Erwinia amylovora is the etiological agent of fire blight, a devastating disease which is a global threat to commercial apple and pear production. The Erwinia genus includes a wide range of different species belonging to plant pathogens, epiphytes and even opportunistic human pathogens. The aim of the present study is to understand, within the Erwinia genus, the genetic differences between phytopathogenic strains and those strains not reported to be phytopathogenic. The genes related to the hydroxamate siderophores iron uptake have been considered due to their potential druggability. In E. amylovora siderophore-mediated iron acquisition plays a relevant role in the progression of Fire blight. Here we analyzed the taxonomic relations within Erwinia genus and the relevance of the genes related to the siderophore-mediated iron uptake pathway. The results of this study highlight the presence of a well-defined sub-group of Rosaceae infecting species taxonomically and genetically related with a high number of conserved core genes. The analysis of the complete ferrioxamine transport system has led to the identification of two genes exclusively present in the Rosaceae infecting strains.

Diversity and metabolic profile of the microbial communities inhabiting the darkened white marble of Florence Cathedral

A. Checcucci, L. Borruso, D. Petrocchi, B. Perito

Summary: This study investigated the microbial communities inhabiting marble in two different exposed areas of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, using DNA metabarcoding and Phenotype Microarray analysis. The results showed differences in community structure and metabolic potential between the two study sites.

Beneficial effect of polyphenols in COVID-19 and the ectopic F1FO-ATP synthase: Is there a link?

Isabella Panfoli, Alfonso Esposito

Summary: COVID-19 has been proposed as an endothelial disease and polyphenols are being investigated as potential agents to prevent and treat it. Polyphenols can inhibit the activity of F1Fo-ATP synthase, including the ectopic F1Fo-ATP synthase expressed on the endothelial plasma membrane. This inhibition of polyphenols can help reduce oxidative stress caused by the electron transfer chain.

Summary: This study investigates the microbial diversity of water pollution in Zhangye City to assess environmental exposure and potential threats to human health. The findings suggest that environmental factors and pollutant concentrations affect microbial diversity, highlighting the importance of microbial communities as indicators for ecological status diagnosis.

Erwinia tasmaniensis levansucrase shows enantiomer selection for (S)-1,2,4-butanetriol

Ivan Polsinelli, Marco Salomone-Stagni, Stefano Benini

Summary: This study reveals the structure of the levansucrase from Erwinia tasmaniensis in complex with (S)-1,2,4-butanetriol and assesses the protein's preference for a specific enantiomer. Additionally, a comparison of the structures of levansucrases and inulosucrases suggests potential differences in fructose binding modes between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

A Matter of Metals: Copper but Not Cadmium Affects the Microbial Alpha-Diversity of Soils and Sediments - a Meta-analysis

Marco Signorini, Gabriele Midolo, Stefano Cesco, Tanja Mimmo, Luigimaria Borruso

Summary: This study conducted the first meta-analysis to investigate the effect of cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) additions on soil microbial alpha-diversity. The results showed a negative dose-dependent response for Cu but not for Cd, and extreme doses of Cu did not cause a dramatic loss in alpha-diversity. The study highlights the different behaviors of bacterial communities in response to soil pollution, depending on the metal.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of microplastics (MPs) on the germination, morphology, and metabolism of barley, cucumber, and tomato. The results show that the presence of MPs significantly affects the morphological parameters of barley, even at low concentrations, and has a dose-dependent effect on cucumber and tomato. MP exposure also leads to metabolomic changes in all three plant species.

The Flavone Cirsiliol from Salvia x jamensis Binds the F1 Moiety of ATP Synthase, Modulating Free Radical Production

Lavinia Carlini, Gabriele Tancreda, Valeria Iobbi, Federico Caicci, Silvia Bruno, Alfonso Esposito, Daniela Calzia, Stefano Benini, Angela Bisio, Lucia Manni, Anna Schito, Carlo Enrico Traverso, Silvia Ravera, Isabella Panfoli

Summary: This study investigated the potential of the flavonoid cirsiliol in modulating oxidative phosphorylation and reactive oxygen species production in mammalian retinal rod outer segments (OS). The results showed that cirsiliol inhibited ATP production and reduced free radical production in the OS exposed to ambient light, suggesting its potential as a promising compound against oxidative stress.

Summary: Propolis is a resinous material produced by honeybees from different plant sources and used in the hive as a building material and to protect the colony from parasites and pathogens. Recent studies have shown that propolis hosts diverse microbial strains, some with great antimicrobial potential.

The Unusual Dominance of the Yeast Genus Glaciozyma in the Deeper Layer in an Antarctic Permafrost Core (Adelie Cove, Northern Victoria Land) Is Driven by Elemental Composition

Ciro Sannino, Luigimaria Borruso, Ambra Mezzasoma, Benedetta Turchetti, Stefano Ponti, Pietro Buzzini, Tanja Mimmo, Mauro Guglielmin

Summary: Rock glaciers in Antarctic permafrost areas are postglacial cryogenic landforms, but their chemical-physical and biotic composition is understudied. In this study, a permafrost core was analyzed for chemical-physical parameters and fungal community. The core showed significant differences in chemical and physical characteristics among its five units, with higher values of certain elements found in the deepest unit. Yeasts dominated over filamentous fungi, and Glaciozyma was the predominant yeast genus, especially in the deepest unit. This dominance was correlated with the elemental composition of the core.
