Implementing integrated online prevention to reduce the risk of both obesity and eating disorders, in the school setting, is a promising approach. The challenge is to develop highly user-friendly and motivating programs, to foster adherence and effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usability of such a universal prevention program for students aged 14-19 years, and to address engagement issues. A mixed-methods approach was chosen, consisting of a think-aloud task, a semi-structured interview, and a questionnaire including items on sociodemographic characteristics and the System Usability Scale (SUS). Usability tests were conducted in two rounds, with five adolescents participating per round. Mean score in the SUS was 92.5 of 100 points (range 85-100), in the second round, after some adaptations from the participants' feedback. In the course of the think-aloud tasks and interviews, five major themes emergedvisual design, navigation, mode of transfer, content, and engagement conditions. Interesting headlines, gamification, and monitoring tools are crucial for engagement. Apart from the importance of using the program during school hours, the study showed that problems currently perceived as important by the target group, need to be considered and addressed, prior to offering them prevention programs, which highlights the importance of a user-centered design.

C. Barr Taylor, Andrea K. Graham, Rachael E. Flatt, Karin Waldherr, Ellen E. Fitzsimmons-Craft

Summary: The research reviewed the effectiveness of internet-based treatments for common mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and eating disorders. The interventions were found to successfully reduce symptoms and be efficacious treatments among adults, with lower effect sizes for eating disorders and substance abuse compared to depression and anxiety. Efforts are needed to examine dissemination and implementation of these interventions in various healthcare and other settings.

Michael Zeiler, Julia Philipp, Stefanie Truttmann, Karin Waldherr, Gudrun Wagner, Andreas Karwautz

Summary: Overweight adolescents had higher levels of psychopathology, eating disorder risk, and lower well-being compared to normal weight peers, while underweight adolescents reported increased internalizing problems but not increased eating disorder risk or reduced well-being. Anxious/depressed mood and attention problems were central nodes in the network for both overweight and underweight groups, with social problems and socially withdrawn behavior playing a bridging role among underweight individuals.

Summary: The study aims to investigate the potential benefits of probiotics for patients with anorexia nervosa by comparing the effects of probiotic supplementation on gut microbiota in AN patients through a clinical trial. It is hypothesized that probiotic treatment can improve gut microbiota, promote weight gain, reduce inflammation and gastrointestinal discomfort, leading to better outcomes in the treatment of AN.

Summary: This study evaluated the relationship between personality factors, coping styles, developmental conditions, and quality of life in female adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes and high vs. low HbA1c. The results showed that patients with high HbA1c levels demonstrated disadvantageous personality and coping styles, as well as lower quality of life. These findings highlight the importance of addressing these factors in the treatment of female adolescents with type 1 diabetes and management problems.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the psychosocial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on adolescents with type-1 diabetes (T1D). It was found that parents, who were concerned about their children with T1D being part of the potential COVID-19 risk group, strictly adhered to preventive measures. Trustworthy information from reliable sources mitigated these concerns. The use of digital diabetes treatment was well-received. The pandemic situation influenced the transition from parental control to diabetes self-management for adolescents with T1D. Perceived stress was directly associated with blood glucose levels.

Mental Health and Health-Related Quality of Life in Austrian Adolescents with Chronic Physical Health Conditions: Results from the MHAT Study

Gudrun Wagner, Andreas Karwautz, Julia Philipp, Stefanie Truttmann, Wolfgang Duer, Karin Waldherr, Gabriele Berger, Michael Zeiler

Summary: In a representative sample study in Austria, it was found that 9.4% of girls and 7.1% of boys aged 10-18 years suffered from chronic pediatric illnesses. Compared to adolescents without chronic illnesses, these patients had higher rates of internalizing and externalizing mental health problems, with anxiety, depression, and social problems being more prevalent. Medication intake due to chronic pediatric illnesses and traumatic life events were related to mental health problems. Targeted prevention programs for adolescents with chronic pediatric illnesses are urgently needed to prevent long-term mental health problems.

Summary: Research on adoptive parents of anonymously born children is lacking. This study compared mental health, attachment styles, dyadic coping, and biographical knowledge between adoptive mothers and fathers, and identified predictors of dyadic coping. Findings revealed low biographical knowledge in adoptive parents, with mothers reporting more anxiety and higher ability to communicate stress and cope dyadically. Knowledge of more biographical data, older age of parents, younger age of child, and higher psychopathology scores predicted better dyadic coping in adoptive parents.
