to CoronaVac. The study also identified mutations in the Lambda variant's spike protein that may contribute to immune escape.

Study of mosquito (Culicidae) larvae and characterisation of water bodies in urban and periurban areas

Luis M. Rodriguez-Martinez, Fabian Correa-Morales, Cassandra Gonzalez-Acosta, Miguel Moreno-Garcia

Summary: Urbanisation alters mosquito distribution and community composition, potentially increasing the risk of vector-borne diseases due to habitat disturbance. This study analysed the presence of larvae and eco-physicochemical characteristics of water bodies in different urban and periurban areas of Villahermosa City, Tabasco, Mexico. A total of 67,528 larvae were collected, with 1366 identified species and 15 observed species. Although Culex spp. were dominant, Anopheles albimanus was the only species present in all habitats. Eco-physicochemical parameters showed variability among breeding sites, but weak correlations were found with species presence. Habitat disturbance may lead to eco-physicochemical variations and alter mosquito community composition, increasing the risk of vector-borne diseases in Villahermosa.
