This paper examines the relationship among carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, GDP, and energy in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries by using a Responsiveness Scores (RS) approach. Empirical results over the period 1971-2013 suggest that GDP per capita and energy consumption show positive RSs, while trade and urban population negative ones. Moreover, energy consumption and urban population reveal moderate increasing returns to scale, while GDP per capita exhibits decreasing positive returns. Furthermore, three-way factors analysis sets out that most of the countries lays on regions with moderate negative Total Responsiveness Scores (TRS). This means that when all factors are jointly increased, CO2 emissions have a moderate decrease. In addition, some GCC countries present a different pattern compared to the average pattern of MENA countries. Finally, radar plots indicate that, overall, RS pattern over factors is moderately heterogeneous within GCC countries, with larger variability appearing in the response to urban population and GDP.

Assessing the Co-movements Between Electricity Use and Carbon Emissions in the GCC Area: Evidence from a Wavelet Coherence Method

Ali Matar, Zeeshan Fareed, Cosimo Magazzino, Mahmoud Al-Rdaydeh, Nicolas Schneider

Summary: This paper examines the relationship between CO2 emissions and various factors such as electricity consumption, economic growth, urbanization, and trade openness in six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries including Oman, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar, using data from 1965 to 2019. In contrast to previous studies, the authors use the wavelet coherence approach in the frequency domain to complement the time series econometric methods. The findings provide important policy recommendations for environmental planning and contribute valuable information for the development of sustainable energies in the Gulf region.

The Environmental Kuznets Curve in a long-term perspective: Parametric vs semi-parametric models

Cosimo Magazzino, Marco Gallegati, Federico Giri

Summary: Empirical studies of the EKC hypothesis may be sensitive to datasets, specifications, and functional forms. This paper investigates the long-run relationship among CO2 emissions, real GDP, and energy consumption using a panel of 9 advanced economies from 1870 to 2008. The results suggest that while the EKC exists at the panel level post-1950s, the inverted U-shaped relationship between CO2 and real GDP is only validated for a subset of countries at the individual country level. However, a clear inverse U-shaped pattern emerges for all countries, except Canada, when a semi-parametric regression framework is applied.

If tourism induces the EKC hypothesis, how does governance moderate its impact in the EU without the UK?

Cosimo Magazzino, Festus Fatai Adedoyin, Faik Bilgili, Umer Shahzad

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between tourism, income levels, and environmental degradation in the European Union (EU) after Brexit, focusing on the impact of governance. The findings suggest that as income levels increase, the influence of tourism on CO2 emissions decreases. However, per capita growth contributes to long-term carbon emissions. The study also reveals a unidirectional causal relationship from per capita growth to carbon emissions and from carbon emissions to tourism arrivals.

The trilemma among CO2 emissions, energy use, and economic growth in Russia

Cosimo Magazzino, Marco Mele, Carlo Drago, Sevda Kuskaya, Cesare Pozzi, Umberto Monarca

Summary: This paper investigates the relationship between CO2 emissions, energy use, and GDP in Russia from 1990 to 2020. The study employs time-series analysis and machine learning experiments to examine the causal flows and hypotheses. The findings suggest a bidirectional causality between energy use and CO2 emissions, a unidirectional link from CO2 emissions to real GDP, and the predominance of the neutrality hypothesis between energy use and GDP. The study highlights the importance of energy conservation measures in sustaining economic growth without adversely affecting the environment.

Towards Achieving Sustainability in the BRICS Economies: The Role of Renewable Energy Consumption and Economic Risk

Opeoluwa Seun Ojekemi, Mehmet Aga, Cosimo Magazzino

Summary: This study examines the impact of renewable energy consumption, economic risk, and financial risk on the load capacity factor (LF) in BRICS countries. The analysis covers the period from 1990 to 2019. The findings reveal the presence of a cointegrating relationship. Fossil fuels and economic growth decrease LF, while economic risk and renewable energy sources increase LF. The results also show that these factors can forecast ecological quality, indicating the importance of promoting environmentally friendly technologies and economic and financial stability to enhance energy efficiency and the adoption of energy-saving products.

Ecological footprint, electricity consumption, and economic growth in China: geopolitical risk and natural resources governance

Cosimo Magazzino

Summary: This paper examines the relationship between ecological footprint (EF), electricity consumption, and GDP in China using annual data from 1960 to 2019. The study finds that factors like trade openness, urbanization, and life expectancy may increase EF as they are mainly human-induced ecological distortions. The results show that electricity consumption and real GDP contribute to environmental degradation, while trade and urbanization help reduce EF and improve environmental quality. The study also concludes that urbanization and life expectancy have a significant impact on environmental degradation across all frequencies.

Examining the Energy-Environmental Kuznets Curve in OECD Countries Considering their Population

Heris Golpira, Heibatolah Sadeghi, Cosimo Magazzino

Summary: This research examines the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis in 37 OECD countries from 1960 to 2019. Panel quantile regressions show different curves (U-shaped, N-shaped) for different quartiles, indicating the impact of economic growth on emissions varies. Cointegrating regressions reveal a detrimental effect on the environment from economic growth, fossil fuel consumption, and population, while renewable energy consumption reduces CO2 emissions. Panel causality tests confirm a feedback mechanism between CO2 emissions and other variables, and single-country estimates show significant variability in the sample.
