The case for embedding researchers in conservation agencies

Although protected areas represent a pivotal response to escalating anthropogenic threats, they face many pressures, inside and outside their boundaries. Amid these challenges, effective conservation is guided by evidence-based decision making supported by dynamic processes of learning and knowledge exchange. Although different models promote knowledge exchange, embedding research scientists within conservation agencies is best suited to supporting evidence-based conservation. Based on available literature and our experiences on several continents, we considered the benefits, challenges, and opportunities associated with embedding research scientists within conservation agencies and the research required to better understand the effectiveness of the embedding model for evidence-based conservation. Embedded researchers provide long-term commitment to building social capital among academic and nonacademic stakeholders; act as skilled gatekeepers who increase 2-way flow of knowledge between scientists and managers; attract, coordinate, and support management-relevant external research projects; drive the design and maintenance of long-term monitoring; and align their research with information needs. Notwithstanding the many benefits, research capacity of conservation agencies is declining worldwide. A significant challenge is that the values, structures, functions, and effectiveness of the embedding model of knowledge exchange remain poorly evaluated and documented. Also, embedded researchers have to balance their desire for creativity and flexibility with the standardization and quality control required by their public sector agencies; may be perceived as not credible because they are not truly independent of their agency; and have to couple scientific productivity with skills for transdisciplinary research, social facilitation, and stakeholder engagement. Systematic research on embedding and other models of knowledge exchange, across different world contexts, is required to better understand the benefits, costs, and institutional arrangements associated with different models. El Caso para la Incorporacion de Investigadores en las Agencias de Conservacion Aunque las areas protegidas representan una respuesta crucial a las crecientes amenazas antropogenicas, estas enfrentan muchas presiones dentro y fuera de sus fronteras. En medio de estos desafios, la conservacion efectiva se guia por la toma de decisiones con base en evidencias respaldada por los procesos dinamicos de aprendizaje e intercambio de conocimiento. Mientras que diferentes modelos promueven el intercambio de conocimiento, la incorporacion de investigadores cientificos en las agencias de conservacion es mas adecuada para respaldar la conservacion basada en evidencias. A comprehensive review of mammalian carnivore translocations

Summary: This study reviewed global terrestrial carnivore conservation translocations and their effects on ecosystems. The results showed biases in taxonomic representation and a focus on large carnivores. Small carnivores were underrepresented and more prone to failure. The impacts of carnivore translocations on prey and ecosystems were rarely investigated, and there was a lack of post-release monitoring and empirical studies.

Summary: As the United Nations develops a post-2020 global biodiversity framework, the need for new goals and targets for ecosystem conservation is being emphasized. Reliable and resilient research on ecosystem responses to environmental change and management is necessary to achieve dual imperatives of conserving biodiversity and sustaining ecosystem services. However, the lack of a globally consistent ecosystem classification hampers progress in developing conservation targets and sustainability goals.

Resilience to hydrological droughts in the northern Murray-Darling Basin, Australia

Summary: This study investigates the declining streamflows in the northern Murray-Darling Basin in Australia, and reveals the impacts of both meteorological and anthropogenic factors on the decrease in streamflow, resulting in the reduction of waterbird abundance and ecosystem resilience. The four-step framework developed in this study can be applied to any catchment with sufficient time-series data and helps in adapting to hydrological droughts.

Delivering global water security: Embedding water justice as a response to increased irrigation efficiency

Summary: Improving irrigation infrastructure has been proposed as a solution for water scarcity and low agricultural productivity, but without transparent and rigorous governance safeguards, it may lead to higher water consumption and increased water scarcity. Upgraded irrigation systems can also displace other users, including Indigenous Peoples. This article critiques current approaches to governing irrigation efficiency and proposes new governance pathways and options.

Using drones and citizen science counts to track colonial waterbird breeding, an indicator for ecosystem health on the Chobe River, Botswana

Summary: This study investigated the effectiveness of waterbird breeding at the Kasane breeding colony as an indicator of ecosystem health related to river flow and flooding. The researchers used drone surveys to count nests and birds in the colony and estimated three breeding success indices. The results showed that reproductive success varied among species and was significantly related to Chobe River level. The study also explored the relationships between waterbird breeding and river level and flow over a historical period. The findings suggest that waterbird breeding can be a useful indicator for ecosystem health and can help predict the impacts of climate change and water resource development on aquatic ecosystems.

Habitat associations of dryland avian communities during an extended dry period

Summary: The influence of resource availability on ecosystem function varies spatially and temporally. This study investigated the persistence and habitat use of avian communities in an arid desert region in Australia during an extended dry period. The results showed differences in species composition, habitat preference, and resource use between the dry period and the wet period. Vegetation heterogeneity was found to be important for the conservation of avian refuges during the dry period.

The influence of drought, precipitation and fossorial mammal reintroduction on the density of fossorial arthropods and their burrows in arid Australia

Summary: The survival and density of burrowing arthropods and their burrows in arid environments following prolonged dry periods and subsequent rains is poorly understood. In this study, the density of burrowing and ground-nesting arthropods and their burrows in Australia's Strzelecki Desert over two years was examined. The study found that the largest changes in arthropod abundance and burrow density occurred between a period of drought and the commencement of drought-breaking rains.

Citizen science participant motivations and behaviour: Implications for biodiversity data coverage

Summary: Citizen science data play an important role in studying biodiversity distribution, but are affected by biases including gaps and redundancies. This study surveyed participants of a frog biodiversity project to understand how their motivations and behavior relate to their willingness to change data collection practices. The findings show that participants are willing to alter their behavior for less biased sampling, indicating an interest in collecting more meaningful data.

Experimental evidence that behavioral nudges in citizen science projects can improve biodiversity data

Summary: One way to improve the value of citizen science data is through promoting adaptive sampling. In a study using the FrogID project in Australia, it was found that participants were willing to adopt an adaptive sampling protocol, resulting in improved sampling of biodiversity. Adaptive sampling can increase the value of citizen science data for biodiversity research and project design.

Fish Injury from Movements across Hydraulic Structures: A Review

Summary: Fish migration is crucial for maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems, but worldwide hydraulic structures hinder natural fish migration. The understanding of hydrodynamic effects causing fish injury in different hydraulic systems remains limited. This study reviewed existing literature to identify current knowledge on fish injury thresholds in laboratory and field studies of hydraulic systems. Hydrodynamic effects leading to fish injury are often described with simplified parameters, but they occur simultaneously in turbulent flows across hydraulic structures, making it difficult to link specific fish injuries to a particular hydrodynamic effect. Variations in injury severity depend on the type and intensity of hydrodynamic effects, as well as fish species and sizes.

Flow hydrodynamics drive effective fish attraction behaviour into slotted fishway entrances

Summary: This study experimentally measured the flow fields at slotted fishway entrances and tracked fish behaviors. The results showed that the entrance design had a significant impact on the attraction flow, with the streamlined design being more effective. Silver perch and Australian bass had different swimming trajectories, but both preferred areas of low turbulence.

Tracking landscape scale vegetation change in the arid zone by integrating ground, drone and satellite data

Summary: A combined multiscale approach using ground, drone, and satellite surveys is able to accurately map and monitor landscapes. The study utilized field observations and drone-collected imagery to estimate changes in vegetation. The random forest classifiers showed high accuracy, performing well in different landscape types and extreme conditions. The method also linked the classified drone vegetation to Landsat satellite imagery, allowing accurate tracking of vegetation at large scales.

Despite existing legislation and policy, there is insufficient environmental assessment and protection in these areas.
