Pollution greatly impacts ecosystems health and associated ecological functions. Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are among the most studied contaminants due to their persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity potential. Biomagnification is often described using the estimation of a Trophic Magnification Factor (TMF). This estimate is based on the relationship between contamination levels of the species and their trophic level. However, while the estimation can be significantly biased in relation to multiple sources of uncertainty (e.g. species physiology, measurement errors, food web complexity), usual TMF estimation methods typically do not allow accounting for these potential biases. More accurate and reliable assessment tool of TMFs and their associated uncertainty are therefore needed in order to appropriately guide chemical pollution management. The present work proposes a relevant and innovative TMF estimation method accounting for its many variability sources. The ESCROC model (EStimating Contaminants tRansfers Over Complex food webs), which is implemented in a Bayesian framework, allows for a more reliable and rigorous assessment of contaminants trophic magnification, in addition to accurate estimations of isotopes trophic enrichment factors and their associated uncertainties in food webs. Similar to classical mixing models used in food web investigations, ECSROC computes diet composition matrices using isotopic composition data while accounting for contamination data, leading to more robust food web descriptions. As a demonstration of the practical application of the model, ESCROC was implemented to revisit the trophic biomagnification of 5 polyfluoroalkyl substances (PEAS) in a complex estuarine food web (the Gironde, SW France). In addition to the IMF estimate and 95% confidence intervals, the model provided biomagnification probabilities associated to the investigated contaminants-for instance, 92% in the case of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS)-that can be interpreted in terms of risk assessment in a precautionary approach, which should prove useful to environmental managers. High levels of fluoroalkyl substances and potential disruption of thyroid hormones in three gull species from South Western France

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely present in aquatic environments. The occurrence and fate of emerging PFAS require new data. A field study in the Seine River basin revealed that factors such as age, sex, and trophic ecology influence the bioaccumulation of PFAS in fish. The study also found that fish caught upstream had lower PFAS contamination compared to those caught downstream, with urban and industrial inputs being major contributors. Furthermore, the variability of PFAS levels in fish was influenced by both diet and trophic level.

Passive Sampling as a Tool to Assess Atmospheric Pesticide Contamination Related to Vineyard Land Use

Summary: The extensive use of pesticides in agriculture has caused contamination of the environment, particularly the atmosphere. This study monitored 36 pesticides commonly used in viticulture in the ambient air using polyurethane foams as passive air samplers. The results showed clear seasonal trends in pesticide concentrations, with the highest levels recorded during their application period. These findings provide preliminary information on the seasonality of pesticide concentrations in vineyard areas.

An optimized extraction method was developed to examine the distribution of targeted PFAS in French surface sediments, and the results showed that unattributed PFAS were more abundant in industrial and urban areas, with strong correlations to targeted compounds.

An advanced global soil erodibility (K) assessment including the effects of saturated hydraulic conductivity

Summary: The objective of this study is to incorporate soil hydraulic properties into the erodibility factor (K) of USLE-type models. By modifying and improving the existing equations for soil texture and permeability, the study successfully included information on saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) into the calculation of K factor. Using the Random Forest machine learning algorithm, two independent K factor maps with different spatial resolutions were generated. The results show that the decrease in K factor values has a positive impact on the modeling of soil erosion rates.

Combustion sources were the primary contributors to DTT activity during the heating season, while secondary formation dominated during the nonheating season. The study also revealed that biomass burning had the highest inherent oxidation potential among all sources investigated.

The predictive machine learning model of a hydrated inverse vulcanized copolymer for effective mercury sequestration from wastewater

Summary: In this study, inverse vulcanized polysulfides (IVP) were synthesized by reacting molten sulfur with 4-vinyl benzyl chloride, and then functionalized using N-methyl D-glucamine (NMDG). The functionalized IVP showed a high mercury adsorption capacity and a machine learning model was developed to predict the amount of mercury removed. Furthermore, the functionalized IVP can be regenerated and reused, providing a sustainable and cost-effective adsorbent.

Aluminium bioaccumulation in colon cancer, impinging on epithelial-mesenchymal-transition and cell death

Summary: This study investigated the presence of aluminum in human colon cancer samples and its potential association with biological processes involved in cancer progression. Aluminum was found in tumor areas of 24% of patients and was associated with epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cell death. Additional analyses revealed higher tumor mutational burden and mutations in genes related to EMT and apoptosis in aluminum-positive colon cancers. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of aluminum toxicity may improve strategies for the management of colon cancer patients.
