Purpose To perform a systematic literature review on the clinical impact of augmented reality (AR) for urological interventions. Methods As of June 21, 2018, systematic literature review was performed via Medline, Embase and Cochrane databases in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines and registered at PROSPERO (CRD42018102194). Only full text articles in English were included, without time restrictions. Articles were considered if they reported on the use of AR during urological intervention and the impact on the surgical outcomes. The risk of bias and the quality of each study included were independently assessed using the standard Cochrane Collaboration risk of bias tool and the Risk Of Bias In Non-randomised Studies-of Interventions Tool (ROBINS-I). Results 131 articles were identified. 102 remained after duplicate removal and were critically reviewed for evidence synthesis. 20 studies reporting on the outcomes of the use of AR during urological interventions in a clinical setting were considered. Given the mostly non-comparative design of the studies identified, the evidence synthesis was performed in a descriptive and narrative manner. Only one comparative study was found, with the remaining 19 items being single-arm observational studies. Based on the existing evidence, we are unable to state that AR improves the outcomes of urological interventions. The major limitation of AR-assisted surgery is inaccuracy in registration, translating into a poor navigation precision. Conclusions To date, there is limited evidence showing superior therapeutic benefits of AR-guided surgery when compared with the conventional surgical approach to the respective disease.

Summary: Pericardial disease secondary to sarcoidosis is a rare condition with limited research. This study reviewed previous case reports to understand the diagnosis and management of sarcoidosis-induced pericarditis. The majority of patients presented with dyspnea and lung involvement was commonly observed. Pericardial effusion was the most frequently encountered manifestation, and corticosteroids were the main treatment option. Overall, most patients showed clinical improvement after treatment.

Summary: The use of digital health technologies (DHT) in chronic disease management is increasing. This study evaluated the impact of DHT on clinical outcomes in patients with heart failure (HF) and diabetes mellitus (DM). The findings suggest limited data on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating DHT in patients with both HF and DM. Further research is needed to define standardized clinical endpoints and platforms for managing patients with multiple comorbidities.

Summary: Robot-assisted partial nephrectomy is a viable option for treating tumors larger than 7 cm, but the risk of postoperative renal function deterioration should be considered. Off-clamp robotic partial nephrectomy has shorter operation times and may improve perioperative outcomes.

Aged mesenchymal stem cells and inflammation: from pathology to potential therapeutic strategies

Summary: Natural ageing of organisms and age-related diseases are mainly caused by stem cell ageing and inflammaging. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have high immune-regulating capacity and are potential candidates for immune-related disease treatment. However, MSC application is not satisfactory for some patients, especially the elderly, possibly due to changes in MSCs with ageing, including reduced cell population and differentiation ability, decreased migratory and homing capacity, and defective immunosuppression. It is important to explore the relationship between inflammaging and aged MSCs in order to prevent age-related diseases and improve the therapeutic effects of MSCs. This review discusses the changes in naturally ageing MSCs mainly from an inflammation perspective and proposes ideas for rejuvenating aged MSCs in future treatments.

AI-powered approaches demonstrate effective identification and classification abilities, enabling accurate diagnosis, grading, and prognosis prediction. Challenges include standardization, generalizability, performance benchmarking, and data integration into clinical workflows. Accurate interpretation of AI decisions by pathologists and robust validation workflows are crucial for enhancing patient care.
